Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential read for the legions of Sherlockians about the globe. Sherlock Holmes is the world’s greatest-ever consulting detective. The huge popularity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional creation, and his sixty stories, made Sherlock one of the most famous characters of Victorian London. All evidence suggests Sherlock’s fan adoration has lasted almost one and a half centuries through many adaptations. There is Sherlock fan fiction in China, Sherlock manga in Japan, and tribute pop songs in Korea. Guinness World Records awarded Sherlock Holmes the title of most portrayed literary human character in film and television thanks to the popular Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr., series like Elementary starring Lucy Liu, Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and so many more. Sherlock’s enduring appeal shows that his detective talents are as compelling today as they were in the days of Conan Doyle. The Science of Sherlock gives you an in-depth look at the science behind the cases Sherlock cracked in those Ripper streets of old.

Book The Quest for Excellence

Download or read book The Quest for Excellence written by Dustin Gish and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberal education aspires to excellence through the cultivation of free human beings who excel in thought, word, and deed. But what exactly is excellence, and why do we admire it? How do we conceive of what is excellent? What constitutes excellence—either for human beings, or in the realms of philosophy, literature, science, and politics? Why is excellence an aim of liberal education? What kinds of texts, courses, and inquiries contribute to achieving this end? Such questions animate the studies herein. The essays in this volume reflect on the idea of excellence embedded within core texts, as well as how such texts influence and ennoble higher education. In its chapters, we consider rival forms of excellence from ancient Greece and Rome, through modern Europe and America, and beyond. The world of antiquity and its accounts of excellence, as represented in the works of Euripides, Aristotle, Plato, Archimedes, and Cicero, are here brought into dialogue with diverse modern perspectives on excellence, as articulated by Shakespeare, Descartes, Newton, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Austen, Darwin, Lincoln, Tennyson, and Nietzsche, as well as (more recently) by John Dewey, Martin Luther King Jr., Cardinal Newman, and Eboo Patel. Our desire to seek and understand excellence transcends borders, and the purpose of this volume is to help perpetuate in contemporary higher education the study of core texts essential to the cultivation of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.

Bueler examines in broad literary historical terms what she calls the Tested Woman Plot, a "story-machine" that originated in the ancient Mediterranean world (as in the stories of Eve and Lucretia), flourished in English Renaissance drama (as in Much Ado about Nothing and The Changeling), and continued into the novels of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (as in Clarissa, Adam Bede, and The Scarlet Letter)." "Encyclopedic in scope, The Tested Woman Plot is a provocative look at a key narrative tradition that spans many genres and should appeal to all serious students of literature."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Nelson s Lost Jewel

  • ISBN : 0750986115
  • Pages : 357 pages

Download or read book Nelson s Lost Jewel written by Martyn Downer and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Admiral Lord Nelson's diamond Chelengk is one of the most famous and iconic jewels in British history. Presented to Nelson by the Sultan Selim III of Turkey after the Battle of the Nile in 1798, the jewel had thirteen diamond rays to represent the French ships captured or destroyed at the action. A central diamond star on the jewel was powered by clockwork to rotate in wear. Nelson wore the Chelengk on his hat like a turban jewel, sparking a fashion craze for similar jewels in England. The jewel became his trademark to be endlessly copied in portraits and busts to this day. After Trafalgar, the Chelengk was inherited by Nelson's family and worn at the Court of Queen Victoria. Sold at auction in 1895 it eventually found its way to the newly opened National Maritime Museum in Greenwich where it was a star exhibit. In 1951 the jewel was stolen in a daring raid by an infamous cat-burglar and lost forever. For the first time, Martyn Downer tells the extraordinary true story of the Chelengk: from its gift to Nelson by the Sultan of Turkey to its tragic post-war theft, charting the jewel's journey through history and forging sparkling new and intimate portraits of Nelson, of his friends and rivals, and of the woman he loved.

It's nothing for which he will ever be officially recognized and it will never earn him a large paycheck. But there is a high likelihood that Luther's proficiency at his job will get him killed. Luther Green is a government assassin. For more than a decade, he has traveled the world, surgically eliminating America's enemies, never questioning his orders while performing as reliably as death itself. But his new assignment threatens to change all that. Luther's superiors have designated his new target as Alex Deavers -- the agent who taught Luther everything he knows and a man now considered to be a rogue agent on the edge of insanity. For Luther, a man normally more concerned with determining the how of an assignment than the why, his new duty forces him to confront questions he's never before had to consider. Why is he being sent to kill someone on American soil when all of his previous assignments were done abroad? Why doesn't his agency notify the FBI? Perhaps most important, why does he get the feeling that his own agency is spying on him? As Luther seeks to uncover the clues that will lead him to his prey, he slowly realizes that Alex is on a mission of his own, playing a cat-and-mouse game with his former apprentice while setting in motion a plan that could kill millions. Luther begins to suspect that the only person who can give him the answers he needs is the psychotic madman he has been ordered to execute. Luther follows a perilous trail that takes him into the most dangerous territory he has ever encountered. He is just a pawn in a twisted chess match, but a pawn may transform itself into the game's most dominant weapon. Now he has just days to learn the rules and employ all of his skill and training to find the truth. But to defeat the deadly forces against him, Luther Green must win the most dangerous game of all.
