Book Economic Interests Vs Political Interventions The Case Of Economic Relations Between Mainland China And Taiwan

Download or read book Economic Interests Vs Political Interventions The Case Of Economic Relations Between Mainland China And Taiwan written by Qi Luo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-08-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the impact of political interventions made by Beijing and Taipei in recent years on the development of cross-Straits economic relations. The study finds little evidence that either the missile firings carried out by Beijing in 1995 and 1996 or the mainland policy review conducted by Taipei since 1996 has slowed down the growth of trade and investment activities between mainland China and Taiwan. In fact, the trade dependence ratios for the two economies have continued to increase since 1995. Although the level of Taiwans committed investment in the mainland has dropped considerably in recent years, it has moved largely in line with the general trend of total FDI in China. The synchronism between Taiwan investment and other foreign investment suggests that the Taiwan investors, like other foreign investors, responded mainly to macroeconomic conditions and policies in the mainland, rather than to the directives from the Taiwan authorities, when they made their investment decisions. This is due to the fact that the economic logic of pursuing cross-Straits economic activities is so powerful that Taipei's restrictive policy toward investment in the mainland has often been ignored or diluted by the Taiwanese private business community.

Book Economic Integration Across the Taiwan Strait

Download or read book Economic Integration Across the Taiwan Strait written by Peter C. Y. Chow and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their controversial political relationship, Taiwan and China remain very much entwined economically. This timely volume explores the complicated state of economic and trade relations between the two countries, meticulously unraveling the issue's various threads and presenting an authoritative breakdown of a complex and fascinating economic linkage. Armed with up-to-date original research, contributors offer expert analyses on a variety of issues relating to economic integration between Taiwan and China. These include trade agreements, foreign direct investment, outsourcing of manufacturing and migration of industry, integration of banking and financial markets, and the recent shift toward a more integrated economy with Greater China. The considerable political tension between the two countries is also discussed, as are the economic relationships with neighboring East Asian countries such as Japan and others. In the final chapter, editor Peter C.Y. Chow discusses Taiwan's policy options for the future and offers his expert recommendations for speeding Taiwan's achievement of globalization and widening its ultimate political choices. Professors and students of global economics and East Asian studies will no doubt find this a fresh and invaluable contribution to the literature.

Book China Taiwan Rapprochement

Download or read book China Taiwan Rapprochement written by Min-Hua Chiang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how since about 2008 the economy of Taiwan has become ever more deeply integrated into the economy of China. It goes beyond a consideration of trade and investment flows, and discusses also the large population flows, the growing integration of the two financial systems and the nature of the deep economic integration at the industry and firm level. It considers the impact of growing economic integration on society and politics, assesses how China-Taiwan economic integration is affecting the East Asian region more widely, and explores the implications for international relations, including the United States dominance in the region. Overall, the book presents a comprehensive analysis of all the issues.

Book Economic Reform And Cross strait Relations Taiwan And China In The Wto

Download or read book Economic Reform And Cross strait Relations Taiwan And China In The Wto written by Julian Chang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a discussion of the general impact of WTO membership on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and addresses the political and economic impact on cross-Strait relations of common membership. The book begins with an introduction which analyzes the state of cross-Strait economic and political relations on the eve of dual accession to the WTO and briefly introduces the chapters which follow. The first chapter discusses the concessions made by both sides in their accession agreements and is followed by two chapters which describe the manner in which the Taiwan economy was reformed to achieve compliance as well as the specific, restrictive trade regime that was put into place to manage mainland trade. The next two chapters deal with the implications of that restrictive trade regime for the Taiwan economy in Asia and with the nature of the interactions between the two sides within the WTO. The final four chapters of the volume examine the impact of membership on four sectors of the economy: finance; agriculture; electronics and automobiles. There is a post-script which briefly covers developments since the chapters were completed.

Book The Implications of China Taiwan Economic Liberalization

Download or read book The Implications of China Taiwan Economic Liberalization written by Daniel H Rosen and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China and Taiwan have built one of the most intertwined and important economic relationships in the world, and yet that relationship is not mutually open, compliant with World Trade Organization norms, or even fully institutionalized. What's more, despite massive trade and investment flows, the boundary between the two is a serious flashpoint for potential conflict. But leaders in Beijing and Taipei have committed to normalize and deepen their economic intercourse and open a new post-Cold War era in their relationship. While the political significance of this gambit has captured attention worldwide, the scope of opening intended and the bilateral, regional, and global effects likely to ensue are as yet poorly understood. This volume attempts to remedy that uncertainty with careful modeling combined with a qualitative assessment of the implications of the cross-strait economic opening now agreed in an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA). The study explores the implications for Taiwan and China, for their neighbors, and for the United States if this undertaking is fully implemented by 2020.

Book Wealth and Freedom

Download or read book Wealth and Freedom written by Gerald A. McBeath and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Chinese Nationalists retreated from the mainland to Taiwan in 1949-50, they governed a people barely recovered from the Japanese occupation and Pacific War. Wartime damage to factories, plants and buildings had not been repaired and food was barely sufficient to feed an increasing population. However, by 1997 Taiwan had entered the select list of wealthy nations. It is the world's 14th largest trading nation, has the third largest foreign reserves and is the sixth largest outbound investor. The International Monetary Fund reviewed Taiwan's economic indicators in 1997 and placed it for the first time among the world's developed nations. This transition from poverty to affluence in less than 50 years constitutes an economic miracle, claims the author, and its explanation is one of the themes of this book.
