Book excerpt: Strictly speaking, the term regulatory peptides may include any peptide which has a regulatory function in any organism. In recent years, how ever, the term has come to mean those originally classified as brain-gut peptides. The peptides initially defined as those belonging to the brain gut axis had a dual location in neurones of the brain and endocrine cells of the gut. We now include a number of neuropeptides found in the autonomic nervous system of the gut, the cardiovascular system and other systems. To many scientists comparative physiology means comparison of the mechanisms of certain functions in the rat, the guinea-pig, the cat and maybe some other mammal. If the philosophy is that man is the centre of the universe and other mammals can be used as 'models' of man, this may well be the most useful way to study the functions of the human being, without actually chopping somebody up. However, with a some what wider perspective on life, it is easy to see the importance of a full understanding of the function of all living organisms, in its own right as well as a link in the evolution towards individuals able to survive and reproduce in very different environments. The importance of com parative studies in all living organisms cannot be emphasized too much. It has been the ambition with this book to treat all animals as equally important.

While sensory physiologists have long recognized differences in response properties among cells in dorsal root and cranial ganglia, the full extent of heterogeneity among these neurons has only recently become apparent. Phenotypic diversity is the underlying theme of this unique work, which summarizes our current understanding of the individual characteristics and development of sensory neurons. The chapters are arranged in three cohesive sections. The first describes heterogeneity in the function, biochemical make-up, ion channels, membrane properties, and central projection patterns of dorsal root ganglion neurons. The second section discusses the development of sensory neurons, covering such topics as the origins of dorsal root and cranial ganglia, adhesive interactions involved in axon outgrowth, trophic dependence of sensory neurons, and the development of the physiological properties and central and peripheral connections of dorsal root ganglion neurons. GER is a common clinical problem that affects large segments of the general population. The spectrum of problems associated with GER is now known to also involve extra-esophageal sites. Respiratory diseases, in particular bronchial asthma, can be exacerbated by multiple triggers, including GER. The relationship between the occurrence of gastroesophageal disorders and changes in respiratory function has been known for over a century, but the mechanism by which intraesophageal acid regurgitation can produce respiratory symptoms is still debated. The reasons for these concurrent pathological events are also not fully understood. Determining, for instance, whether reflux itself initiates or exacerbates asthma, or whether asthma or its treatment primarily causes GER is a matter of current investigation.
