This book was released on 2009 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this repport the Director-General's discusses his main concerns about the current global crisis and what should be done about it. Millions of men & women have lost their jobs; business bankruptcies continue to grow exponentially; unemployment is expected to continue to rise probably until 2011; meanwhile 45 million people will enter the labour market in 2009 and following years looking for their first job. The IMF forecasts some recovery in global growth but this is conditional on the success of stimulus packages. Evidence of past crises indicates that, even after economic growth returns, employment only recovers to pre-crisis level with a lag of four to five years. And there was already a significant work deficit before the crisis. Knock on effects such as the increase in demand for social protection when jobs are not available can also be seen. Ultimately, on a broader level, prolonged crises carry major risks for social and political stability

  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Future Jobs written by Edward E. Gordon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pervasive disconnect exists between the job/career culture and the present economic reality in America. This book offers powerful strategies for stemming the employment crisis and proposes comprehensive solutions for businesses, government, and job seekers alike. America's low unemployment rate overshadows the fact that more that 20 million Americans are still unemployed. Moreover, more than eight million jobs are vacant because employers cannot find qualified candidates. It is projected that if this imbalance between available positions and skills is not quickly addressed, more than 14 million jobs will be vacant by 2020, and that many more people out of work. In Future Jobs, historical economist Edward E. Gordon explains how increasingly complex technologies, global demographic shifts, and outdated education-to-employment systems are converging and may imminently cause a labor-market crisis. How can we ensure that enough people possess the skills necessary to holding the jobs of today and tomorrow? This book points to a solution gaining traction across the United States: Regional Talent Innovation Networks (RETAINs), alliances of businesses, educators, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations that successfully bridge the talent gap. Additionally, it provides information on the most promising jobs and careers of the next decade for early-career job seekers and for workers who are looking to change career paths.

Book How to Fight Inequality

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequality is the crisis of our time. The growing gap between a few at the top and the rest of society damages us all. No longer able to deny the crisis, every government in the world is now pledged to fix it – and yet it keeps on getting worse. In this book, international anti-inequality campaigner Ben Phillips shows why winning the debate is not enough: we have to win the fight. Drawing on his insider experience, and his personal exchanges with the real-life heroes of successful movements, he shows how the battle against inequality has been won before, and he shares a practical plan for defeating inequality again. He sets a route map for us to overcome deference, build our collective power, and create a new story. Most books on inequality are about what other people ought to do about it – this book is about why winning the fight needs you. Tired of feeling helpless in the face of spiralling inequality? Want to know what you can do about it? This is the book for you.
