Book A New Method for the Calculation of Momentum Heat and Mass Transfer in Laminar Boundary Layer Flow

Download or read book A New Method for the Calculation of Momentum Heat and Mass Transfer in Laminar Boundary Layer Flow written by Richard Mark Sisson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merk's series solution to the momentum equation for steady two-dimensional or axisymmetrical constant-property laminar boundary layer flow was examined. Solutions were obtained to the differential equations associated with the second term in the series. Calculations using this series were made, and it was found to be unsatisfactory because the second term diverges near the point where the first term becomes imaginary. This phenomenon occurs significantly earlier than the actual separation point in every case studied. A new, formally exact series solution for momentum, heat and mass transfer in steady two- dimensional or axisymmetrical constant-property laminar boundary layers was developed. An approximation was introduced to simplify momentum transfer calculations, and an additional approximation was used for heat and mass transfer. Calculations using this method for momentum transfer with several different external velocity distributions and with both low and high rates of injection at the surface compared well with exact solutions. In every case studied, the present method was significantly more accurate than other approximate methods. Heat and mass transfer calculations compared well with experimental data taken from several investigations. Extensive tables of functions associated with the present method have been compiled.

Download or read book Laminar Flow Analysis written by David F. Rogers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-10-30 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major thrust of this book is to present a technique of analysis that aids the formulation, understanding, and solution of problems of viscous flow. The intent is to avoid providing a "canned" program to solve a problem, offering instead a way to recognize the underlying physical, mathematical, and modeling concepts inherent in the solutions. The reader must first choose a mathematical model and derive governing equations based on realistic assumptions, or become aware of the limitations and assumptions associated with existing models. An appropriate solution technique is then selected. The solution technique may be either analytical or numerical. Computer-aided analysis algorithms supplement the classical analyses. The book begins by deriving the Navier-Stokes equation for a viscous compressible variable property fluid. The second chapter considers exact solutions of the incompressible hydrodynamic boundary layer equations solved with and without mass transfer at the wall. Forced convection, free convection, and the compressible laminar boundary layer are discussed in the remaining chapters. The text unifies the various topics by tracing a logical progression from simple to complex governing differential equations and boundary conditions. Numerical, parametric, and directed analysis problems are included at the end of each chapter.

Book Fundamentals of Momentum Heat and Mass Transfer

Download or read book Fundamentals of Momentum Heat and Mass Transfer written by James Welty and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Momentum, Heat and Mass Transfer, Revised, 6th Edition provides a unified treatment of momentum transfer (fluid mechanics), heat transfer and mass transfer. The new edition has been updated to include more modern examples, problems, and illustrations with real world applications. The treatment of the three areas of transport phenomena is done sequentially. The subjects of momentum, heat, and mass transfer are introduced, in that order, and appropriate analysis tools are developed.

Book Mass and Heat Transfer

Download or read book Mass and Heat Transfer written by T. W. Fraser Russell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-11 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text allows instructors to teach a course on heat and mass transfer that will equip students with the pragmatic, applied skills required by the modern chemical industry. This new approach is a combined presentation of heat and mass transfer, maintaining mathematical rigor while keeping mathematical analysis to a minimum. This allows students to develop a strong conceptual understanding, and teaches them how to become proficient in engineering analysis of mass contactors and heat exchangers and the transport theory used as a basis for determining how critical coefficients depend upon physical properties and fluid motions. Students will first study the engineering analysis and design of equipment important in experiments and for the processing of material at the commercial scale. The second part of the book presents the fundamentals of transport phenomena relevant to these applications. A complete teaching package includes a comprehensive instructor's guide, exercises, case studies, and project assignments.
