Book excerpt: In the knowledge economy era, knowledge production and dissemination are of key interest to individuals, organizations, and economies. Tacit knowledge results from experience, leading to innovation.The learning culture can facilitate the transformation of errors into experiences. This study explores whether mistake acceptance facilitates tacit knowledge awareness and sharing in the information technology, healthcare, and construction industries in Poland and the United States. The findings show the influenceof mistake acceptance on knowledge production and the differences between countries and industries. The US showed a higher level of mistake acceptance, which was similar across the three industries, than did Poland, which showed differences between sectors. In general, the higher the acceptance of mistakes, the greater the effect of tacit knowledge awareness on sharing.This study shows that there is no knowledge production without learning and no learning without mistake acceptance.

Large samples were obtained, allowing quantitative modeling not possible in many tacit knowledge studies focused on more qualitative analysis. Conceptually, the study identifies the potential sources of tacit knowledge (learning-by-doing and/or learning-by-interaction), individual tacit knowledge development leading to a willingness to share, and the consequent correlation to process and/or product/service innovation. The important role of critical thinking as a control variable in tacit knowledge development in individuals is also identified as is the connection of process innovation as a mediator between tacit knowledge sharing and product/service innovation.The model is supported across both samples though with interesting differences across countries, particularly in sources of tacit knowledge (more learn-by-doing in the US), the link between awareness and sharing (stronger in US), and innovation (process as a full mediator in Poland, complementary in the US). The main theoretical contribution is empirical support for tacit knowledge's role in innovation, including the step-by-step details of how everything connectsas well as details on how the model can differ by national context. The managerial implications include the care that must be taken to evaluate national circumstances and their potential impact on a firm's management of tacit knowledge.

Book excerpt: It is known that “Knowledge management” is associated with significant benefits which can empower organizations to get more competitive advantages in their market. Knowledge sharing and knowledge creation are the two vital aspects of knowledge management which play an important role in creating organizational value. The value-creation of knowledge depends on level of sharing knowledge and skills among people across the organization. So most companies are focused on enhancing their capability of knowledge sharing to create new knowledge. The aim of this paper is to test empirically the degree of influence of different knowledge-sharing mechanisms on the knowledge creation capability of Iranian manufacturing industries. A question survey was administered to a sample of manufacturing industries operating in Iran to elicit opinions of the personnel on the relationship between knowledge sharing and knowledge creation. The questions were structured mostly based on Sa ́enz et al. (2009) and Choi & Lee (2002) studies. More than 400 respondents from 16 organizations responded to the survey. A short training course was held in all sample firms separately to explain importance and applications of knowledge management for respondents. SPSS and LISREL software were utilized to analyze research data using Regression tests and Structural equation modeling (SEM). Results obtained show that knowledge sharing has a positive influence on the knowledge creation in Iranian manufacturing industries. However, a meaningful relationship was observed between information technology and management processes and two constructs of knowledge creation. The main contribution of the paper is to provide empirical evidence about the impact of knowledge sharing on knowledge creation. Moreover, it reveals what the most effective knowledge-sharing mechanisms are for this purpose, and provides companies with some implications in order to shape their knowledge management strategies.

Book excerpt: Modern companies are increasingly likely to work in a project management environment, which ensures their success in the implementation of innovation. The aim of the study is to prove that tacit knowledge is a mediator for creativity and project performance. Creativity as one of the crucial sources of innovation is stimulated by tacit knowledge. Bearing this fact in mind, the authors studied relations between tacit knowledge, creativity and the outcome of a project. For this purpose, they conducted a study of 514 Polish professionals with different functions and experience in managing projects in construction industry. The results indicate that the direct effect of tacit knowledge on project performance is rather minor but indirect effects mediated by creativity affect the final project performance. That situation also emphasizes the specific nature of tacit knowledge. It is not easily noticeable and hard to measure, however its indirect influence proves its crucial role in value creation. The data collected during the study has been analyzed using the equal structural modelling method. The results point out to a new context of tacit knowledge sharing as a key factor in the process of creating innovation. Nowadays tacit knowledge sharing is crucial for creation of innovation in project teams. The presented model highlights the essence of these relations.

The success of projects relies on the management of both tacit and explicit knowledge. This situation calls for a method for disseminating tacit knowledge from individuals to achieve higher performance and success value in construction projects. For the purpose, this study first articulates the problems of knowledge management in the construction industry. Then, by reviewing some knowledge engineering and management literatures, this research sets a theoretical foundation of knowledge management in the construction industry. A questionnaire survey was used to investigate and examine the current situation of knowledge management in UK and China construction industry. The result of frequency analysis and nonparametric test analysis provides the perceptions on the importance of knowledge transfer, the implementation of knowledge transfer, the resources of knowledge, and barriers for tacit knowledge transfer. From the literature review, this study proposes a tacit knowledge transfer process framework (3I) and identifies a series of factors correlated with effectiveness of knowledge transfer. This thesis also identifies four main independent variables - organsiational culture, organizational structure, IT technology and No-IT technology, and investigates the relationship between organisational elements with these factors and the performance of knowledge transfer. The findings are based on three case studies and responses of questionnaire survey and interviews. The results reveal that there are significant relationships between some of the variables and either the creation of knowledge assets or performance of knowledge transfer. Therefore, it is necessary for construction organsiations to consider these elements in developing and implementing a knowledge management strategy/system in a construction organisation. This study proposes a practical methodology to transfer knowledge by using an integrated system (TKTMS). The TKTMS can be an effective tool for all project members to transfer tacit knowledge across firms' boundaries and accelerate the speed of knowledge creation, share and transfer in the construction industry. The integration of the function model (IDEF0) with the information model (IDEF1) is applied to understand the necessary function/information for consideration in the 3I model and implement TKTMS.
