Book The Paintings of Dirck Van Baburen Ca 1592 93 1624

Download or read book The Paintings of Dirck Van Baburen Ca 1592 93 1624 written by Wayne E. Franits and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirck van Baburen (1592/93-1624) ranks among the most influential Dutch followers of the famous Italian painter Caravaggio. After concluding his training in his native Utrecht, Van Baburen traveled to Italy where he would remain for about eight years. The young artist enjoyed great success there, working for such major patrons as Vicenzo Giustiniani and the Spanish diplomatic representative to the Papacy, Pietro Cussida. Upon Van Baburen's return to Utrecht in late 1620, he established himself as one of that city's major painters by producing engaging work that combined innovative subject matter and appropriations of contemporary Italian art. Franits's monograph is the first major study of the artist in nearly 50 years. It consists of a lengthy introduction that explores Van Baburen's development as an artist and the reception of his work among contemporaries, followed by a comprehensive catalogue raisonné of his 42 authentic paintings, the 29 associated with the artist and/or his workshop, 152 rejected works, 18 that are lost, and lastly, 5 drawings that have been linked to Van Baburen directly or related to his paintings. Consequently, this book provides a much-needed reassessment of Van Baburen's oeuvre, addressing, for example, new pictures that have appeared on the art market in recent decades and exploring his hitherto understudied yet critical Italian period.

This richly illustrated study is the first consider the manifold functions and meanings of Halss distinctive handling of paint. Atkins explores the uniqueness of Halss approach to painting and the relationship of his manner to seventeenth-century aesthetics. He also investigates the economic motivations and advantages of his methods, the operation of the style as a personal and workshop brand, and the apparent modernity of the artists style. The book seeks to understand the multiple levels on which Halss consciously cultivated manner of painting operated for himself, his pupils and assistants, his clients, and succeeding generations of viewers. As a result, the book offers a wholly new understanding of one of the leading artists of the Dutch Golden Age, and one of the most formative painters in the history of art in the Western tradition. It also provides a much needed interrogation of the interrelationships of subjectivity, style, authorship, methods of artistic and commercial production, economic consumption, and art theory in early modernity.

Despite the drawings renown - both during Ruben's own lifetime and in contemporary art scholarship - the reasons why it was made and whether it actually depicts a specific Asian person remain a mystery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic, every gentleman of standing had himself eternalized in a portrait. In Holland, these gentlemen were burghers, not aristocrats, or princes of the church. They were prosperous merchants, scholars, generals, and stadholders, seen in official and private settings, alone or in the company of colleagues, or surrounded by their wives and children. Seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture is a remarkable phenomenon: never before had so many portraits been painted. Today, these pictures offer insight into the taste, fashion, occupations, and ambitions of affluent 17th-century individuals. The two great masters of Dutch portraiture, Rembrandt and Frans Hals, are both represented here.

Book How to Create Beauty

Download or read book How to Create Beauty written by Lyckle de Vries and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) wrote a booklet on the art of drawing (1701) and a manual on painting (1707). The latter, the "Groot Schilderboek", is the subject of this study by art historian Lyckle de Vries. This book may change our appreciation of Dutch seventeenth-century painting since it shifts the reader's attention from art theory and iconology to practical studio work: designing and making paintings in an attempt to create beauty and quality. With his fascinating reevaluation of De Lairesse's book and a helpful translation, De Vries offers a treasuretrove of information not easily found elsewhere. This book is indispensable for art historian, for students and teachers of art schools, and those with an interest in technical research and restoration. NB: the English translation of the first volume of the "Schilderboek" is a working translation by the author and is included on a CD-rom or can be downloaded from our site.
