This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive catalogue of the Getty Museum’s significant collection of French Rococo ébénisterie furniture. This catalogue focuses on French ébénisterie furniture in the Rococo style dating from 1735 to 1760. These splendid objects directly reflect the tastes of the Museum’s founder, J. Paul Getty, who started collecting in this area in 1938 and continued until his death in 1976. The Museum’s collection is particularly rich in examples created by the most talented cabinet masters then active in Paris, including Bernard van Risenburgh II (after 1696–ca. 1766), Jacques Dubois (1694–1763), and Jean-François Oeben (1721–1763). Working for members of the French royal family and aristocracy, these craftsmen excelled at producing veneered and marquetried pieces of furniture (tables, cabinets, and chests of drawers) fashionable for their lavish surfaces, refined gilt-bronze mounts, and elaborate design. These objects were renowned throughout Europe at a time when Paris was considered the capital of good taste. The entry on each work comprises both a curatorial section, with description and commentary, and a conservation report, with construction diagrams. An introduction by Anne-Lise Desmas traces the collection’s acquisition history, and two technical essays by Arlen Heginbotham present methodologies and findings on the analysis of gilt-bronze mounts and lacquer. The free online edition of this open-access publication is available at www.getty.edu/publications/rococo/ and includes zoomable, high-resolution photography. Also available are free PDF, EPUB, and Kindle/MOBI downloads of the book, and JPG downloads of the main catalogue images.

Download or read book Impressionism Scotland written by Frances Fowle and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century Scotland was one of the most powerful industrial nations in the world. Huge wealth was generated in cities such as Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee and this period saw the emergence of a new breed of mercantile art collector, eager to invest in modern European art. This book is the first to explore the Scottish taste for Impressionism and Post-Impressionism c.1865-1930 and the impact of this art on two generations of Scottish artists. The term 'Impressionism' was then applied to artists as diverse as Corot, Whistler and the Glasgow Boys, as well as Monet, Degas and their contemporaries and the essays in this book - by leading scholars in the field - address a number of themes, including the influence of Dutch and French Realism on Scottish art, modern life imagery in the work of the Glasgow Boys, the taste for Whistler and his importance for Scottish art; William Burrell's collection of Impressionist pictures; and the impact of French art on the Scottish Colourists. Published to accompany the major exhibition Impressionism and Scotland (2008). AUTHOR: Dr Frances Fowle holds a joint post as Senior Curator of French Art at the National Gallery of Scotland and Lecturer in Art History at the University of Edinburgh. She has published widely on nineteenth century art, collecting and the art market and her publications include Monet and French Landscape (Edinburgh 2006) and (with Richard Thomson) Soil and Stone: Impressionism, Urbanism, Environment (London 2003). 160 colour & 40 b/w illustrations

Download or read book Picasso Posters written by Pablo Picasso and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pablo Picasso is the artistic giant of the twentieth century, and perhaps only Leonardo da Vinci rivals his fame throughout the history of art. In working life that spanned nearly eighty years, Picasso painted some of the archetypal images of modern art, including Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and Guernica. But he did more that create individual works of originality and genius. Picasso invented, and inspired others to invent, a whole new vocabulary and way of thinking about art which have shaped the progress of modernism throughout the twentieth century. Picasso's fame is indisputable but rests largely on his oil paintings. A lesser-known but crucially important part of Picasso's oeuvre is his graphic work, in particular his poster designs. From the 1940s to the 1960s Picasso produced hundreds of designs for posters, many advertising exhibitions of his work. They are interesting and important not only for their striking simplicity and bold color, but also because they sum up many of the expressionist ideas he had developed from Guernica onword. Themes and images from his paintings and ceramics such as bulls and goats, faces and the dove of peace recur and give remarkable coherence to this body of work. Picasso Posters presents a comprehensive panorama of Picasso's poster art. An illustrated introduction tells the story of Picasso's long life and career, and sets his poster work in the context of the genre's history and of his paintings, drawings, and sculpture. Sixty of Picasso's finest posters are reproduced in large-scale color plates, making Picasso Posters a sumptuous., informative, and much-needed study of this little-known aspect of the master's work."--Publisher's description

Download or read book The Glasgow Boys written by Roger Billcliffe and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 19th century, a group of young Glasgow-based painters established an international reputation for realism and plein-air landscape painting. Led by James Guthrie, John Lavery, Arthur Melville, George Henry, and E. A. Hornel, the Glasgow Boys, as they came to be known, shared an enthusiasm for strong, fresh colors, naturalistic subject matter, and a willingness to travel outside Scotland for subjects and settings. Their enthusiasm for naturalism was equaled only by their dislike of the Scottish arts establishment. In this widely acclaimed book, Roger Billcliffe describes not only the work of the individual artists but also their rejection by local collectors and officialdom before European success caused their work to become much in demand. First published 20 years ago, the book rekindled interest in the group and their work. Now redesigned with more than 200 illustrations in color, it introduces the collective to a new generation of readers and collectors.
