Book excerpt: French realist texts are driven by representations of the body and depend on corporeality to generate narrative intrigue. But anxieties around bodily representation undermine realist claims of objectivity and transparency. Aspects of bodily reality which threaten les bonnes moeurs - gender confusion, sexual appetite, disability, torture, murder, child abuse and disease - rarely occupy the foreground and are instead spurned or only partially alluded to by writers and critics. This wide-ranging study uses the notion of the taboo as a powerful means of interpreting representations of the body. The hidden bodies of realist texts reveal their secrets in unexpected ways. Thompson reads texts by Sand, Rachilde, Maupassant, Hugo, Barbey d'Aurevilly, Mirbeau and Zola alongside modern theorists of the body to show how the figure of the taboo plots an alternative model of author-reader relations based on the struggle to speak the unspeakable. Dr Hannah Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in French at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her first book, Naturalism Redressed: Identity and Clothing in the Novels of Emile Zola, was published by Legenda in 2004.

Book excerpt: A class field trip unlocked a whole new world. The Gift may have skipped a generation — but now it has come back, stronger than ever. Although, it’s not the only thing that has returned to the cities of the lost. More and more Gifteds and Nons alike are disappearing, and now it’s up to a handful of “average” kids to find out who’s behind the series of abductions — and most importantly, to get these people back. Eleven-year-old Zarina, along with five other girls previously living the average Non life, tumbles into a new reality that she’s expected to accept. But there’s simply one problem: no matter what happens, this world seems to be anything but normal. Will she be able to juggle both lives? All of her Gifts? And before anything else — will they be able to face the dark force abducting people? Ayesha wrote this book as an eleven-year-old herself. She was able to publish the book when she was thirteen.

Book Sexual Feelings

Download or read book Sexual Feelings written by Elina Valovirta and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book offers a reader-theoretical model for approaching anglophone Caribbean women’s writing through affects, emotions, and feelings related to sexuality, a prominent theme in the literary tradition. How does an affective framework help us read this tradition of writing that is so preoccupied with sexual feelings? The novelists discussed in the book – chiefly Erna Brodber, Opal Palmer Adisa, Edwidge Danticat, Shani Mootoo, and Oonya Kempadoo – are representative of various anglophone Caribbean island cultures and English-speaking back¬grounds. The study makes astute use of the theoretical writings of such scholars as Sara Ahmed, Milton J. Bennett, Sue Campbell, Linden Lewis, Evelyn O’Callaghan, Lizabeth Paravisini – Gebert, Lynne Pearce, Elspeth Probyn, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, and Rei Terada, as well as the critical writings of Adisa, Brodber, Kempadoo, to shape an individual, focused argument. The works of the creative artists treated, and this volume, hold sexuality and emo¬tions to be vital for meaning-production and knowledge-negotiation across diffe¬rences (be they culturally, geographi¬cally or otherwise marked) that chal¬lenge the postcolonial reading process. Elina Valovirta is a Post-Doctoral Fellow employed by the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS) and stationed in the Department of English, University of Turku, Finland. She has published on Caribbean women’s writing in English, feminist pedagogy, and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: I should have known that perhaps we just never were meant to be together, but it isn't that easy to just let go. It's been years and I tried, however he had a grasp on my mental and emotional being more than anyone else I had met in my life. I believe things happen for a reason yet I wasn't truly satisfied eternally with my life's direction. My feelings are as strong as I remember each moment I had spent with him, some of those memories were not really good yet I wanted to relive them once again. If I had the opportunity I would have left everything just for him. My life became a mockery and all I could do now was laugh at my interesting fate. Life brought me to him in an interesting way and to separate us equally as such. Here I lay on the hospital bed reliving the moments of him once again before my passing.

It was bad enough for Violet Zendel that her twin brother hated her and avoided her like a plague because of her faith. When he became the CEO of their parents' company, she did everything she could to support his success. Then she planned a vacation to help bridge the gap between them and improve their relationship. However, when the news about a shocking event reached her ears during the trip, it shook her to her core—and led to a trail of broken hearts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I heard him staggering down the hallway, banging into the banister sloshing his drink of choice, most likely a gin and tonic, along the way. As he reached for her door, I felt my airways constrict and the walls of the room close in around me. My body stiffened, and my senses numbed, as I listened for the faint squeak of my bedroom door to open softly. I am, 17 year-old aristocratic-born Candace Spencer, and I quickly recognized the monster that prowled the darkness of my sanctuary. My breath faded as the muscular figures slithered into my room and onto my body. My nightmare only lasted a few minutes several times a week but I lost a part of my soul a little bit more during each horrific moment. I closed my eyes and lived one more death as he devoured me, but tonight I vowed it would end. The prominent and respected businessman revered by the community would not return to my bedroom again. Never again! I had no idea how long it had been away; a Spiritual Guide's time was measured very differently compared to human lifetime. Was it a day later or had one or twenty years passed? Right now I had my first assignment in my new form, Mari Santiago, a 16 year-old teenager struggling to survive her family's domestic violence and sexual assaults in the tough streets of New York. The Whispers Within reveals the parallel of two dissimilar lives between two teenagers: one alive and the other dead. Mari comes to know Candace in a manner she would have never dreamt. Candace, having lived life at the opposite economic strata from the inner city life Mari was accustomed to, is only equipped with whispers of encouragement to defeat Mari's demons. How will Candace handle returning to earth as a spirit when she did not deal with her own nemesis while alive? Will Mari be consumed by the demons that surround her or will Candace pave a way for Mari to flee them? Will they both come to know each other's demons? Will Candace's whispers be enough for Mari to conquer her demons while building a new life?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary of untouchable poetry would entail a discussion of the several topics and ideas that are typical of this genre. Identity and Marginalization: Untouchable poetry addresses the difficult issues of how identities are formed in response to marginalization and prejudice based on caste. The poets consistently depict social exclusion experiences and the struggles they faced to maintain their humanity and dignity. Social Injustice and Oppression: Untouchable poets, in fact, raise powerful and audible voices in opposition to the atrocities and social injustices that continue to be meted out to them, including caste violence and untouchability, in addition to being denied access to desirable jobs and education in society at large. Their poetry is a powerful cry for social fairness and reform. Untouchable poets typically use this technique to attack the dominant cultural norms and traditions that uphold caste-based inequalities and discriminatory practices. Additionally, he will present counterculture and alternative discourses that highlight the perspective and voice of the underprivileged. Since untouchable poetry offers voice to a community that has been marginalized and silenced due to opposition from the ruling class and established structures, it is generally seen as their resistance literature.
