Book Taiwan s Imagined Geography

Download or read book Taiwan s Imagined Geography written by Emma Jinhua Teng and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Until 300 years ago, the Chinese considered Taiwan a “land beyond the seas,” a “ball of mud” inhabited by “naked and tattooed savages.” The incorporation of this island into the Qing empire in the seventeenth century and its evolution into a province by the late nineteenth century involved not only a reconsideration of imperial geography but also a reconceptualization of the Chinese domain. The annexation of Taiwan was only one incident in the much larger phenomenon of Qing expansionism into frontier areas that resulted in a doubling of the area controlled from Beijing and the creation of a multi-ethnic polity. The author argues that travelers’ accounts and pictures of frontiers such as Taiwan led to a change in the imagined geography of the empire. In representing distant lands and ethnically diverse peoples of the frontiers to audiences in China proper, these works transformed places once considered non-Chinese into familiar parts of the empire and thereby helped to naturalize Qing expansionism. By viewing Taiwan–China relations as a product of the history of Qing expansionism, the author contributes to our understanding of current political events in the region."

Book excerpt: Canadian John Groot's walk around the entire coastline of Taiwan takes us through bustling cities, fishing ports, rural villages, military sites, and magnificent coastal scenery for a unique, intimate look at the country. Groot first came to Taiwan in 2001, fell in love with the island and its friendly people, and decided to stay. Years later, looking for a big adventure and a way to forge deeper bonds to his adopted home, he set off on foot from Tamsui, traveling clockwise around the island on weekends and holidays, in what would turn out to be an eight-year trek. Taiwanese Feet recounts this remarkable journey with honesty, warmth, and a zest for life. And great humor too. This is much needed as Groot braves sinister tunnels, crumbling cliffside trails, packs of stray dogs, long dull slogs under sweltering skies, and massive plates of sashimi. The book is unpretentious, casual yet informed. The island's geological history is explained as Groot walks through diverse landforms. The travelogue also shows us Taiwan off the beaten path and introduces us to an unexpected and heart-warming cross-section of Taiwanese society. What's more, it reveals in terms of history, culture, commerce, and temperament, how much Taiwan is a maritime nation. Taiwan's strategic location on China's doorstep has seen numerous foreign powers competing through the centuries for control over the island, and Groot unearths the fascinating stories of these struggles. Taiwanese Feet is sure to become a travel classic and inspire readers to hit the road and explore Taiwan.

Book excerpt: A collection of essays and stories documenting the lived theology and spirituality we need to hear in order to lean into a more freeing, loving, and liberating faith—from the hosts of the beloved Truth’s Table podcast “The liberating work of Truth’s Table creates breathing room to finally have those conversations we’ve been needing to have.”—Morgan Harper Nichols, artist and poet Once upon a time, an activist, a theologian, and a psychologist walked into a group chat. Everything was laid out on the table: Dating. Politics. The Black church. Pop culture. Soon, other Black women began pulling up chairs to gather round. And so, the Truth’s Table podcast was born. In their literary debut, co-hosts Christina Edmondson, Michelle Higgins, and Ekemini Uwan offer stories by Black women and for Black women examining theology, politics, race, culture, and gender matters through a Christian lens. For anyone seeking to explore the spiritual dimensions of hot-button issues within the church, or anyone thirsty to deepen their faith, Truth’s Table provides exactly the survival guide we need, including: • Michelle Higgins’s unforgettable treatise revealing the way “racial reconciliation” is a spiritually bankrupt, empty promise that can often drain us of the ability to do real justice work • Ekemini Uwan’s exploration of Blackness as the image of God in the past, present, and future • Christina Edmondson’s reimagination of what a more just and liberating form of church discipline might look like—one that acknowledges and speaks to the trauma in the room These essays deliver a compelling theological re-education and pair the spiritual formation and political education necessary for Black women of faith.

Book Cats of Taiwan A Photographic Journey of Taiwan s Cat Village

Download or read book Cats of Taiwan A Photographic Journey of Taiwan s Cat Village written by Scott Keatley and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-03-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the authors who brought you Dogs Of Delhi, their newest photographic journey, Cats of Taiwan is an exploration of the soul of Taiwanese cats. Houtong, which translates roughly into Monkey Cave, is a small cat paradise tucked away in the hills of northern Taiwan. A former coal mining town along the Keelung River, cats have been living among the permanent population since the late 1800s. Originally, the cats were brought in to take care of the mouse problem that was causing health issues among the populace. However, in the 1990s the mine fell into disuse and the population declined quickly. With disappearance of the people and industry there was a decrease in the mouse population, but the cats remained. A dedicated group of volunteers, who go by the name "Monkey Cat Friends Club" (translated), make frequent visits to the cats bringing everything from medical care to food. Over 200 cats are thriving in this tiny town, each with their own personality and habits.

Book Motion Pictures and the Image of the City

Download or read book Motion Pictures and the Image of the City written by Xiaofei Hao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you’ve ever had a special attachment to a film, and also an attachment to the city it was shot in, Xiaofei Haos book will give you a fresh eye on how the city is expressed in the film by the filmmaker. From the perspective of social science, each face of the city in a film comes from a choice – shown only on the basis of the filmmakers’ selection criteria. In this process, the film becomes the cognitive map of that city. The interweaving of the city space and film language will be elaborated first from the perspective of urban studies. Then some viewpoints of tourism studies will be provided to explore the relation between the image of the city in the film and in reality. Two films about the city Taipei are looked at as case studies: A One and a Two (Yi Yi, Director Edward Yang, 2000) and Au Revoir Taipei (Director Arvin Chen, 2010).

  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Pictures from Home written by Larry Sultan and published by Mack. This book was released on 2017 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992 to wide critical acclaim, Pictures From Home is Larry Sultan's pendant to his parents. Sultan returned home to Southern California periodically in the 1980s and the decade-long sequence moves between registers, combining contemporary photographs with film stills from home movies, fragments of conversation, Sultan's own writings and other memorabilia. The result is a narrative collage in which the boundary between the documentary and the staged becomes increasingly ambiguous. Simultaneously the distance usually maintained between the photographer and his subjects also slips in an exchange of dialogue and emotion that is unique to this work. Significantly increasing the page count of the original book, this MACK design of Pictures From Home clarifies the multiplicity of voices - both textual and pictorial - in order to afford a fresh perspective of this seminal body of work -- Provided by the publisher.
