Book Mesoporous Catalysts Supports and Catalytic Membranes Based on MCM 41 Final Report for the Period January 15 2000 January 14 2001

Download or read book Mesoporous Catalysts Supports and Catalytic Membranes Based on MCM 41 Final Report for the Period January 15 2000 January 14 2001 written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research had two objectives: to understand the effect of pore size on the chemistry and activity of active sites, and to investigate both the pore size and anchoring effect of Me-MCM-41 on Pt clusters (where Me is a metal incorporated in silica-based MCM-41). The focus is not on the effect of pore size on transport of reactants and products, but on how the local radius of curvature might affect the properties of a foreign ion embedded in a silicon wall that acts as a catalytic site or anchor for the catalytic site. The mesoporous molecular sieve, MCM-41, allows the variation of pore size with constant composition and pore geometry so these new materials allow this scientific question to be addressed for the first time. For the anchoring effect, concentration was on Sn-MCM-41 to prepare Pt/Sn-MCM-41 catalysts, by characterizing these and by testing them with probe reforming reactions (dehydrogenation, isomerization and aromatization). Although this is a final report on activity January 15, 2000 - January 14, 2001, this was a continuation of work initiated in the three-year grant period January 15, 1997 - January 14, 2000, so the summary of progress for these three years is appended for completeness.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured Carbon Supported Pt based Electrocatalysts

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured Carbon Supported Pt based Electrocatalysts written by Geng, Xi and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Fuel cell, as an alternative green power source for automobiles and portable electronics, has attracted worldwide attention due to its desirable properties such as high energy density and low greenhouse gas emission. Despite great progress in the past decades, several challenges still remain as obstacles for the large-scale commercialization. Among them, the high cost of Pt-based electrode material is considered as a major barrier, while the life span or stability of electrode catalysts is another concern since the electrocatalysts can be easily poisoned during the fuel cell operation. In order to overcome these issues, nanostructured carbon materials, especially carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are studied as catalyst support. In addition, recent research also suggests that the coupling of a second metal element with Pt can effectively protect the electrocatalysts from being poisoned and thus improve their long-term durability. The objective of the present work was to demonstrate an efficient synthetic method for the preparation of CNTs supported binary PtM (M=Ru, Sn) electrocatalysts. In this project, a polymer wrapping technique along with an in-situ polyol reduction strategy was adopted to decorate well-dispersed binary PtM nanoparticles on the surface of modified-CNTs. The unique nanostructures as well as the excellent catalytic activities of the as-prepared nanohybirds were investigated through a diversity of physiochemical and electrochemical characterization techniques. This fabrication method provided a simple and convenient route to assemble Pt-based catalyst on carbon substrates, which is useful for the further development of high-performance fuel cell catalysts.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Pt and Pd Overlayer Catalysts for Aqueous Phase Reforming of Lactose and Hydrodeoygenation of Guaiacol and Anisole

