This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern education, students and teaching methodologies face many challenges that hinder smooth development. The digital age presents students with information overload, impeding the cultivation of their critical thinking skills. Traditional language teaching methods must be revised to prepare students for the intricacies of a globalized, multilingual world. The rise in academic demands contributes to heightened stress levels among students. Despite the urgency of environmental challenges, educational systems need a cohesive focus on eco-conscious practices. The abrupt transition to virtual learning during crises has exposed challenges in adapting to and fully realizing the potential of virtual environments. These interrelated issues underscore the imperative for a comprehensive solution that aligns pedagogical practices with the demands of contemporary society. Educational Innovation to Address Complex Societal Challenges begins by dissecting pedagogical renewal and educational innovation, illustrating their expansive reach and adaptability in addressing the diverse educational challenges of our time. It emphasizes that these innovative elements extend beyond mere educational enhancements, presenting many opportunities to catalyze substantial societal change. A crucial aspect highlighted is the reciprocal relationship between educational practices and social reality, creating a symbiotic circle that adds meaning to the educational process.

Book excerpt: This is an original sociological study of breast cancer patients' participation in Internet spaces. While much has been debated about the significance of the Internet, the actual processes of communication in which people engage online are little understood as yet. Exploring the ways in which participants in online spaces configure their experience into a story, the book presents readers with an innovative way of understanding online communication as a socially significant activity. The substantive focus of storytelling online is analyzed sensitively and thoroughly in its specificity as a social phenomenon. At the same time it is connected to a broad range of debates on communication and Internet, health, illness, and social agency.

Book Tackling Chronic Disease in Europe

Download or read book Tackling Chronic Disease in Europe written by Reinhard Busse and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2010 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic conditions and diseases are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Europe, accounting for 86% of total premature deaths, and research suggests that complex conditions such as diabetes and depression will impose an even greater health burden in the future - and not only for the rich and elderly in high-income countries, but increasingly for the poor as well as low- and middle-income countries. The epidemiologic and economic analyses in the first part of the book suggest that policy-makers should make chronic disease a priority. This book highlights the issues and focuses on the strategies and interventions that policy-makers have at their disposal to tackle this increasing challenge. Strategic discussed in the second part of this volume include (1) prevention and early detection, (2) new provider qualifications (e.g. nurse practitioners) and settings, (3) disease management programmes and (4) integrated care models. But choosing the right strategies will be difficult, particularly given the limited evidence on effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. In the third part, the book therefore outlines and discusses institutional and organizational challenges for policy-makers and managers: (1) stimulating the development of new effective pharmaceuticals and medical devices, (2) designing appropriate financial incentives, (3) improving coordination, (4) using information and communication technology, and (5) ensuring evaluation. To tackle these challenges successfully, key policy recommendations are made.

Book excerpt: A funny and uplifting fable about the journey to learn who we are, from the bestselling author of The Yellow World Dani has devoted his life to finding missing children. One day, as his girlfriend starts packing her bags to leave him, he gets a phone call from a distraught father asking for help. It's a strange case, one that Dani wouldn't usually take on. But, when he hears his girlfriend slam the front door, and his apartment falls into silence, he realizes it's one he can't turn down. His journey to find the lost boy takes Dani over the seas to the sleepy Italian island of Capri - a place infused with a kind of hazy magic, which begins to conjure up in Dani's mind long-forgotten memories of his own childhood. And, as he starts to unravel the story of his own life, he realises that he is not just on a quest to save the missing child - he is also on a quest to save himself. Quirky, warm-hearted, and honest, this is an uplifting parable of memory and forgiveness, as a man makes a life-changing journey across an island and into his own heart. Told in simple, emotionally-honest prose, it reveals how, by revisiting the past , we can change the shape of the future.

Book Abortion Law in Transnational Perspective

Download or read book Abortion Law in Transnational Perspective written by Rebecca J. Cook and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly implausible to speak of a purely domestic abortion law, as the legal debates around the world draw on precedents and influences of different national and regional contexts. While the United States and Western Europe may have been the vanguard of abortion law reform in the latter half of the twentieth century, Central and South America are proving to be laboratories of thought and innovation in the twenty-first century, as are particular countries in Africa and Asia. Abortion Law in Transnational Perspective offers a fresh look at significant transnational legal developments in recent years, examining key judicial decisions, constitutional texts, and regulatory reforms of abortion law in order to envision ways ahead. The chapters investigate issues of access, rights, and justice, as well as social constructions of women, sexuality, and pregnancy, through different legal procedures and regimes. They address the promises and risks of using legal procedure to achieve reproductive justice from different national, regional, and international vantage points; how public and courtroom debates are framed within medical, religious, and human rights arguments; the meaning of different narratives that recur in abortion litigation and language; and how respect for women and prenatal life is expressed in various legal regimes. By exploring how legal actors advocate, regulate, and adjudicate the issue of abortion, this timely volume seeks to build on existing developments to bring about change of a larger order. Download or read book Simply Rational written by Gerd Gigerenzer and published by Evolution and Cognition. This book was released on 2015 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical illiteracy can have an enormously negative impact on decision making. This volume of collected papers brings together applied and theoretical research on risks and decision making across the fields of medicine, psychology, and economics. Collectively, the essays demonstrate why the frame in which statistics are communicated is essential for broader understanding and sound decision making, and that understanding risks and uncertainty has wide-reaching implications for daily life. Gerd Gigerenzer provides a lucid review and catalog of concrete instances of heuristics, or rules of thumb, that people and animals rely on to make decisions under uncertainty, explaining why these are very often more rational than probability models. After a critical look at behavioral theories that do not model actual psychological processes, the book concludes with a call for a heuristic revolution that will enable us to understand the ecological rationality of both statistics and heuristics, and bring a dose of sanity to the study of rationality.
