Book Tahiti

Download or read book Tahiti written by Nicholas Senn and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's signed and corrected ms., dated 1906 in Chicago, of a three-volume account of his journey to Tahiti in the winter of 1904. Dr. Senn begins with a description of his voyage across the Pacific from San Francisco aboard the steamer "Mariposa." As they approach Tahiti and Moorea after a voyage of 12 or 13 days, the author observes the string of atoll islands, with their coral formations and central lagoons fringed by cocoa palms. Because of the dangerous reefs, a native pilot is used to guide the ship safely into the harbor of Papeete. The author includes notes on the racial background, nature, and customs of the natives, as well as the sights of Papeete, such as the communal laundry washbasin, the plaza marketplace, king's palace, government school, and cathedral. There is also a lengthy section on the climate, terrain, and natural beauties of the island. Dr. Senn discusses the history of Tahiti and its rulers, and the experiences of early white visitors to the island, such as Capt. Cook of the "Endeavor" in 1769, Capt Bligh of the "Bounty" in 1788, and English missionaries in 1797. Other topics covered include education, religion, funeral ceremonies, and business in Tahiti; diseases of the natives such as tuberculosis, measles, leprosy, and elephantiasis; practices of the "kahuna" or native doctor; and important staples of the Tahitian diet such as breadfruit, manioc, cassava, arrowroot, taro, and cocoanuts. The third volume contains extensive description of cocoa palms, the abundant fruits of the island, the native species of trees, and the rural districts of Tahiti

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tahiti, the Island Paradise The far-away little island of Tahiti is the gem of the South Pacific Ocean. If any place in this world deserves to be called a paradise, Tahiti can make this claim. This charming spot in the wide expanse of the peaceful ocean has attractions which we look for in vain anywhere else. From a distance, the grandeur of its frowning cliffs rivets the eye, and, in coming nearer, its tropic beauty charms the visitor and imprints upon his memory pictures single and panoramic that neither distance nor time can efface. The scenic beauty of this island is unsurpassed. The calming air, redolent with the perfume of fragrant flowers of exquisite beauty, on the seashore, in the valleys and on the precipitous mountain sides; the luxuriant vegetation; the forest fruit-gardens and the sweet music of the surf remind one of the original habitation of man. The natives, a childlike people, friendly, courteous and hospitable, are the happiest people on earth, free from care and worries which in other less favored parts of the world make life a drudgery. Tahiti is the only place in the world where the people are not obliged to work. The forests furnish bread and fruit and the sea teems with fish. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tahiti George calderon was killed in Gallipoli on 4th June 1915. He had visited Tahiti in 1906. Its people and their life had sunk very deeply into his heart but when he returned home he deliberately put his diaries aside, postponing for several years the book he intended to write, in order that he might recall the memory in due perspective. Meanwhile he made laborious and exhaustive research into the history of the European in uences to which the island had been exposed, for comparison with his own impressions. He began to write his book in the winter Of 1913-1914 and was at work on it for some months before the war. He left it incomplete, but there is a synopsis which Shows how he meant to construct it. Some parts Of the book were practic ally finished others existed in many forms, among his notes and sketches, and with the help Of these the book has been brought to the shape in which it is now published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tahiti: The Garden of the Pacific We sailed from San Francisco on board a small clipper brigantine of 160 tons, called the Emily, which might have passed for a yacht had it not been for the absence Of a flush deck and the cargo she carried. A half-deck house occupied most of the space aft, leaving merely a vacant corner near the wheel, where I had my sea-chair placed, and there I sat in close proximity to the silent helmsman. A few steps led down to the main cabin, which was divided into a small saloon with dinner-table. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Tahiti; A History of Fiji; Papua, Where the Stone-Age Lingers; The Men of the Mid-Pacific; The Islands of the Mid-Pacific; Java, the Exploited Island The seductive charm of Tahiti is all its own for everywhere the beautiful is wedded to the grand. The stern crags are but nestling places for the mosses of the forest, and fascinated by the s-ylvan setting of the waterfall where rainbows float on mists among the tree ferns; the roar of the cataract is unperceived; and the coral reefs and shaded shores of fair Tahiti, who can forget them - the glorious sparkle of sun beams playing over flickering ripples in a riot of turquoise, emerald, and blue is the setting of every picture - the background of every memory. Indeed, it is not where the peaks are highest that Tahiti is loveliest for nowhere in the Pacific do the mountains meet the sea in fairer grace of form and color than at Tautira on the eastern coast of Tahiti-iti. The charmed memory of Tahiti lives only to die with the beholder. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tahiti: Without the Gospel It is not often that a Preface is read, and consequently the character of the book to which it is attached is apt to be misunderstood. - In relation to the book now presented to the public, it is made up principally of the interesting details of Mr. Ellis' "Polynesian Researches." The chapters as they are here presented were read to a family, the members of which are nearly described, except by name, in the close of the first chapter; and the conversations occurred, generally, as they are put down. It will be noticed that from their age, the members of the family, with the exception of the youngest, were all sufficiently advanced to comprehend and be instructed by the details; and as a Sunday-school library book, the volume is prepared with an especial reference to those pupils who are sufficiently advanced to be in the highest Bible classes attached to Sunday-schools.
