Book Tactical Publishing

Download or read book Tactical Publishing written by Alessandro Ludovico and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to level up to the next transformative phase of publishing—with a critical methodology that transcends the dichotomy of paper and digital media production. Publishing is experiencing one of the most transformative phases in its history. In Tactical Publishing, a sequel to Post-Digital Print, Alessandro Ludovico explores the forces driving this historical phase, highlighting the tremendous opportunities it presents. Our task, he believes, is to develop an alternative publishing system that transcends the dichotomy between paper and digital media. He focuses first on the two activities on which publishing is premised—reading and writing (with an emphasis on writing machines and post-truth in the latter)—and then deconstructs the concept, proposing alternative strategies inspired by recent practices and unconventional uses of technology. Ludovico shows how the radical and strategic use of print in the past can serve as the basis for our transition to the next phase of publishing. He argues that the new ecology of publishing should be based on three main elements: the stimulation of our senses, the role of software in forming the publishing infrastructure, and the importance of archives. During this transition from the current post-digital phase to the next phase, independent publishers and artists, as well as readers and machines, will enable new structures and actions that realize the potential of publishing and the preservation of content, thereby enriching social practices. The author also considers the crucial social role played by new forms of libraries, as artists and publishers shape the coming publishing world in its various manifestations. Combining analytical accounts of tactical strategies with examples from artworks and experimental practices, the book concludes with a manifesto for publishing in the twenty-first century and an appendix with a selection of one hundred publications representing the “periodic table” of future publishing.

Book excerpt: How do artistic experiments with artificial intelligence problematize human-centered notions of creative agency, authorship, and ownership? Offering a wide-ranging discussion of contemporary digital art practices, philosophical and technical considerations of AI, posthumanist thought, and emerging issues of intellectual property and the commons, this book is firmly positioned against the anthropomorphic spectacle of "creative AI." It proposes instead the concept of the posthumanist agential assemblage, and invites readers to consider what new types of creative practice, what reconfigurations of the author function, and what critical interventions become possible when AI art provokes tactical entanglements between aesthetics, law, and capital.

Book Your Jungle Guide to Chess Tactics Sharpen Your Tactical Skills

Download or read book Your Jungle Guide to Chess Tactics Sharpen Your Tactical Skills written by Peter Prohaszka and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are countless puzzle books available. However, it is very surprising that there is virtually almost none that gives a comprehensive overview with all of the frequent tactical motifs and themes that occur in practice. The ones that I am aware of are either largely incomplete, not systematic, without text, or old, and therefore the analysis contains lots of mistakes. The ambitious goal of this book is to fill this critical gap by addressing all of these issues. Each of the 25 Chapters contains a thorough introduction with the games best showcasing the motif at hand. Next, the puzzle sections specifically aim to reinforce the reader's pattern recognition. There are 365 training puzzles in total, and all of them have a 1-5 star value to show the level of difficulty. The solutions are given at the end of every chapter. This book is dedicated to ambitious players who want to improve their game, as well as for coaches to help their students get to the next level." - Peter Prohaszka

Book excerpt: It also shows how work with a connection to Vienna by international stars like David Bowie, Wes Anderson, and Christoph Schlingensief has absorbed the same principles. While the overwhelming scale of technological development and the ensuing problems and crises may not have been deliberately designed to induce resignation, passivity, and despair, those who benefit from the related hyperobjects of financialization and climate change must find it convenient that they do, as demoralization reduces resistance to their profit-making machinations. It is in this context that Red Vienna's proud tradition of social engagement and long tradition of resistance and radicality deserves to be better known. Susan Ingram is Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University, Toronto, where she coordinates the Graduate Diploma for Comparative Literature and is affiliated with the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies and the Research Group on Language and Culture Contact. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry and Philosophy as Handlung offers a series of verbal â oedoing itsâ in which there is significant complicity between sentences, but plenty of dissonance to slip in the spices that define the peculiar aroma of the era at hand. For that reason, a tactical sequence accords literary space for time and place to herald themselves, for the temporal feel to remain prominent. For a tactical sequence to take place, all that is required is the transcurrence of a textâ (TM)s language, for the text to be open and not to prejudice even its own immediate future.

