Book excerpt: Taiwan functions like a sovereign state but it is denied and devoid of proper international recognition. While it has attempted to be included in multilateral and international organizations, it has failed on most counts. Its quest for greater international participation has become a common phenomenon, and a current topical and hotly debated topic. It has faced countless challenges. The research sought to examine Taiwan's quest for participation in international and multilateral organizations. It identified and described the challenges and opportunities of Taiwan's quest for international participation as an anomalous state. The United Nations was used as a case study to assess the challenges confronting Taiwan in its quest for international participation, while the WTO was used as a case study to assess the opportunities of Taiwan's international participation. Qualitative methods were used to probe the available literature and draw inferences from the different arguments on the determined topic. In an attempt to answer the overarching question, the study posed four sub questions. i.e.: 1. What are the underlying factors hindering Taiwan from joining the UN? 2. What factors enabled Taiwan's membership in the WTO? 3. How can the challenges confronting Taiwan be overcome? 4. Does Taiwan's future survival as a self- governing state depend on its inclusion in international and multilateral organizations? The findings of this study revealed that Taiwan's current anomalous status poses considerable challenges to its quest for international participation, and as such must take pragmatic steps to maximize it self-governing posture. This study purports complete independence and a change Taiwan's constitution as ways to correct Taiwan's ill-fated status within the international community. Having analyzed Taiwan's political and international dilemma, it was found that the Taiwanese people through the principle of self-determination has the power to transform Taiwan into an undisputed sovereign state.

While Taiwan clearly is under growing military threat, it also is facing a simultaneous and intensifying Chinese political campaign to wear down the will of the Taiwan people. This latter line of effort receives less attention, but left unaddressed, has the potential to do far more damage to American interests. This book rightsizes the risks confronting Taiwan by taking a holistic view of China’s national ambitions and Taiwan’s role in them, China’s strategies for pursuing unification with Taiwan, and America’s most effective responses. Contrary to many other books on the market, the authors make the case for why conflict in the Taiwan Strait is not preordained, and in fact, it would be strategic folly for the United States to conclude that conflict is inescapable. Book excerpt: This book project studies the variation of sovereignty in international order by analysing how the general model of sovereignty is localised in the political practice of two major non-Western rising powers, namely China and India. It aims to investigate how the sovereignty of these states is constituted, which includes the question of how sovereignty works and becomes constituted in specific contexts and cases that fall outside the discourses and positions of the so-called Westphalian (conservative, absolutist) sovereignty that is dominantly advocated by these two states on a global level. The core of this project explores specific contested cases and situates them vis-à-vis the broader approaches of China and India to sovereignty. I specifically analyse four particular cases: China’s approach to sovereignty in relation to Hong Kong and Taiwan and India’s approach to sovereignty in relation to Bhutan and Kashmir. In doing so, I will illustrate that sovereignty is a flexible and plastic phenomenon which can be intertwined with principles, models or practices that are usually seen as divergent from or contradicting sovereignty; for example, those that derive from China’s and India’s imperial and colonial history.
