Book Differential Equations from the Algebraic Standpoint

Download or read book Differential Equations from the Algebraic Standpoint written by Joseph Fels Ritt and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1932-12-31 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book can be viewed as a first attempt to systematically develop an algebraic theory of nonlinear differential equations, both ordinary and partial. The main goal of the author was to construct a theory of elimination, which ``will reduce the existence problem for a finite or infinite system of algebraic differential equations to the application of the implicit function theorem taken with Cauchy's theorem in the ordinary case and Riquier's in the partial.'' In his 1934 review of the book, J. M. Thomas called it ``concise, readable, original, precise, and stimulating'', and his words still remain true. A more fundamental and complete account of further developments of the algebraic approach to differential equations is given in Ritt's treatise Differential Algebra, written almost 20 years after the present work (Colloquium Publications, Vol. 33, American Mathematical Society, 1950).

Book Pioneering Women in American Mathematics

Download or read book Pioneering Women in American Mathematics written by Judy Green and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned PhD's in mathematics before 1940, and collected extensive biographical and bibliographical information about each of them. By reconstructing as complete a picture as possible of this group of women, Green and LaDuke reveal insights into the larger scientific and cultural communities in which they lived and worked." "The book contains an extended introductory essay, as well as biographical entries for each of the 228 women in the study. The authors examine family backgrounds, education, careers, and other professional activities. They show that there were many more women earning PhD's in mathematics before 1940 than is commonly thought." "The material will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in mathematics, history of mathematics, history of science, women's studies, and sociology."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Mathematics Into Type

Download or read book Mathematics Into Type written by Ellen Swanson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition, updated by Arlene O'Sean and Antoinette Schleyer of the American Mathematical Society, brings Ms. Swanson's work up to date, reflecting the more technical reality of publishing today. While it includes information for copy editors, proofreaders, and production staff to do a thorough, traditional copyediting and proofreading of a manuscript and proof copy, it is increasingly more useful to authors, who have become intricately involved with the typesetting of their manuscripts.

Book The Asymptotic and Oscillatory Behaviour of Difference and Differential Equations

Download or read book The Asymptotic and Oscillatory Behaviour of Difference and Differential Equations written by Shuhui Wu and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2009 in the subject Mathematics - Applied Mathematics, London Metropolitan University, language: English, abstract: This thesis deals with the asymptotic and oscillatory behaviour of the solutions of certain differential and difference equations. It mainly consists of three parts. The first part is to study the asymptotic behaviour of certain differential equations. The second part is to look for oscillatory criteria for certain nonlinear neutral differential equations. And the third part is to establish new criteria for a class of nonlinear neutral difference equations of any order with continuous variable and another type of higher even order nonlinear neutral difference equations to be oscillatory. A functional differential equation is a differential equation involving the values of the unknown functions at present, as well as at past or future time. The word "time" here stands for the independent variable. In the thesis, the concept of a functional differential equation is confined to ordinary differential equations, although it suits partial ones as well. Functional differential equations can be classified into four types according to their deviations: retarded, advanced, neutral and mixed. A neutral equation is one in which derivative of functionals of the past history and the present state are involved, but no future states occur in the equation. The order of a differential equation is the order of the highest derivative of the unknown function. A difference equation is a specific type of recurrence relation, which is an equation that defines a sequence recursively: each term of the sequence is defined as a function of the preceding terms. On the other hand, difference equations can be thought of as the discrete analogue of the corresponding differential equations. By analogy with differential equations, difference equations also can be classified into four types: delay, advanced, neutral, and mixed. The or

Book Lectures on Analytic Differential Equations

Download or read book Lectures on Analytic Differential Equations written by I︠U︡. S. Ilʹi︠a︡shenko and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book combines the features of a graduate-level textbook with those of a research monograph and survey of the recent results on analysis and geometry of differential equations in the real and complex domain. As a graduate textbook, it includes self-contained, sometimes considerably simplified demonstrations of several fundamental results, which previously appeared only in journal publications (desingularization of planar analytic vector fields, existence of analytic separatrices, positive and negative results on the Riemann-Hilbert problem, Ecalle-Voronin and Martinet-Ramis moduli, solution of the Poincare problem on the degree of an algebraic separatrix, etc.). As a research monograph, it explores in a systematic way the algebraic decidability of local classification problems, rigidity of holomorphic foliations, etc. Each section ends with a collection of problems, partly intended to help the reader to gain understanding and experience with the material, partly drafting demonstrations of the mor The exposition of the book is mostly geometric, though the algebraic side of the constructions is also prominently featured. on several occasions the reader is introduced to adjacent areas, such as intersection theory for divisors on the projective plane or geometric theory of holomorphic vector bundles with meromorphic connections. The book provides the reader with the principal tools of the modern theory of analytic differential equations and intends to serve as a standard source for references in this area.