Book Post Digital Print

Download or read book Post Digital Print written by Alessandro Ludovico and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital technology is now a normal part of everyday life. The mutation of music and film into bits and bytes, downloads and streams is now taken for granted. For the world of book and magazine publishing however, this transformation has only just begun. Still, the vision of this transformation is far from new. For more than a century now, avant-garde artists, activists and technologists have been anticipating the development of networked and electronic publishing. Although in hindsight the reports of the death of paper were greatly exaggerated, electronic publishing has now certainly become a reality. How will the analog and the digital coexist in the post-digital age of publishing? How will they transition, mix and cross over? In this book, Alessandro Ludovico rereads the history of the avant-garde arts as a prehistory of cutting through the so-called dichotomy between paper and electronics. Ludovico is the editor and publisher of Neural, a magazine for critical digital culture and media arts. For more than 20 years now, he has been working at the cutting edge (and the outer fringes) of both print publishing and politically engaged digital art.

Book excerpt: Over the last 30 years, the 'technical' or armed pick-up truck has become arguably the most ubiquitous military land vehicle of modern warfare. Harking back to the armed Jeeps and Chevrolet trucks of the SAS and Long Range Desert Group in North Africa in World War II, the world's first insurgent technicals were those of the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army in Algeria in the late 1970s, followed by the Chadian use of technical in the so-called Toyota War against Libya. Since then, technicals have seen use in Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, as well as being used by Western and Russian Special Forces. Fully illustrated with commissioned artwork and providing rigorous analysis, this is the first history of how this deceptively simple fighting vehicle has been used and developed in conflicts worldwide.

Book The Many Faces of Strategic Voting

Download or read book The Many Faces of Strategic Voting written by John H Aldrich and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voters do not always choose their preferred candidate on election day. Often they cast their ballots to prevent a particular outcome, as when their own preferred candidate has no hope of winning and they want to prevent another, undesirable candidate’s victory; or, they vote to promote a single-party majority in parliamentary systems, when their own candidate is from a party that has no hope of winning. In their thought-provoking book The Many Faces of Strategic Voting, Laura B. Stephenson, John H. Aldrich, and André Blais first provide a conceptual framework for understanding why people vote strategically, and what the differences are between sincere and strategic voting behaviors. Expert contributors then explore the many facets of strategic voting through case studies in Great Britain, Spain, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and the European Union.

You're sure to fall in love with Thor and learn from both Kim and him as the story progresses. This book will make you cry, laugh, and motivate you to live life to its fullest. DeFiori for Lessons from Thor. In her first book, DeFiori offers important lessons her service dog, Thor, has taught her that readers from all walks of life can apply to their lives. DeFiori, currently pursuing her MBA through Cornell University's executive MBA program, thoughtfully recounts her traumatic journey while serving in the U.S. Army, challenging readers to view life differently for greater happiness and fulfillment. Thor, DeFiori's often silly yet very focused Labrador Retriever, inspired her to write this unforgettable story and helpful guide for readers. In Lessons from Thor, retired Army Captain DeFiori cleverly weaves Thor's take on life throughout her story. Some of the topics she focuses on include: taking care of yourself; trying new things; resting and recharging; finding and enjoying every moment; leaning on others when struggling; appreciating our past; and, being a good listener to people who are hurting. As an example, she shares that "When Thor goes to the beach, he doesn't watch the waves, he crashes into them. Life is about trying things, not just watching from the sidelines." DeFiori began her military career after graduating from West Point in 2008 as a military police officer. She deployed shortly after to Afghanistan for a year, serving with military police and infantry companies. She was one of the first women to work alongside Afghan police day and night conducting raids with special operations units. She went on to serve as an aide-de-camp at the Pentagon. "Kim's debut book is so heartfelt and encouraging," said Chris Schafer, CEO at Tactical 16. "She talks about her difficult journey and close relationship with Thor, her precocious furry friend, in a fun and meaningful way. You're sure to fall in love with Thor and learn from both Kim and him as the story progresses. This book is so well done and motivational!" DeFiori calls Maryland home and recently started Badges United Foundation, a non-profit, to help first responders who have PTSD. #Book #Dog #Story #Beach
