Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of short stories set in rural Oklahoma in the 1940s. It depicts the early life of three brothers, who lost their mother and went to live with their grandparents. They had no electric lights, no refrigeration, no air conditioning, no running water, and no indoor toilet. They did not know of television, computers, video games, or the internet. And yet they were happy. This book has no plot, per se, but the stories give an insight into the brothers lifestyle in a small Oklahoma farming community. The book has significant historical value and a touch of nostalgia for a bygone era. It is a light-hearted and fun read.

Book excerpt: Six months ago, Colonel Barton Stauffer retired from activity duty to spend more time with his family. Now he has been reactivated and assigned to lead a team of time travelers in a top-secret research facility buried deep beneath Carlisle Barracks to survey the ancient prehistoric past stretching into antediluvian times, a period for which there are no written records. Our understanding of this time period is based entirely on conjecture, flavored by legend, mythology, oral history, and misunderstood archaeological activityand Stauffers team is out to find hard facts. The history of humanity is inextricably intertwined with our religious experience and tradition. What lies hidden or lost in the prehistoric past shrouds the truth about mans ancient origins, but extensive cities built of intricately carved monolithic stones prove the existence of early and extraordinarily advanced technologies. As Stauffer leads his team in search of proof of the great flood and of the legendary Hall of Records, hostile forces attempt to obliterate all evidence of humankinds ancient past, and only Stauffer and his team can stop them. The Ancients is the third book in the Barton Stauffer time travel trilogy, which began with Gettysburg Revisited and History Quest. In this third volume, Stauffer leads an elite team of time travelers and antiquarians who are tasked with protecting humanitys ancient historical record and keeping the repository of antediluvian artifacts of humanitys mysterious past safe from those who wish to destroy them, bringing to a dramatic conclusion the saga of mankinds exploration of the past using temporal technology.

Book Hitler s RAF Collaborators

Download or read book Hitler s RAF Collaborators written by M.S. Morgan and published by Air World. This book was released on 2024-06-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into the controversial actions of British prisoners of war during World War II, exploring cases of alleged betrayal, collaboration, and espionage. During the Second World War over 200,000 British prisoners of war were detained by the Third Reich. A large proportion of these PoWs were members of the Royal Air Force, or airmen who served in it. A number of them have been immortalised in the many books and movies that have portrayed their valiant exploits and escapes, none more so than the events surrounding the Great Escape in 1944. The names of camps such as Stalag Luft III, at Sagan, and Colditz Castle are well known to the general public, the prisoners incarcerated there often being held in high regard. But there were a few PoWs whose loyalty to the cause and their fellow prisoners might not have been as strong. The names of Pilot Officer Railton Freeman, Sergeant Jack Alcock and Sergeant Raymond Hughes are among those found in that inglorious group of alleged traitors, for all three men betrayed their colleagues and the nation. The trio assisted the Nazi regime in making radio broadcasts, or even joining the British Frei Korps, a unit of the dreaded SS. One gave information about the Monica radar system to the Luftwaffe, and others got fellow prisoners to divulge information on fake Red Cross forms. Other prisoners such as Flight Lieutenant Julius Zuromski and Squadron Leader Robert George Carpenter also came under suspicion when reports began to arrive at MI9 in London. Enquiries were subsequently undertaken by the RAF Special Investigation Branch and MI5 – investigations that would ultimately lead to the imprisonment of some and the release of others. What these men did and why some were prosecuted, and others were released without charge, is examined by the author. Why one man in particular, an ardent Nazi and traitor, was not sentenced to death, having liaised with the likes of the infamous William Joyce, also known as ‘Lord Haw Haw’, and even Josef Goebbels, is a mystery to this day. Sadly, not all our aviators were heroes. But there has long been debate that some of them might have actually been working for the Security Services. So, were these men traitors who collaborated with Hitler’s Third Reich, or agents working for the British State?

For Madison "Mazy" Bacon, a young wife living in southern Wisconsin, the future appears every bit as promising as it is reassuringly predictable. A loving marriage, a well-organized home, the pleasure of planting an early spring garden--these are the carefully-tended dreams that sustain her heart and nourish her soul. But when her husband of two years sells the homestead and informs her that they are heading west, Mazy's life is ripped down the middle like a poorly mended sheet forgotten in a midwestern storm. Her love is tried, her boundaries stretched, and the fabric of her faith tested. At the same time, she and eleven extraordinary women are pulled toward an uncertain destiny--one that binds them together through reluctance and longing and into acceptance and renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, James Beard Foundation Book Award, 2016 Art of Eating Prize, 2015 BCALA Outstanding Contribution to Publishing Citation, Black Caucus of the American Library Association, 2016 Women of African descent have contributed to America’s food culture for centuries, but their rich and varied involvement is still overshadowed by the demeaning stereotype of an illiterate “Aunt Jemima” who cooked mostly by natural instinct. To discover the true role of black women in the creation of American, and especially southern, cuisine, Toni Tipton-Martin has spent years amassing one of the world’s largest private collections of cookbooks published by African American authors, looking for evidence of their impact on American food, families, and communities and for ways we might use that knowledge to inspire community wellness of every kind. The Jemima Code presents more than 150 black cookbooks that range from a rare 1827 house servant’s manual, the first book published by an African American in the trade, to modern classics by authors such as Edna Lewis and Vertamae Grosvenor. The books are arranged chronologically and illustrated with photos of their covers; many also display selected interior pages, including recipes. Tipton-Martin provides notes on the authors and their contributions and the significance of each book, while her chapter introductions summarize the cultural history reflected in the books that follow. These cookbooks offer firsthand evidence that African Americans cooked creative masterpieces from meager provisions, educated young chefs, operated food businesses, and nourished the African American community through the long struggle for human rights. The Jemima Code transforms America’s most maligned kitchen servant into an inspirational and powerful model of culinary wisdom and cultural authority.