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Pt and Pd Overlayer Catalysts for Aqueous Phase Reforming of Lactose and Hydrodeoygenation of Guaiacol and Anisole written by Qinghua Lai and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supported bimetallic overlayer catalysts, Ni@Pt, Co@Pt, Ni@Pd, and Mo@Pt have been prepared by the directed deposition synthesis technique. The single crystal and computational studies have predicted that formation of Pd or Pt overlayer on Ni, Co or Mo base metal would cause a negative shift of d-band center of surface Pd or Pt, resulting in reduced binding strength for adsorbed species. The hydrogen chemisorption, ethylene hydrogenation descriptor reaction, XRD, H2-TPR, XAS and TEM studies were employed to characterize the catalysts. The alumina supported Ni@Pt and Co@Pt overlayer catalysts have been studied for aqueous phase reforming (APR) of lactose. Silica alumina supported Ni@Pt, Ni@Pd, and Mo@Pt catalysts have been investigated for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin derived bio-oils. The H2 chemisorption and ethylene hydrogenation descriptor showed that alumina supported Ni@Pt and Co@Pt overlayer catalysts had reduced adsorption strength compared to a Pt only catalyst, which agrees with the computational prediction. XAS results showed that overlayer catalysts exhibited higher white line intensity than Pt catalyst, indicating a negative d-band shift for the Pt overlayer. Lactose APR studies showed that lactose could be used as feedstock to produce H2 and CO under desirable reaction condition. The Pt active sites of alumina supported Ni@Pt and Co@Pt overlayer catalysts showed significantly enhanced H2 production selectivity and activity when compared with that of a Pt only catalyst. The single deposition overlayer with the largest d-band shift showed the highest H2 activity. Silica alumina supported Ni@Pd, Ni@Pt, and Mo@Pt overlayer catalysts also showed the reduced adsorption strength compared to the Pd or Pt only catalyst. The TEM images of Ni@Pd overlayer catalyst provided evidence for a core/shell type structure. The H2-TPR results demonstrated the close interaction between Pt and Mo species for Mo@Pt overlayer catalysts. Guaiacol and anisole hydrodeoxygenation results showed that Pd and Pt active sites of overlayer catalysts showed significantly enhanced deoxygenation activity compared with that of Pd or Pt only catalyst. Further studies showed that guaiacol and anisole could be completely deoxygenated over the silica alumina supported metal catalysts at high W/F, yielding benzene, toluene, and xylenes as major products.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Platinum based Multi component Catalysts for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Platinum based Multi component Catalysts for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells written by Li Ren and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the thesis work, Pt-based binary, ternary, quaternary alloy anode catalysts supported on sonochemically treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized with ethylene glycol reduction of corresponding metal chloride salts. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for catalyst characterization. Cyclic voltammetry for methanol oxidation and CO stripping were used to evaluate the performance of the catalysts. PtRu nanoparticles supported on CNTs (PtRu/CNT) were prepared under a series of pHs. It was found that the PtRu particle size, composition, and catalytic activity were all sensitive to the deposition pHs. CO stripping results provided the peak potential and active surface area for each catalyst. The atomic ratios tended to approach the predetermined ratio 1:1 with the increase of pH, which is favored by bi-functional catalytic mechanism. PtRu catalysts prepared at higher pHs presented better electrochemical activity toward methanol oxidation. Humidified oxygen treatment of the PtRu/CNT led to improved activity of the catalysts toward methanol electro-oxidation, implying that Ru hydroxide is better than Ru as a co-catalyst. PtRu, PtOs, PtRuOs, and PtRuOsIr nanoparticles supported on CNTs with atomic ratios of Pt:Ru (tr:46), Pt:Os (80:20), Pt:Ru:Os (54:36:10), and Pt:Ru:Os:Ir (44:36:10:5) were prepared. Cyclic voltammetry for the methanol oxidation and CO stripping at the catalysts showed that PtRu/CNT and PtRuOsIr/CNT have the best performance toward methanol oxidation, PtRuOs/CNT has the lowest activity, but PtOs/CNT exhibits better catalytic activity only at potential or 0.73 V"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Nanostructured Materials for Next Generation Energy Storage and Conversion

Download or read book Nanostructured Materials for Next Generation Energy Storage and Conversion written by Ying-Pin Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of a 4-volume series is a concise, authoritative and an eminently readable and enjoyable experience related to hydrogen production, storage and usage for portable and stationary power. Although the major focus is on hydrogen, discussion of fossil fuels and nuclear power is also presented where appropriate. This monograph is written by recognized experts in the field, and is both timely and appropriate as this decade will see application of hydrogen as an energy carrier, for example in transportation sector. The world's reliance on fossil fuels is due to the ever growing need for energy to sustain life and on-going progress; however exploitation also brings consequences such as emission of carbon, nitrogen and sulfur dioxides into the atmosphere. The collective influence of these photochemical gases is production of acid rain and an alternation of global temperatures, leading to record high temperatures in many parts of the world. The fossil fuel is unsustainable and thus there is a critical need for alternative sustainable energy resources. One universal energy carrier is hydrogen, which is the focus of this volume. This book is suitable for those who work in the energy field as technical experts, including engineers and scientists, as well as managers, policy and decision-makers, environmentalists and consultants. Students and practitioners such as lectures, teachers, legislators and their aids in the field of energy will find this book invaluable and a practical handbook or guide in the field of sustainable energy with emphasis on hydrogen as an energy carrier.
