Book excerpt: A delightfully warm, encouraging story of a young girl and the special library dog who helps her develop patience, acceptance, and confidence as she learns to read, from award-winning author-illustrator Lisa Papp. Madeline Finn does NOT like to read. But she DOES want a gold star from her teacher. Except stars are for good readers, for understanding words, and for saying them out loud—things that Madeline Finn doesn't believe she can do. Fortunately, Madeline Finn finds a little help when she meets Bonnie, a library dog. Reading out loud to Bonnie isn't so bad, and when Madeline Finn gets stuck, Bonnie doesn't mind. As it turns out, it's fun to read when you're not afraid of making mistakes. Bonnie teaches Madeline Finn that it's okay to go slow—and, most importantly, to keep trying. Lisa Papp offers an inspiring and comforting story, perfect for new readers who just need a little confidence to overcome their fears.

Book excerpt: The sun always comes out tomorrow for the shelter animals Bill Berloni rescues—sometimes from death’s door—and then trains to meet the demands of the stage. Berloni was a nineteen-year-old theater apprentice more then three decades ago when he was offered his first big break: find and train a dog to appear in the original production of the Broadway hit Annie. Defying the odds, he rescued a down-on-his-luck dog from a local shelter and, together, they redefined what animal performers could do. Since then Berloni and his trainers have provided animals for hundreds of films, commercials, and television shows as well as live theater, including productions of The Wizard of Oz and Winn-Dixie, all over North America. In this heartwarming book, he tells the true stories of “throw-away” animals who came back to work with some of entertainment’s biggest names, names like Bernadette Peters, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mike Nichols, the New York City Ballet, and many more. This updated edition includes an account of Berloni’s search for the newest Sandy to star with everyone’s favorite red-headed orphan.

Book excerpt: With the increased popularity of adoption, more animal lovers than ever are turning to shelters to find that special cat or dog. But for some pets, the journey to a "forever home" is much more challenging than others-with physical or behavioral needs that require extra love and care. Take Goose, for example: an elder pup with a distinctive "honk" and a severe heart condition, who still grasped at life with joy and gusto. Or Tiny, who stayed at the shelter for months while the staff and veterinarians tried to figure out his condition, and was finally adopted by a couple who loved him to the moon and back. These are just a couple of the pets featured in Tails of Joy, an upbeat and heartwarming celebration of pets with special needs and their relationships with the humans who eventually become their lifelong companions. The dogs and cats featured may come from very different circumstances, but one theme remains the same throughout: the love, joy, and happiness owners experience after adopting these incredible animals show the healing power of the bond that develops between humans and their pets.

Book excerpt: Pets hold a special place in our hearts. They are our companions, our best friends, our children, even our therapists at times. This collection of stories is a tribute to the animals that have blessed us with their love. About Hearts Alive Village: Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas (HAVLV) is a 501[c]3 organization whose mission is to secure loving and stable homes for dogs and cats at risk of being lost in the shelter system. The organization began because of a journal entry from Christy Stevens' 10 year old daughter about her "One Wish." Kendall Stevens wanted to start an animal rescue called Hearts Alive Village, where she would save everything from dogs and cats, to pigs and goats. Two years later, they are short a few pigs, but the rescue has saved more than 110 animals, and fed and cared for 100s more through a variety of owner support programs. Hearts Alive aims to keep pets in their original homes whenever possible. Programs like Kendall's Kupboard (a pet food pantry), which feeds more than 200 dogs and cats in low income families each month, and Solutions over Surrenders gives pet owners access to resources like training, financial assistance, and more, allow families to stay together, even during the difficult times. This 100% volunteer rescue also provides Humane Education to youth groups throughout the valley, works with Veterans to place amazing pets with loving individuals, and provides transitional housing for a domestic abuse survivor. They live by the slogan "It takes a village," and work to bring the community together to improve the lives for all animals. In June of 2015, they opened their first Adoption Center and Pet Supply Store, giving animals a place to meet potential adopters, and creating a system to become self sustaining. Cat adoptions have tripled since the adoption center opened, and all of the animals are enjoying love and cuddles from volunteers, and strutting their stuff for potential adopters. The adoption center serves as a community hub to celebrate our animals, educate the public, and inspire children to make a difference, just like Kendall has. If you would like to learn more about Hearts Alive Village, please visit their website at www.havlv.com.
