Book Carry Me Home

Download or read book Carry Me Home written by Ben Cohen and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ben Cohen’s dad didn’t know anything about the sport his young son had taken up, but he was happy to drive him to practice, and was soon helping out at the club. When his business went bankrupt money was tight, but Ben’s hard working parents inspired their son to put his all into rugby. Then, when Ben was 20, his father intervened in a fight in the nightclub where he worked. He was viciously beaten and one month later he died in hospital. Ben was doing an England press conference at the time, and it was down to coach Clive Woodward to deliver the devastating news. But the ordeal was far from over. The inquest lasted five months before the funeral could be held, and it was a year before the family were in court, facing Peter’s assailants. Ben put all of the anger and pain from his father’s death into his rugby. Fast and powerful on the wing, he was soon the best in the world in his position and a cornerstone of the England team, culminating in the legendary World Cup win in Sydney in 2003. And yet he always felt like an outsider. Most people didn’t know that Ben is clinically deaf. His sixth sense for the game got him through on the pitch, but off it his poor hearing was often taken for arrogance. This is an inspirational story of passion and pain; of the highs of achieving your goals, and the grief of losing something you can never get back.

After thirty-eight years away ¬- twenty of those in Europe - she decided to return to the country of her birth; however rather than hop on a plane, Dot chose to drive there: all by herself at the age of sixty, in a twenty-year-old 2WD Ford Transit van that she converted into her home. Dot spent eight and a half months covering 20,000km of some of the toughest overlanding routes in the world, through West and Central Africa. This is her story.Follow Dot's extraordinary 20,000km adventure in her first book, Going Home to Africa, where she describes the ups and downs she faced over the course of her grand expedition: the countries, the people, insane traffic, corrupt borders, marriage proposals, perilous potholes and good old Africa Roadside Assistance. Her fascinating journal also highlights the varied landscapes and cultural history of Africa that she discovered along the way, the strange, funny and sometimes terrifying situations that she encountered, and the numerous challenges that she and BlueBelle endured - all the while navigating her own personal internal journey. At the time of writing Dot still lives in and travels with BlueBelle whenever possible and can be seen out and about meeting people and making things happen in her beloved Zimbabwe. Since her return to Bulawayo, Dot has been tirelessly seeking ways to improve the future for rural communities in Zimbabwe. Her twenty years of business coaching experience is helping to enhance their traditional lifestyle with 21st Century technology in order to actively encourage sustainable development. Works by poets have always entertained their readers and will continue to do so. The Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, A Tale of Two Cities, Harry Potter, and James Bond have been among the best-selling books of all time for many generations. While some literary and poetic works carry life lessons, many others make us think. Some works are known for the sheer entertainment they provide, while others intrigue. Many works of literature establish a strong connection with their audience through the stories they tell or the message they convey. Readers tend to associate themselves with the emotions described in these works and participate emotionally. Literature therefore has a profound impact on the minds of readers and, in turn, on their lives! A Melody Called Africa reminds the human society that strong and integrated works of literature and art can improve our lives and answer the big weary questions of the mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giza Our host family’s apartment was in Giza, a suburb of Cairo. On the day of our arrival, our host Walid had been hospitalized, but his brother-in-law, his charming wife and his three teenage sons were at the residence to greet us. One section of the apartment consisting of a double room and an adjoining bathroom was screened off for our use. Walid’s family members made us feel so completely at home that my travel partner, who was nervous at the thought of staying with an Egyptian family, changed her mind about going to a hotel. Giza is also the home of the Pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This was also the first stop on our tour the following morning. Our travel guide and lecturer for the duration of our visit was Walid’s brother-in-law. He was a dentist by profession, but he acted as a tour guide when there were visiting tourists. The Pyramids were even more awe-inspiring than I had imagined. According to our guide, there could be as many as 180 pyramids in Egypt, but the site of the largest Pyramids was in Giza. Tourists flock to see the Pyramids of Giza and ask the same questions people have been asking for centuries, which no one seems to be able to answer. How was the Pyramids built and how was it possible to transport all those huge blocks of granite without the aid of modern technology? I climbed on the bottom layer of the Pyramids, so I had a good feel for the size of each boulder. I found it amazing that the Egyptians could go about their daily lives in the midst of all this history. Close by the Pyramids was the Sphinx, which - like many of the archeological sites - seemed to appear out of the desert sand quite unexpectedly. The Sphinx was another source of fascination for me. It was an enormous monument that had been carved out of a single piece of stone. I wanted to know why part of its nose was missing and where the missing part was. I was told that the missing part was housed in the British Museum in London. This seemed to be a recurring answer when we visited other sites. I determined that on my next visit to London, I would have to visit the British Museum in order to complete my visit to Egypt! Walid kept his word about making arrangements for me to ride on a camel. Immediately after we visited the Pyramids and the Sphinx, our guide took us to a man who gave camel rides within view of the Pyramids. My camel was called Michael Jackson. When I was hoisted up on the camel, I immediately had a panic attack and had to be taken off the camel. The camels legs were so long, I had visions of the animal speeding off in the desert. In spite of the owner’s pleadings to give it a try, that was the full extent of my camel “riding” experience. I promised myself that next time, I would do better. After all that excitement, we went to a nearby restaurant to sample our first Egyptian meal. On the lower level of the restaurant, a lady was baking Egyptian bread in a special stone oven. She invited us to try our hand at baking. The baked bread was served in the restaurant and was quite delicious. I also found Egyptian food to be quite palatable. Typically, Egyptian food is served in several courses. I found the vegetable dishes to be so appetizing that I forgot what I was told by the Travel Well Clinic and ate a raw cucumber salad. I suffered the consequences for about half a day. I was really thankful that I had my tummy bug medication with me. Our trip to Aswan involved an overnight train ride. Although we traveled in a first class compartment, a sleeping car had not been reserved. Consequently, we spent the night trying to sleep in an upright position, not to mention being woken up by other passengers getting on and off the train. Rough! One advantage of traveling by train was the opportunity to see the landscape at dusk. The most memorable sight for me was seeing a large number of camels lying down and nestled underneath the trees at bedtime. Of c

Book A Life for Freedom

  • Author : Denis Goldberg
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2016-03-18
  • ISBN : 0813166853
  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book A Life for Freedom written by Denis Goldberg and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From June 1963 to October 1964, ten antiapartheid activists were tried at South Africa's Pretoria Supreme Court. Standing among the accused with Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, and Walter Sisulu was Denis Goldberg. Charged under the Sabotage and Suppression of Communism Acts for "campaigning to overthrow the government by violent revolution," Goldberg was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. The only white man convicted during the infamous Rivonia trial, he played a historic role in the struggle for justice in South Africa. In this remarkable autobiography, Goldberg discusses growing up acutely aware of the injustice permeating his homeland. He joined the South African Communist Party and helped found the Congress of Democrats. It was his role as an officer in the armed underground wing of the African National Congress (ANC), however, that led to his life sentence -- the outcome of which was a staggering twenty-two years behind bars. While he was incarcerated, the racist dogma of apartheid imposed complete separation from his black comrades and colleagues, a segregation that denied him both the companionship and the counsel of his fellow accused. Recounted with humor and humility, Goldberg's story not only provides a sweeping overview of life in South Africa both during and after apartheid, but also illuminates the experiences of the activists and oppressors whose fates were bound together.
