Every country around the globe exhibits some ethnic, religious or cultural diversity. Instead of an asset to be celebrated, however, governments too often treat this as a threat. Book excerpt: Austin Peterson first became “island happy” during WW2 when, as a Major in the Armed Forces Radio Section, he toured AFRS stations in the Pacific (Honolulu, Kwajelein, Eniwetok, Ulithi, Guam. Saipan, Palau, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, Manila, Biak, New Guinea, the Admiralties, Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, Canton and Futi Futi). In 1960 he wrote “Tahiti Report” which was sponsored by Pan Am. He also wrote travel reports on Fiji, New Caledonia, American Samoa, Manu’a Islands and Western Samoa for the airline. “Tahiti Report” was used by H. Allen Smith (author of Two Thirds of a Coconut Tree), by the MGM film crew on location for Mutiny on the Bounty, and Jack Paar read from it on his South Seas TV special. Peterson retired in 1999 after 67 years in radio and television as a writer and producer.

Book excerpt: The 101 Mecyclothorax carabid beetle species of Tahiti, French Polynesia comprise a very diverse adaptive radiation. Given Tahiti?s surface area of only 1,045 km2, the island?s Mecyclothorax fauna represents the densest, most diverse radiation of species on Earth. Speciation of Tahitian Mecyclothorax has also occurred very rapidly, with closely-related species allopatrically distributed across geographic ranges defined by Tahiti?s incredibly complex geological topography. Such high levels of endemism are useful for conservation management, as continuing presence of these beetles in small areas of Tahitian forest can signify good health of the native biota in those areas. This taxonomic revision includes dichotomous keys and diagnostic photographs supporting identification of all 101 species, over one-quarter newly described in this publication. Each species treatment includes ecological and geographical information. This monograph illuminates an important component of Tahitian biodiversity in support of ongoing efforts to conserve Tahiti?s biological resources.
