Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ponds are an exceptional freshwater resource around the world and represent thirty percent of the global surface area of standing water. Furthermore, the millions of ponds which exist exhibit a particularly high biodiversity and have a high potential for ecosystem functions and services. Despite these impressive features, ponds face many threats from a variety of human activities and receive little or no protection under European and national legislation. Consequently, there is an urgent need to protect, consolidate and increase the pond resource in Europe. In order to achieve these objectives, the European Pond Conservation Network (EPCN) was launched 2004 in Geneva. Its aim is to promote the awareness, understanding and conservation of these small water bodies in the European landscape. This volume of “Developments in Hydrobiology” presents a selection of 31 papers presented during EPCN conferences held in 2006 in France (Toulouse) and in 2008 in Spain (Valencia). They represent a diverse collection of themes from across the continent and North Africa and present new and original insights into topics as wide ranging as pond biodiversity; human disturbance; landscape ecology; ecological assessment and monitoring; practical management measures; ecological restoration; hydrology and climate change; invasive species and threatened species.

  • Pages : 582 pages

Download or read book Ancient Rome written by R. Scott Smith and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Terrific . . . exactly the sort of collection we have long needed: one offering a wide range of texts, both literary and documentary, and that--with the inclusion of Sulpicia and Perpetua--allows students to hear the voices of actual women from the ancient world. The translations themselves are fluid; the inclusion of long extracts allows students to sink their teeth into material in ways not possible with traditional source books. The anonymous texts, inscriptions, and other non-literary material topically arranged in the 'Documentary' section will enable students to see how the documentary evidence supplements or undermines the views advanced in the literary texts. This is a book that should be of great use to anyone teaching a survey of the history of Ancient Rome or a Roman Civilization course. I look forward to teaching with this book which is, I think, the best source book I have seen for the way we teach these days." --David Potter, University of Michigan

Philosophers, statesmen, travelers, dramatists, poets, private citizens—the words of all these suggest how the city looked at various periods, how its monuments came to be built, and how they served the people in daily life. Professor Wycherley concentrates on the classical period, illustrating his work with plans, reconstructions, and photographs. Originally published in 1978. Book Later Roman Egypt

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roger S. Bagnall
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Later Roman Egypt written by Roger S. Bagnall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt, with its ever-growing wealth of evidence from the papyri, has in recent decades been one of the liveliest areas of scholarship on the later Roman Empire. This volume collects two dozen articles on the social, economic, and administrative history of Egypt by Roger Bagnall, whose book 'Egypt in Late Antiquity' has helped to bring this region and this evidence into the mainstream of historical debate. In these studies some of the main themes of his work are visible, in particular attempts to explore the possibilities for quantifying not only questions like the burden of taxation or the distribution of land-ownership, but more tantalizing and controversial matters like the rate at which the population of Egypt was Christianized.

Book Black Ships and Sea Raiders

Download or read book Black Ships and Sea Raiders written by Jeffrey P. Emanuel and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean was a time of social, political, and economic upheaval – conditions reflected, in many ways, in the world of Homer’s Odyssey. Jeffrey P. Emanuel examines the Odyssey’s Second Cretan Lie (xiv 191 – 359) in the context of this watershed transition, with particular emphasis on raiding, warfare, maritime technology and tactics, and the evidence for the so-called ‘Sea Peoples’ who have been connected to the events of this period. He focuses in particular on the hero’s description of his frequent raiding activities and on his subsequent sojourn in the land of the pharaohs, and connections between Odysseus’ false narrative and the historical experiences of one particular Sea Peoples group: the ‘Sherden of the Sea.’

Book 1 Kings12 22 Concordia Commentary

Download or read book 1 Kings12 22 Concordia Commentary written by Walter Maier III and published by Concordia Commentary. This book was released on 2019-05 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Kings is a history, written in a selective manner, for the sake of theology. Primarily covering more than 380 years of the history of Israel and its monarchy, from the last part of David's rule to the end of the kingship in Judah, the book of Kings also emphasizes prophets. Despite this concentration, the main subject of this body of literature is still God. This history presents God - the holy, righteous, just, merciful, compassionate, gracious omnipotent, and omniscient Deity - in relationship with Israel. Keeping in the Biblically faithful, Gospel-centered tradition of the acclaimed Concordia Commentary series, this newest addition to the series displays God as the Ruler of the nations, the God of chastisement and punishment, but also the God of deliverance and salvation.
