Book Imposter Syndrome and Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim

Download or read book Imposter Syndrome and Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim written by Patricia Park and published by Ember. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multicultural teen struggles to fit into her elite prep school, her diverse Queens neighborhood, and even her own home. A hilarious, poignant, and powerful YA novel from the award-winning author of Re Jane. “Simply brilliant!” —David Yoon, New York Times best-selling author of FRANKLY IN LOVE “Scathingly funny.” —Gayle Forman, New York Times best-selling author of IF I STAY Alejandra Kim feels like she doesn’t belong anywhere. Not at home, where Ale faces tense silence from Ma since Papi’s passing. Not in Jackson Heights, where she isn’t considered Latinx enough and is seen as too PC for her own good. Certainly not at her Manhattan prep school, where her predominantly white classmates pride themselves on being “woke”. She only has to survive her senior year before she can escape to the prestigious Whyder College, if she can get in. Maybe there, Ale will finally find a place to call her own. The only problem with laying low— a microaggression thrusts Ale into the spotlight and into the middle of a discussion she didn’t ask for. But her usual keeping her head down tactic isn’t going to make this go away. With her signature wit and snark, Ale faces what she’s been hiding from. In the process, she might discover what it truly means to carve out a space for yourself to belong. Imposter Syndrome and Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim is an incisive, laugh-out-loud, provocative read about feeling like a misfit caught between very different worlds, what it means to be belong, and what it takes to build a future for yourself.

Book AMERICAN ROBOT

Download or read book AMERICAN ROBOT written by Aaron Anthony Vessup and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caught between family demands, social groups, and ostracized as a member of the religious “Holy Rollers,” the author of AMERICAN ROBOT: A Cultural Chameleon Rising Above Race & Religious Traumas balances on precarious razor edges of sacred edicts, genetic mental illnesses, and toxic social stress. Parental physical abuse and rigid mental programming add to repeated cult behavior–modification strategies. Author Aaron Anthony Vessup boldly confronts opposing social and spiritual quandaries. The writer narrowly escapes police bullets, suicide, and institutionalization. Interracial fraternizing has proven dangerous. This extraordinary memoir highlights a boy clinging to a dream of promoting United Nation idealism, while on the fringes of seething social protests and violence. Moving from South Central Los Angeles to Nebraska, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, his mounting rage morphs into decisions threatening to erase hard-earned achievements. With unabashed frankness, the author takes readers on a transforming journey beyond America, between social class intersections, cultures, and lifestyles. Torn between guilt of social inactivity and passions for justice, doing the right thing becomes increasingly problematical as mental haunts seem to prevail. AMERICAN ROBOT: A Cultural Chameleon Rising Above Race & Religious Traumas traces nontraditional paths taken to shake free from psychological controls that are used to shackle fierce desires for independence. Memoir word count approximates sixty-nine thousand, dissecting conditioning processes affecting various levels of social and mental instability.

Book excerpt: In April 2020, at the height of the pandemic in New York City, Andrew, the assistant director of a funeral home one mile from Elmhurst Hospital, the “epicenter of the epicenter,” meets a legendary Coney Island witch doctor (Lelya Dorche), who makes him an offer that could better his chances of keeping his COVID-positive elderly parents and his severely asthmatic 13-year-old son, Miro, off the ever-expanding list of virus mortalities. To keep up his end of the bargain, Andrew will have to find his way to Bulgaria (no small task considering that there’s a ban on passenger flights to Europe) to secure 10 liters of a rare Macedonian pine sap, a key ingredient of Lelya Dorche’s proven remedy.

Book 791 Coney Island Avenue Brooklyn

Download or read book 791 Coney Island Avenue Brooklyn written by George DiGuido and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2002-03-18 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kid of Italian immigrants grows up in South Brooklyn and Flatbush during the 20s, 30s, and 40s, playing Johnny-on-the-Pony, Ringalevio and Spin-the-Bottle. Life was simpler then, before the breakup of Ma Bell, the corporate takeovers, and junk mail. His generation was deeply affected by the Great depression; the Big Band music of Goodman, Dorsey, Ellington; movies of Cowboy and Indians, Fred and Ginger; Mickey and Judy; the New York Worlds Fair; and Pearl Harbor, which forced them to leave home and go to war in places they could hardly find on a map. REVIEW What great fun! Ive never been to Brooklyn, and I feel I know the old place - and love it. Although those simple, innocent, carefree, halcyon pre-war days of 50, 60, 70 years ago are long gone, they surely come alive in this charming, laugh-out-loud poignant memoir of Brooklyn. DGuido writes as if hes talking to his reader over a beer, making the story both appealing and very accessible - a la Neil Simon, in tone and the story itself. Thanks to the author for recapturing a kinder, sweeter, gentler time with such wonderful recall. Id love to send this book to several former Brooklyn-ite friends. I cant imagine anyyone from that era or place whod not enjoy this breezy, good read.

Download or read book Stills written by Lazaro Agustin Alvarez and published by Author House. This book was released on 2009-02-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stills are moments in time or memory recollections of the author. The moments described span a period from the pre-teen years to the age of sixty. * From a child growing up in an inter-racial family in the island of Cuba during the decade of the fifties, to the sudden arrival and oppression of Communism. Followed by a migration to the United States in 1962 as an unaccompanied minor, a historical chapter that later would be known as the Pedro Pan Children. Soon after the father bid farewell to the son, the regime of Fidel Castro sentenced him to a 20-year prison term to serve at the Isla de Pinos concentration camp. In 1980, the Mariel boatlift, a controversial event that brought Cubans to American shores, provided the venue for the long awaited reunion in the free world. This achievement provided the turning point for the author to focus on his person and finally confront his inner most secret - "homosexuality". However, many hurdles lied ahead of this decision. Then the journey continued * This book is intended for an adult audience. For privacy protection, names have been changed where required.
