In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.

Considerations for employment were identified from an analysis of doctrine, contemporary military thought, and three historical examples of the employment of light infantry. The historical examples used were the German invasion of Crete, the Falklands War, and the battle at Bastogne. Thoughts by MG Franz Uhle-Wettler, LTG John Galvin, Steve Canby, Edward Luttwak, and Michael Duffy provide an appraisal of the use of light infantry. This study found that there were many similarities in the employment of light forces despite differences in environment, threat, and time. Key similarities are: operations in rugged terrain, close air support superiority, and significant artillery support. Light units habitually operated in small units and at night. Tactics are characterized by raids, ambush, and infiltration. These tactics enhance the use of light infantry in a contingency role at the tactical level.

General characteristics of light infantry forces are identified, and an analysis of how light forces operate tactically and how they are supported is presented. In the process, the relationship of the light infantry ethic to its organization is evaluated, and the differences between light infantry and conventional infantry is illuminated. For the purpose of this study, the term conventional infantry refers to modern-day motorized and mechanized infantry and to the large dismounted infantry forces typical of the standard infantry divisions of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The study concludes that light infantry is unique and distinct. A light infantry ethic exits and manifests itself in a distinctive tactical style, in a special attitude toward the environment, in a freedom from dependence on fixed lines of communication, and in a strong propensity for self-reliance. The study is based on a historical analysis of 4 light infantry forces employed during and since World War II: The Chindits, in the 1944 Burma campaign against the Japanese; The Chinese communist Forces during the Korean War; British operations in Malaya and Borneo 1948-66; and the First Special Service Force in the mountains of Italy 1942-44. -- Page [2] of cover.

Book excerpt: This study is an analysis of the close support artillery battalion in the Light Infantry Division (LID) and it's relationship with the maneuver brigade. There is currently a debate over whether the maneuver brigade should have an organic artillery battalion or the traditional direct support artillery battalion. Recent studies such as ARMY 21 and MOC 96 (Maneuver Oriented Corps) suggest organic artillery battalions are the best organization for the future battlefield. In addition recent experience at the National Training Center indicate in general that maneuver-fire support team relationships have some serious weaknesses. One solution in correcting these problems and organizing units for the future battlefield is organic artillery battalions in the maneuver brigades to include the brigades of the LID. In order to determine if the maneuver brigades should have organic artillery battalions in the LID this paper examines the LID, its unique missions, capabilities and limitations, and its unique light infantry characteristics. Also considered are historical examples of U.S. and German light divisions in WWII, U.S. infantry divisions in Vietnam and the contemporary British light contingency force. The analysis includes an examination of the employment of close support artillery in these historical examples using the fire support doctrinal tenets of adequacy, flexibility and continuity. Technological improvements in field artillery systems are also considered as they relate to a potential need for a change in the artillery battalion-maneuver brigade relationship. Finally, the organic and direct support options are examined using four principles of war: offense, mass, economy of force and unity of effort.

Book excerpt: Recently, authors in western military journals have indicated that defense of restricted terrain and urban areas are the most suitable missions for Light Infantry Divisions in Central Europe. This monograph argues that those missions are not appropriate. In a high intensity conflict, light infantry units must be employed offensively in accordance with a tactical style more suited to their training and organization. This paper includes a study of the use and misuse of light forces since the beginning of World War II. The primary conclusion is that our Light Infantry Divisions must operate in Europe in the same way that they intend to fight in a low intensity conflict--i.e. they must be offensively oriented and fight in an unconventional style that focuses on disrupting rather than destroying the enemy. Our military doctrine must reflect that light infantry forces operate in this manner. A secondary conclusion concerns our lack of infantry in Europe. Since defensive missions in high intensity warfare require conventional dismounted infantry, the Army should bring more regular infantry divisions back into the force structure.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to determine if the tactical reconnaissance capabilities of the U.S. Army's Light Infantry Division are sufficient to conduct counterinsurgency combat operations. The current light division was created to deal with low-intensity combat contingencies such as counterinsurgency warfare. By design, the division possesses limited intelligence gathering capability. Likewise, the division may be required to operate with austere support from corps and theater army. Within such an environment, forces conducting combat operations against guerrilla or light infantry forces must be employed efficiently to be effective. The key to that efficiency rests with the availability of timely and sufficient tactical intelligence. The study begins by identifying the doctrinal tactical reconnaissance requirements associated with counterinsurgency combat operations. The capabilities of the light division with appropriate corps intelligence plugs are determined and analyzed with regard to mission requirements. U.S. experiences in conflict are then reviewed to verify doctrinal reconnaissance requirements, to determine the effectiveness of U.S. tactical reconnaissance efforts and to assess their affect on combat operations. The capabilities of the light division are then compared to the requirements developed to identify shortcomings in the division's reconnaissance capabilities.
