Book Tao Te Ching

    Book Details:
  • Author : Laozi
  • Publisher : SkyLight Paths Publishing
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 1594732043
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Tao Te Ching written by Laozi and published by SkyLight Paths Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enduring wisdom of the Tao Te Ching can become a companion for your own spiritual journey. Reportedly written by a sage named Lao Tzu over 2,500 years ago, the Tao Te Ching is one of the most succinct--and yet among the most profound--spiritual texts ever written. Short enough to read in an afternoon, subtle enough to study for a lifetime, the Tao Te Ching distills into razor-sharp poetry centuries of spiritual inquiry into the Tao--the "Way" of the natural world around us that reveals the ultimate organizing principle of the universe. Derek Lin's insightful commentary, along with his new translation from the original Chinese--a translation that sets a whole new standard for accuracy--will inspire your spiritual journey and enrich your everyday life. It highlights the Tao Te Ching's insights on simplicity, balance, and learning from the paradoxical truths you can see all around you: finding strength through flexibility (because bamboo bends, it is tough to break); achieving goals by transcending obstacles (water simply flows around rocks on its way to the sea); believing that small changes bring powerful results (a sapling, in time, grows into a towering tree). Now you can experience the wisdom and power of Lao Tzu's words even if you have no previous knowledge of the Tao Te Ching. SkyLight Illuminations provides insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that describes helpful historical background, explains the Tao Te Ching's poetic imagery, and elucidates the ancient Taoist wisdom that will speak to your life today and energize your spiritual quest.

Book Ko Tautoro Te pito o Toku Ao

Download or read book Ko Tautoro Te pito o Toku Ao written by Hone Sadler and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ngapuhi is the largest iwi in New Zealand and its people have occupied the northern North Island, from Tamaki in the south to Te Rerenga Wairua in the north, from the time of their arrival from Hawaiki. Ko Tautoro, Te Pito o Toku Ao is Ngapuhi elder Hone Sadler’s powerful account of the origins, history and culture of the Ngapuhi people – a profound introduction to the Sacred House of Puhi. Sadler illustrates the unbroken chain of Ngapuhi sovereignty by looking in-depth at his own hapu of Ngati Moerewa, Ngati Rangi and Ngai Tawake ki te Waoku of Tautoro and Mataraua. The narrative is told through weaving together karakia and whakapapa, histories and korero that have been part of the oral traditions of Ngapuhi’s whanau, hapu and iwi and handed down through the generations on marae and other gathering places. Presented first to open the Ngapuhi’s claim before the Waitangi Tribunal, Sadler’s narrative is a powerful Maori oral account, presented here in te reo and English on facing pages, of the story of New Zealand’s largest iwi.

Book He Pukapuka Tataku i Nga Mahi a Te Rauparaha Nui A Record of the Life of the Great Te Rauparaha

Download or read book He Pukapuka Tataku i Nga Mahi a Te Rauparaha Nui A Record of the Life of the Great Te Rauparaha written by Tamihana Te Rauparaha and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Te Rauparaha is most well known today as the composer of the haka &‘Ka mate', made famous the world over by the All Blacks. A major figure in nineteenth-century history, Te Rauparaha was responsible for rearranging the tribal landscape of a large part of the country after leading his tribe Ngati Toa to migrate to Kapiti Island. He is venerated by his own descendants but reviled with equal passion by the descendants of those tribes who were on the receiving end of his military campaigns in the musket-war era. He Pukapuka Tataku i nga Mahi a Te Rauparaha Nui is a 50,000-word account in te reo Maori of Te Rauparaha's life, written by his son Tamihana Te Rauparaha between 1866 and 1869. A pioneering work of Maori (and, indeed, indigenous) biography, Tamihana's narrative weaves together the oral accounts of his father and other kaumatua to produce an extraordinary record of Te Rauparaha and his rapidly changing world. Edited and translated by Ross Calman, a descendant of Te Rauparaha, He Pukapuka Tataku i nga Mahi a Te Rauparaha Nui makes available for the first time this major work of Maori literature in a parallel Maori/English edition.

Book Ko te Whenua te Utu Land Is the Price

Download or read book Ko te Whenua te Utu Land Is the Price written by M. P. K. Sorrenson and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, Keith Sorrenson—one of New Zealand's leading historians and himself of mixed Maori and Pakeha descent—has dived deeper than anyone into the story of two peoples in New Zealand. In this new book, Sorrenson brings together his major writing from the last 56 years into a powerful whole—covering topics from the origins of Maori (and Pakeha ideas about those origins), through land purchases and the King Movement of the 19th century, and on to 20th-century politics and the new history of the Waitangi Tribunal. Throughout his career, Sorrenson has been concerned with the international context for New Zealand history while also attempting to understand and explain Maori conceptions and Pakeha ideas from the inside. And he has been determined to tell the real story of Maori losses of land and their political responses as, in the face of Pakeha colonization, they became a minority in their own country. Ko te Whenua te Utu / Land Is the Price is a powerful history of Maori and Pakeha in New Zealand.

Book Te Puna A New Zealand Mission Station

Download or read book Te Puna A New Zealand Mission Station written by Angela Middleton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical missionary societies have been associated with the processes of colonisation throughout the globe, from India to Africa and into the Pacific. In late 18th-century Britain, the Church Missionary Society for Africa and the East (CMS) began its missionary ventures, and in the first decade of the 19th-century, sent three of its members to New South Wales, Australia, and then on to New Zealand, an unknown, little-explored part of the world. Across the globe, a common material culture travelled with its evangelizing (and later colonizing) settlers, with artefacts appearing as cultural markers from Cape Town in South Africa, to Tasmania in Australia and the even more remote Bay of Islands in New Zealand. After missionization, colonization occurred. Additionally, common themes of interaction with indigenous peoples, household economy, the development of commerce, and social and gender relations also played out in these communities. This work is unique in that it provides the first archaeological examination of a New Zealand mission station, and as such, makes an important contribution to New Zealand historical archaeology and history. It also situates the case study in a global context, making a significant contribution to the international field of mission archaeology. It informs a wider audience about the processes of colonization and culture contact in New Zealand, along with the details of the material culture of the country’s first European settlers, providing a point of comparison with other outposts of British colonization.
