Book excerpt: Shelving Guide: Electrical Engineering In 1900 the great German theoretical physicist Max Planck formulated a correct mathematical description of blackbody radiation. Today, understanding the behavior of a blackbody is of importance to many fields including thermal and infrared systems engineering, pyrometry, astronomy, meteorology, and illumination. This book gives an account of the development of Planck’s equation together with many of the other functions closely related to it. Particular attention is paid to the computational aspects employed in the evaluation of these functions together with the various aids developed to facilitate such calculations. The book is divided into three sections. Section I – Thermal radiation and the blackbody problem are introduced and discussed. Early developments made by experimentalists and theoreticians are examined as they strove to understand the problem of the blackbody. Section II – The development of Planck’s equation is explained as are the all-important fractional functions of the first and second kinds which result when Planck’s equation is integrated between finite limits. A number of theoretical developments are discussed that stem directly from Planck’s law, as are the various computational matters that arise when numerical evaluation is required. Basic elements of radiometry that tie together and use many of the theoretical and computational ideas developed is also presented. Section III – A comprehensive account of the various computational aids such as tables, nomograms, graphs, and radiation slide rules devised and used by generations of scientists and engineers when working with blackbody radiation are presented as are more recent aids utilizing computers and digital devices for real-time computations. Scientists and engineers working in fields utilizing blackbody sources will find this book to be a valuable guide in understanding many of the computational aspects and nuances associated with Planck’s equation and its other closely related functions. With over 700 references, it provides an excellent research resource.

Book The Normalized Cumulative Blackbody Functions Their Applications in Thermal Radiation Calculations and Related Subjects

Download or read book The Normalized Cumulative Blackbody Functions Their Applications in Thermal Radiation Calculations and Related Subjects written by Radames K. H. Gebel and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid calculation of the radiant power and the quantum flux emitted by a blackbody source involving any wavelength interval is made possible by the derivations in this paper which introduces the 'normalized cumulative blackbody functions' formulated by the author. Thus, in contrast to conventional blackbody tables, all different radiation temperatures and any wavelength interval are covered by one function which can be compiled in one simple table of very modest volume. The final expressions using these cumulative blackbody functions are uncomplicated equations which can be solved by slide rule operations or, for higher accuracy, by using a desk calculator. Further, the paper introduces an unambiguous symbolism for expressing power and quantum flux radiated by a blackbody source and for expressing performance factors such as conversion yields of broadband radiation detectors. Also equations for calculating the difference in power and quantum flux for blackbody sources against a blackbody background are derived. Illustrative examples for typical situations are calculated. Book Black body Radiative Thermodynamic and Chromatic Functions Tables in Finite Spectral Ranges

Download or read book Black body Radiative Thermodynamic and Chromatic Functions Tables in Finite Spectral Ranges written by Anatoliy I. Fisenko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-14 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides detailed calculated values for the thermal radiative and thermodynamic functions of black-body radiation in finite spectral ranges. The results are presented in tabular form. The areas of thermal power generation, infrared medical diagnostics, solar power and nuclear generation, and astrophysics are included. A range of the thermal radiative and thermodynamic functions are calculated by the authors in the finite frequency/wavenumber/wavelength intervals at different temperatures. This book also contains the tables of the chromaticity coordinates and RGB parameters calculated for different color spaces (Rec.709 (HDTV), sRGB, Adobe RGB). A number of the optimization problems is formulated and solved for various thermal black-body radiative and thermodynamic functions in a finite range of frequencies.

Book Tables for the Energy and Photon Distribution in Equilibrium Radiation Spectra

Download or read book Tables for the Energy and Photon Distribution in Equilibrium Radiation Spectra written by P. A. Apanasevich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tables for the Energy and Photon Distribution in Equilibrium Radiation Spectra covers a collection of tables used for calculating the energy and photon distribution in equilibrium radiation. The book discusses the main characteristics of radiation; the equilibrium between radiation and matter using Kirchhoff's laws; the energy and photon distribution in the spectrum of equilibrium radiation; and the energy and photon distribution of equilibrium radiation over finite frequency intervals. The text then describes heat radiation emitted by real bodies; heat radiation in the space between bodies at different temperatures or in a medium in the absence of total thermodynamic equilibrium; the use of thermal radiation for investigating the properties of a substance; and optical pyrometry. Tables for each of the above mentioned topics are illustrated. Each table is preceded by a description and rules for using it in practical calculations. Numerical values of the conversion coefficients for the different spectral scales and for conversion from densities to fluxes are also given. Those involved in physics, illumination and heat engineering, meteorology, and astrophysics will find the book useful.

Book Solar and Terrestrial Radiation

Download or read book Solar and Terrestrial Radiation written by Kinsell Coulson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar and Terrestrial Radiation: Methods and Measurements basically summarizes instruments used in routine measurements of solar and terrestrial radiation at the earth’s surface. Because of developments in this field, these certain instruments are sufficiently relevant for meteorological and climatological purposes. Although the emphasis of the book is on the radiation instrumentation, basic theory is still covered and discussed for the purpose of understanding basic radiative processes in the atmosphere. The featured instruments in this book show that if used properly, these instruments can eliminate certain deficiencies in climatological data and routine monitoring of the radiative regime of the surface and lower atmosphere. However, the scope of the study is limited in which they cannot be of use in terms of being precise in studies of climatic change, spectral distribution of atmospheric radiation, and other specific meteorological and technological requirements. This book is designed to be of valuable use to meteorologists, climatologists, and physicists. Students, specifically graduate students, can also make use of the book as well.
