Book Taken For A Ride

Download or read book Taken For A Ride written by Matteo Rizzo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does public transport work in an African city under neoliberalism? Who owns what in it? Who has the power to influence its shape and changes in it over time? What does it mean to be a precarious and informal worker in the private minibuses that provide public transport in Dar es Salaam? These are the main questions that inform this in-depth case study of Dar es Salaam's public transport system over more than forty years. The growth of cities and informal economies are two central manifestations of globalization in the developing world. Taken for a Ride addresses both, drawing on long-term fieldwork in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and charting its public transport system's journey from public to private provision. This new addition to the Critical Frontiers of Theory, Research and Practice in International Development Studies series investigates this shift alongside the increasing deregulation of the sector and the resulting chaotic modality of public transport. It reviews state attempts to regain control over public transport and documents how informal wage relations prevailed in the sector. The changing political attitude of workers towards employers and the state is investigated: from an initial incapacity to respond to exploitation, to the political organisation and unionisation which won workers concessions on labour rights. A longitudinal study of workers throws light on patterns of occupational mobility in the sector. The book ends with an analysis of the political and economic interests that shaped the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit in Dar es Salaam, and local resistance to it. Taken for a Ride is an interdisciplinary political economy of public transport, exposing the limitations of market fundamentalist and postcolonial appraoches to the study of economic informality, the urban experience in developing countries, and their failure to locate the agency of the urban poor within their economic and political structures. It is both a contribution to and a call for the contextualised study of neoliberalism.

Book excerpt: It seems incredible that a call-in TV show featuring pictures of missing children could change her life so drastically, but when a 16-year-old recognizes her father in the photo on the screen, she discovers that the family who's been searching for their daughter is looking for "her." But who is she? Brooke or Amy? She's been living with her father and now learns he's taken her illegally. Who do you love when everyone says they love you? How can anyone know which parent loves you most? Susan Beth Pfeffer delivers yet another hard-hitting novel that delves into the issues that confront real teens today. "Lively narration, peppered with wry, insightful wit, and the story's balanced resolution make it enjoyable reading...."-- "School Library Journal" "Pfeffer perfectly conveys Brooke's hurt and resentment.... Readers will share Brooke's anxiety as she tries to adapt to a new family while remaining loyal to her father, and they'll understand her anger when she finally realizes the cost of her father's actions."-- "Booklist" "The emotions are raw...but the story combines the draw of sensational headlines with an understanding of teenage struggles."-- "The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books" "The author maintains so brisk a pace and so appealingly plumbs her heroine's emotional life that the reader will want to believe in the story."-- "Publishers Weekly," Starred Review

Book Social Europe the Road not Taken

Download or read book Social Europe the Road not Taken written by Aurélie Dianara Andry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the European Left's attempt to think and give shape to an alternative type of European integration-a 'social Europe'-during the long 1970s. Based on fresh archival material, it shows that the western European Left-in particular social democratic parties, trade unions, and to a lesser extent 'Eurocommunist' parties-formulated a project to turn 'capitalist Europe' into a 'workers' Europe'. This project favoured coordinated measures for wealth redistribution, market regulation, a democratisation of the economy and of European institutions, upward harmonisation of social and fiscal systems, more inclusive welfare regimes, guaranteed employment, economic and social planning with greater consideration for the environment, increased public spending to meet collective needs, greater control of capital flows and multinational corporations, a reduction in working time, and a fairer international economic order favouring the global south. During the pivotal years following 1968, deeply marked by labour militancy, new social movements, economic crisis, and the unmaking of the 'postwar compromise', a window of opportunity opened in which European integration could have taken different roads. The defeat of 'social Europe' was a result of a decade-long social conflict which ended with the affirmation of a neoliberal Europe. Investigating this forgotten struggle and the reasons of its defeat can be useful not just to scholars and students eager to understand the historical evolution of European integration, the European Left, and European capitalism, but also to anyone interested in building alternative European and global futures.
