Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for Determining Common Minerals and Rocks, Vol. 3: September, 1923 In the revision of this text the same general purpose set forth for the first edition has been kept in View. The Tables have been in use for several years in geology clas ses at the University of New Mexico. The author is pleased to know that the manual has been found useful also by people not connected with these classes. The revision con sists of a few corrections and changes in the descriptive matter of several minerals and the amplification of the glossary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for the Determination of the Common Minerals and Rocks The color of a mineral may always be the same, or it may range thru various shades of one color, or the same mineral may have several different colors. Luster is defined as the appearance of the surface in reflected light. Min erais are divided into two groups on the basis of their luster, viz., metallic and non-metallic. Minerals with a metallic luster reflect light like a metal. There are various lusters in the non-metallic group, common ones being vitreous, greasy, earthy, waxy, adamantine, resinous, etc. These are defined in the glossary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for the Determination of Common Minerals Chiefly by Their Physical Properties With Confirmatory Chemical Tests The principal forms and structures of minerals are those due to their crystallization but there are other kinds that are quite independent of crystallization. Hence crystallography is only a part, although the main part, of the general science of the forms and structures or morphology of minerals. Download or read book Tables for the Determination of Minerals written by Edward Henry Kraus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tables for the Determination of Minerals: By Means of Their Physical Properties, Occurrences, and Associates The successful determination of minerals at sight depends upon the ability to make quick and accurate distinctions between the physical properties, occurrences, and associates of the several minerals which may be suggested by the luster, color, form, streak, and hardness, especially, of a given specimen. As a result Of extensive experience in the laboratory and field, luster and color have been made the fundamental basis of these tables, further subdivisions being introduced by the streak and hardness. Minerals with similar physical properties are thus grouped together, aiding the student materially to acquire the necessary facility to make rapid distinctions. The tables include 250 of the most common minerals, classified into three groups, which may be designated as (1) very common, (2) common, and (3) not common, but important. The display given to the name of a mineral indicates at a glance in which of the above groups it has been placed. Page references to several textbooks on mineralogy will be found of great convenience when more detailed descriptions are desired than obviously can be given in determinative tables. Many valuable geological. Materials lie unused for want of knowledge of what they are and how they may be used. It is hoped that it will stimulate an interest in, and a search for, valuable geological products. It did not seem desirable to include tables for the determina tion of minerals by means of the blowpipe and other tests since there are many inexpensive books available. Among these may be mentioned: Tables for the Determination of Common Minerals, by W. O. Crosby. Tables for the Determination of Minerals, by Kraus and Hunt. Mineral Tables for the Determination of Minerals by Their Physical Properties, by A. S. Eakle. A simple, compact, inexpensive blowpipe set has been pre pared by Professor G. M. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Tables for the Determination of Minerals by Their Physical Properties Streak. - The streak of a mineral is the color of its fine powder. It is best obtained by rubbing the Specimen upon the streak-plate until a definite color is produced. Hardness - By hardness is meant the resistance that a mineral offers to abrasion or scratching. The relative hardness of a mineral is usually determined by scratching it successively by minerals or sub stances of known hardness, two minerals of the same hardness mutually scratching each other. The scale of hardness in common use, called the Moh's scale, in ascending degree of hardness, is as follows: 1. Talc; 2, Gypsum; 3, Calcite; 4, Fluorite; 5, Apatite; 6, Feldspar; 7, Quartz; 8, Topaz; 9, Corundum; 10, Diamond. The thumb-nail will scratch minerals up to 25 and the ordinary knife-blade up to 55 in the scale; with a little practice the relative hardness of a mineral under 6 can be approximately determined with a knife-blade. Above 6 the scale of hardness is necessary} The relative hardness of many of the 'metallic or submetallic minerals can Often be judged by the ease or difficulty in obtaining a streak on the streak-plate. Fine fibrous and fine granular minerals usually appear to be much softer than the individual fiber or grain would be, if it were coarser. Also the surface of some minerals is often much softer than the fresh interior, owing to alteration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Text Book of Important Minerals and Rocks

Download or read book A Text Book of Important Minerals and Rocks written by S. E. Tillman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Important Minerals and Rocks: With Tables for the Determination of Minerals This book is the slow outgrowth of the efforts to meet the necessities of this institution for a convenient text-book of the important minerals and rocks. The number of mineral species has reached nearly one thousand and is constantly increasing. Of this number less than one-tenth is of common occurrence or can be considered of much economic importance, and a small proportion of this same tenth includes the essential constituents of all rocks. To embrace in descriptive text all mineral species necessarily results in an embarrassing mass of matter for the general student. Similar embarrassment, though to a less extent, is experienced in complete descriptions of all the rocks. To reduce these descriptions to a convenient yet satisfactory form for general students is the object of the present effort. There are described in the book about seventy-five distinct species of the important and, in the main, common minerals, and the principal members of the different classes of rocks. It is thought that the selection is extended enough for general purposes, and it includes abundant material for the study of both minerals and rocks. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Determinative Mineralogy: With Tables for the Determination of Minerals by Means of Their Chemical and Physical Characters This book has been prepared primarily for the use of stu dents in determinative mineralogy, but it has also been made sufficiently inclusive to meet the demands Of the geologist and the mining engineer in all but the rarest cases. The accompanying tables include 380 minerals, or from 100 to 150 more than are fully described in the current textbooks. Besides the more common minerals and those of economic value as ores or otherwise, many of the less common and even rarer species have also been included. Some idea of relative importance is suggested by the sizes of type in which the names are printed. Those that have been omitted are very rare and, from a practical point of view, of little present importance.
