Book Tale of a Pioneer Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Tale of a Pioneer Church Classic Reprint written by Peter Vogel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tale of a Pioneer Church All history is alie, said Sir Robert Walpole; and Landor insists that no history is ever true. But so far as, under the circumstances, lay in my power I have sought, in the following pages, to give the lie to both of these lies. I prefer to believe with Kossuth that history is the revelation of Providence; and with Shenstone, A history will live, though written ever so indifferently. And why should not this be true of the following pages, since every character in them is either a hero or heroine P If for no other reason, then at least on Massillon's principle: Every Christian is born great because he is born for heaven. It has been said that history is philosophy teach ing by example. If so, there is nothing local in the following pages, but rather a universal lesson for the benefit of all. Book The Pioneer Church

Download or read book The Pioneer Church written by Montgomery Schuyler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pioneer Church: Or the Story of a New Parish in the West Many of the incidents recorded are founded upon facts within his own knowledge, and he has written with the aid Of some twenty years' experience in western life. It is his thorough conviction, that the great want Of the Church is not so much more missionaries, but more working laymen, who, like Mr. Yates, will not forget Christ and His Church in the eager strife after money and lands; but, seeking first the kingdom Of God and His righteousness, will begin their work for Him when they are planning for themselves. The story Of Grace Church, Arlington, might be repeated in hundreds of villages throughout the Valley Of the Mississippi, would the pioneer Churchmen, appreciating their responsibilities, seize each favorable Opportunity and act with promptness and vigor, instead Of casting blame for the neglect, upon the want Of a missionary at the right time. Grace Church, Kirkwood, the most flourishing country parish in the Diocese Of Missouri, was be gun within the last ten years by lay services in a pri vate parlor; and a tasteful stone church was built, and a class Of fifteen prepared for Confirmation, be fore a Rector had been called. Book Pioneer Missionaries of the Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pioneer Missionaries of the Church Classic Reprint written by Charles C. Creegan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Missionaries of the Church The cordial reception which has been given in England, as well as America, to "Great Missionaries," which was issued several years ago, has led to the preparation of this volume. Since the noble men whose life story is briefly told in these twenty-six sketches were nearly all of them founders of missions, if not makers of empires, the title "Pioneer Missionaries" seems the only one which clearly defines the scope of the book. If the writer had been so inclined, the limits of space would have prevented any embellishment It has not been an easy task to compress the main features of the biography of a great man "of whom the world is not worthy" into a single chapter, when one longs for two or three hundred pages to tell the thrilling story of toil and sacrifice and triumph. Brief as are these sketches, it is hoped they may be found to give the leading facts in the career of each of these missionary heroes, and that not a few of those who read the book, especially among the students in our colleges, may be inspired "to follow in their train." She was the daughter of a Scotch couple who had come to England and settled in Alnwick, in Northumberland County. Her father, James Stott, was the driver of the royal-mail stage between Alnwick and N ew castle, and his accidental death while he was still a young man left my grandmother and her eight children almost destitute. She was immediately given a position in the castle of the Duke of Nor thumberland, and her sons were educated in the duke's school, while her daughters were entered in the school of the duchess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Guide to the Old Colony Church and Catalogue of the Collection of Pioneer Relics of Bishop Hill Construction started in 1848, completed in 1849. It is two stories high and has a full basement. The first floor and base ment contain ten apartments each. The exterior walls and the interior partitions are plastered over sun dried brick laid between the solid oak and walnut studs. The brick for the foundations was made in the Colony kiln. The floors are of wood, except in the basement, where tamped clay was used. The walnut and oak siding is authentic. It was made in Peru and hauled to the Colony. Some lumber was purchased in Chicago. Nails, glass, paint, sheet metal came from Rock Island and Peru. The apartments had fireplaces but the church was unheated. The building was lighted with candles and lamps. For its time, it was a great undertaking and for a number of years it was the major building in the village and county. In the century following, only minor changes have been made and today it is essentially the same as constructed by these hardy pioneers. The basement at present, is not ac cessible to the public because of the temporary shoring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The comfortable chimney-comer, the genial story-teller, the attentive group gathered round the roaring fire, and those wonderful, long winter evenings, which have grown so brief and unromantic since, - these images of the past are still golden in my memory; and amid the weightier occupations of life, it is even now refreshing to travel back in thought and reproduce those stories of long ago. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thornton Kelly Tyson, Pioneer Home Missionary Many years ago when Rev. Thornton Kelly Tyson, our Missionary, was one day visiting in our little frontier home, I suggested to him that his life-story should be written, as it would be a great blessing to the world. With a merry glint of the eye he said that his biography would read like an Indian song he once heard at an association. "The Indian sang," he continued, "in weird monotonous tones, and when the words of the song were interpreted they were like this: 'Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go, Go-go-go-go-go.' "Now there were seven stanzas, and they were all exactly like this, so it will hardly be necessary for me to repeat them! That is the way with my life. In response to the Great Commission, I just 'Go-go-go-go-go.' There are several stanzas of it, but as they are all like the first it will not be interesting or profitable to repeat them."
