Book The Development of the Number Field Sieve

Download or read book The Development of the Number Field Sieve written by Arjen K. Lenstra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number field sieve is an algorithm for finding the prime factors of large integers. It depends on algebraic number theory. Proposed by John Pollard in 1988, the method was used in 1990 to factor the ninth Fermat number, a 155-digit integer. The algorithm is most suited to numbers of a special form, but there is a promising variant that applies in general. This volume contains six research papers that describe the operation of the number field sieve, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Pollard's original manuscript is included. In addition, there is an annotated bibliography of directly related literature.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry O. Pollak Chairman of the International Program Committee Bell Laboratories Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA The Fourth International Congress on Mathematics Education was held in Berkeley, California, USA, August 10-16, 1980. Previous Congresses were held in Lyons in 1969, Exeter in 1972, and Karlsruhe in 1976. Attendance at Berkeley was about 1800 full and 500 associate members from about 90 countries; at least half of these come from outside of North America. About 450 persons participated in the program either as speakers or as presiders; approximately 40 percent of these came from the U.S. or Canada. There were four plenary addresses; they were delivered by Hans Freudenthal on major problems of mathematics education, Hermina Sinclair on the relationship between the learning of language and of mathematics, Seymour Papert on the computer as carrier of mathematical culture, and Hua Loo-Keng on popularising and applying mathematical methods. Gearge Polya was the honorary president of the Congress; illness prevented his planned attendence but he sent a brief presentation entitled, "Mathematics Improves the Mind". There was a full program of speakers, panelists, debates, miniconferences, and meetings of working and study groups. In addition, 18 major projects from around the world were invited to make presentations, and various groups representing special areas of concern had the opportunity to meet and to plan their future activities.

Book excerpt: One of the rising stars in the international art scene, Kader Attia (b. 1970) is a French-Algerian multidisciplinary artist whose powerful yet complex images, objects and installations examine the way cultures and histories have been constructed.Attia often plays with the vocabulary of museums and architecture to trouble the boundaries between different worlds, particularly Western and non-Western, through his use of re-appropriated and repaired everyday objects and ephemera, such as African masks, stapled paving cracks, assemblages of prostheses and photographs of surgical reconstruction. An in-depth interview with Hayward Gallery director Ralph Rugoff explores the artist's major themes, while art historians and other experts draw out particular threads to examine in depth. Compact but wide-ranging, this is a publication to be held in the hand - an indispensable first guide to an artist with an exceptional perspective on the way humans think about their place in the world. The book features an interview with Ralph Rugoff and essays by Nicola Clayton, Jean-Michel Frodon, Francoise Vergès and Giovanna Zapperi.Published alongside Hayward Gallery's exhibition, London (12 February - 6 May 2019).

Book Children s Socio Economic Rights Democracy And The Courts

Download or read book Children s Socio Economic Rights Democracy And The Courts written by Aoife Nolan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with children's economic and social rights (sometimes referred to simply as children's social rights). Despite increased academic interest in both children's rights and socio-economic rights over the last two decades, children's social and economic rights remain a comparatively neglected area. This is particularly true with regard to the role of the courts in the enforcement of such social rights. Aoife Nolan's book remedies this omission, focussing on the circumstances in which the courts can and should give effect to the social and economic rights of children. The arguments put forward are located within the context of, and develop, long-standing debates in constitutional law, democratic theory and human rights. The claims made by the author are supported and illustrated by concrete examples of judicial enforcement of children's social and economic rights from a variety of jurisdictions. The work is thus rooted in both theory and practice. The author brings together and addresses a wide range of issues that have never previously been considered together in book form. These include children's socio-economic rights; children as citizens and their position in relation to democratic decision-making processes; the implications of children and their rights for democratic and constitutional theory; the role of the courts in ensuring the enforcement of children's rights; and the debates surrounding the litigation and adjudication of social and economic rights. This book thus represents a major original contribution to the existing scholarship in a range of areas including human (and specifically social) rights, legal and political theory and constitutional law. 'Children's rights were often thought to be synonymous with economic and social welfare prior to the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. Ironically, since that time, remarkably little scholarship has been devoted to the vitally important economic and social rights dimensions of children's rights. Nolan's book singlehandedly remedies that neglect and does so in a sophisticated, nuanced and balanced way. It provides a superb account of the pros and cons of judicial activism in promoting these rights.' Philip Alston, John Norton Pomeroy Professor, NYU Law School 'Thus far the burgeoning literature on the judicial enforcement of socio-economic rights has failed to engage in a sustained, systemic manner with this topic from the perspective of children and the complexity of their status as citizens within contemporary democracies. This book fills this gap and makes a major contribution to the literature in the three interrelated areas of the judicial review of socio-economic rights claims, children's rights, and democratic theory. Nolan navigates skilfully through the dense, but rich literature in these areas as well as relevant international and comparative law. In so doing she illuminates both the pitfalls and potential of resorting to courts in a partial response to the multifaceted and deeply entrenched global phenomenon of child poverty.' Professor Sandra Liebenberg, HF Oppenheimer Professor of Human Rights Law, University of Stellenbosch Law Faculty. Winner of the Kevin Boyle Book Prize 2012, awarded by the Irish Association of Law Teachers to a book that is deemed to have made an outstanding contribution to the understanding of law.

Book Modern Times Literary Change

Download or read book Modern Times Literary Change written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Times. Literary Change seeks to redefine what we mean by "literature" and "history" in European modernism studies. This book develops a new functionalist approach for modern literary historiography and introduces alternative methods for dealing with European writings and their multiple mediatizations, histories and functions. Modern Times. Literary Change illustrates these new insights in chapters dealing with canonized figures (such as Robert Musil, André Breton, Man Ray and Denis de Rougemont) as well as internationally less known writers (such as Belgian avant-gardists Louis Scutenaire and Paul van Ostaijen and Italian novelist Enrico Emanuelli). For both its theoretical argument and its subtle readings this book will be of interest to all those who study European literature from the modernist period. MDRN is a research-group based at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and supervised by Jan Baetens, Sascha Bru, Dirk de Geest, David Martens and Bart Van den Bossche.
