En 1812, il quitta Smyrne pour se rendre en Égypte, et c'est à visiter ce pays, la Nubie et les contrées voisines qu'il a employées les treize années qui se sont écoulées jusqu'à son retour dans sa patrie. Le livre que nous annonçons aujourd'hui n'est que l'avant-coureur d'un grand ouvrage que l'auteur doit publier bientôt et qui contient ses observations et le résultat de ses nombreux et variés travaux sur : - L'histoire naturelle (botanique et zoologie), - Les antiquités, - La géographie, - La topographie, - Les moeurs, usage, professions, - La chirurgie, - La médecine, - L'agriculture, - Les arts industriels, - Les beaux-arts - La météorologie, - Etc. M. Rifaud revient avec près de huit mille dessins d'objets inédits dans l'antiquité et d'histoire naturelle, coloriés avec le soin le plus scrupuleux. Il a trouvé soixante-six statues; six monuments et temples ont été déterrés et déblayés par ses soins dans l'enceinte de l'ancienne Thèbes et deux cents inscriptions hiéroglyphiques, cubiques, grecques, latines et arabes ont été transcrites de sa main. En outre, il rapporte de nombreuses collections en nature et l'on pourra ainsi vérifier l'exactitude de ses dessins. Le tableau de l'Égypte peut se diviser en deux parties : 1. La première renferme toutes les instructions générales nécessaires au voyageur qui veut parcourir l'Égypte : - Les relations avec les autorités européennes ou du pays, - Le caractère des diverses classes ou races d'habitants, - La manière de traiter avec elles, - L'hygiène, - Le prix des denrées, - La manière de se vêtir, de se nourrir, - Les moyens de transport, - Les fouilles des monuments, - Les acquisitions d'objets d'antiquités, - L'art de recueillir des renseignements, de former et de conserver des collections. Le tout est l'objet de nombreuses et sages observations, et de judicieux conseils. 2. La deuxième partie de l'ouvrage contient une suite d'excursions, d'itinéraires proprement dits, au moyen desquels on peut tracer sa route dans tous les sens. L'auteur indique chaque ville ou village, les objets qu'il y a à visiter, les précautions à prendre. On pourra juger de l'importance et de l'exactitude presque minutieuse du travail de M. Rifaud, par les deux morceaux suivants.
