Download or read book Posthuman Worlds written by Adolfo Cacheiro and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Posthuman Worlds: Roberto Bolaño's Narrative and Virtual Reality presents interpretations of several novels and one short story by Roberto Bolaño. As befits the global setting of most of these narratives, they are analyzed from the perspective of global culture and politics. Particular attention is paid to transnational European politics, as this topic is central to an understanding of the intertwined themes of politics and the law in Bolaño’s work. In Distant Star and “Labyrinth,” these themes exist within the context of a preoccupation with personal identity and ideology. Adolfo Cacheiro utilizes psychoanalytic interpretation and philosophical exegesis to clarify the subjective component of this preoccupation in the aforementioned texts. The law is also a prominent theme of The Savage Detectives, which Cacheiro interprets in relation to mythology. One of the most innovative aspects of this book is the discussion of the role of virtual reality in Amulet and 2666. These novels are read as representations of a posthuman world that manifest an intertextual relationship with science fiction. In 2666 virtual reality unifies the diverse components of a world system in time and space. A phenomenological investigation of this reality supports the conclusion that the principle subject matter of 2666 is a naturalistic theology based on technology.
Download or read book You Can t Be Serious written by Kal Penn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The star of the Harold and Kumar franchise, House, and Designated Survivor recounts why he rejected the advice of his aunties and guidance counselors and, instead of becoming a doctor or “something practical,” embarked on a surprising journey that has included confronting racism in Hollywood, meeting his future husband, and working in the Obama administration, in this “incredibly joyful and insightful” (Kiefer Sutherland) memoir. You Can’t Be Serious is a series of funny, consequential, awkward, and ridiculous stories from Kal Penn’s idiosyncratic life. It’s about being the grandson of Gandhian freedom fighters, and the son of immigrant parents: people who came to this country with very little and went very far—and whose vision of the American dream probably never included their son sliding off an oiled-up naked woman in the raunchy Ryan Reynolds movie Van Wilder…or getting a phone call from Air Force One as Kal flew with the country’s first Black president. “By turns hilarious, poignant, and inspiring” (David Axelrod, New York Times bestselling author), Kal reflects on the most exasperating and rewarding moments from his journey so far. He pulls back the curtain on the nuances of opportunity and racism in the entertainment industry and recounts how he built allies, found encouragement, and dealt with early reminders that he might never fit in. He describes his initially unpromising first date with his now-fiancé Josh, involving an 18-pack of Coors Light and an afternoon of watching NASCAR. And of course, he reveals how, after a decade and a half of fighting for and enjoying successes in Hollywood, he made the terrifying but rewarding decision to take a sabbatical from a fulfilling acting career for an opportunity to serve his country as an Obama White House aide. Above all, You Can’t Be Serious shows that everyone can have more than one life story. The book “is insightful, funny, and instructive for anyone who’s ever grappled with how they fit into the American dream” (Ronan Farrow, New York Times bestselling author), and demonstrates that no matter who you are and where you come from, you have many more choices than those presented to you. And okay, yes, it’s also about how Kal accidentally (and very stupidly) accepted an invitation to take the entire White House Office of Public Engagement to a strip club—because, let’s be honest, that’s the kind of stuff you really want to hear about.

Download or read book Kawabunga Kitten written by Doc Pruyne and published by Svaha Productions. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fast-paced, full throttle comic novel” is how IndieReader describes Kawabunga Kitten! an amusing epic about small town folks fighting to save a rare newt. When the splendid flaming hoohahs mate in the spring they exude a plum smell that drives people crazy for sex and love—but a greedy conglomerate is about to jam a gas pipeline through Splendid Swamp, home of the flaming hoohahs. Europe is desperate for the energy, so the stage is set for an epic battle, what Kirkus Reviews called an ”over-the-top saga of feisty villagers fighting the man.” The fringe folks plan and argue, joke around and fall in love as they struggle to save the splendid flaming hoohah, the soul of Harrumph, Massachusetts. Don’t expect Furtin, the snarky narrator, to take it easy on anyone, especially Garnet, a retired lawyer harking back to her hippy roots. A budding rock star, Edgeward the Tie-Dyed Frankenstein, writes a theme song while Otho the famous painter finds a protégé in the Luckless Kid. Already celebrated for its fun dialogue and outrageous events, Kawabunga Kitten! starts with a ridiculous scene and builds to an explosive climax. A true epic, yet tightly written, Doc’s third novel will keep you amused, guessing and totally entertained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A genre-blending story of modern witchcraft, a police state and WTF characters, for fans of Alice Hoffman and Madeline Miller. -- In the state of Liberty, water is rationed at alarming prices, free speech is hardly without a cost, and Texas has just declared itself its own country. In this society, paranoia is well-suited because eyes and ears are all around, and they are judging. Always judging. This terrifying (and yet somehow vaguely familiar) terrain is explored via Eleanor – a young woman eagerly learning about the gifts of her magic through the support of her coven. But being a white witch is not as easy as they portray it in the books, and she’s already been placed under ‘house arrest’ with a letch named Stan, a co-worker who wronged her in the past and now exists in the form of a cat. A talking cat who loves craft beers, picket lines, and duping and ‘shooting’ people. Eleanor has no time for Stan and his shenanigans, because she finds herself helping another coven locate a missing witch which she thinks is mysteriously linked to the shortage of water in Liberty.
