Book excerpt: The culture, history, and spirit of the Hispanic Southwest are brought to readers through this fascinating collection of 45 cuentos (stories and legends) from the region. From ancient creation myths of the Aztecs and traditional tales of Spanish colonialists to an eclectic sampling of the work of modern Latino storytellers, this book provides a rich tapestry of both obscure and well-loved stories-religious stories; animal tales; stories of magic, transformation, and wisdom; and chistes (short comic tales). Fifteen tales are also presented in Spanish. The origin and historical development of the stories are examined in an introductory chapter. Book Clandestine Crossings

Download or read book Clandestine Crossings written by David Spener and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clandestine Crossings delivers an in-depth description and analysis of the experiences of working-class Mexican migrants at the beginning of the twenty-first century as they enter the United States surreptitiously with the help of paid guides known as coyotes. Drawing on ethnographic observations of crossing conditions in the borderlands of South Texas, as well as interviews with migrants, coyotes, and border officials, Spener details how migrants and coyotes work together to evade apprehension by U.S. law enforcement authorities as they cross the border. In so doing, he seeks to dispel many of the myths that misinform public debate about undocumented immigration to the United States. The hiring of a coyote, Spener argues, is one of the principal strategies that Mexican migrants have developed in response to intensified U.S. border enforcement. Although this strategy is typically portrayed in the press as a sinister organized-crime phenomenon, Spener argues that it is better understood as the resistance of working-class Mexicans to an economic model and set of immigration policies in North America that increasingly resemble an apartheid system. In the absence of adequate employment opportunities in Mexico and legal mechanisms for them to work in the United States, migrants and coyotes draw on their social connections and cultural knowledge to stage successful border crossings in spite of the ever greater dangers placed in their path by government authorities.

Book Bibliographic Guide to Chicana and Latina Narrative

Download or read book Bibliographic Guide to Chicana and Latina Narrative written by Kathy Leonard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-08-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a dramatic increase in the amount of narrative work published by Chicana and Latina authors in the past 5 to 10 years. Nonetheless, there has been little attempt to catalog this material. This reference provides convenient access to all forms of narrative written by Chicana and Latina authors from the early 1940s through 2002. In doing so, it helps users locate these works and surveys the growth of this vast body of literature. The volume cites more than 2,750 short stories, novels, novel excerpts, and autobiographies written by some 600 Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, Dominican American, and Nuyorican women authors. These citations are grouped in five indexes: an author/title index, title/author index, anthology index, novel index, and autobiography index. Short annotations are provided for the anthologies, novels, and autobiographies. Thus the user who knows the title of a work can discover the author, the other works the author has written, and the anthologies in which the author's shorter pieces have been reprinted, along with information about particular works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two brothers engaged in drug smuggling cross the U.S. Mexican border so often that they know precisely when and where U.S. Border Patrol agents are watching. In The Night Sun, Miguel and Cesar Ramirez-Barrios come under fire from rival drug cartels and the American Border Patrol, as well as their own cartel while crossing the border with a large amount of cocaine. Corruption, greed, and deceit entangle these powerful groups as they wrestle for control of this dangerous zone of Southern Arizona near Ambos Nogales, the official port of entry on the international border. When the mutilated bodies of two American border patrol agents are found there, Alejandra Mendoza Thomas is the local TV personality covering the gruesome murders. Miguel and Cesar's ill-fated journey moving their drugs promptly takes an unexpected detour that puts them at the epicenter of the cartels' campaign of carnage along the border. In desperation, Cesar prays to Jesus Malverde, the patron saint of narco traffickers, and also pays homage to The Night Sun, the Mayan legend of the jaguar. While Miguel doesn't believe in the Mexican black arts, he too begins to pray as their journey north explodes in violence.
