Book excerpt: AN ECONOMIST BOOK OF THE YEAR Humanity's embrace of openness is the key to our success. The freedom to explore and exchange - whether it's goods, ideas or people - has led to stunning achievements in science, technology and culture. As a result, we live at a time of unprecedented wealth and opportunity. So why are we so intent on ruining it? From Stone Age hunter-gatherers to contemporary Chinese-American relations, Open explores how across time and cultures, we have struggled with a constant tension between our yearning for co-operation and our profound need for belonging. Providing a bold new framework for understanding human history, bestselling author and thinker Johan Norberg examines why we're often uncomfortable with openness - but also why it is essential for progress. Part sweeping history and part polemic, this urgent book makes a compelling case for why an open world with an open economy is worth fighting for more than ever.

Book Information Systems Development and Data Modeling

Download or read book Information Systems Development and Data Modeling written by Rudy Hirschheim and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-10-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information systems development is not merely a technical intervention but involves social and ethical dilemmas that affect the human, social and organizational domains. To demonstrate this point, the authors conduct a thorough and substantive description and analysis of the conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of systems development. In particular they analyse a number of systems development methodologies including structured methods, prototyping, ETHICS and Soft Systems Methodology to reveal the underlying conceptual and philosophical foundations. The book provides an in-depth analysis of data modelling theory and its links with theories of language and cognition. It offers a framework to describe and analyse different systems development approaches and to explain their strengths and weaknesses. The book is aimed at graduate students taking courses in information systems and data modelling, but will also appeal to information systems managers and professionals for whom the summary of methodologies will be useful.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of the ISD'97, Sixth International Conference on Information Systems Development-Methods and Tools, Theory and Practice held August 11-14, 1997 in Boise, Idaho, USA. The purpose of this Conference was to address the issues facing academia and industry when specifying, developing, managing and improving software systems. The selection of papers was carried out by the International Program Committee. All papers were reviewed in advance by at least three people. Papers were judged according to their originality, relevance and presentation quality. All papers were judged purely on their own merits, independently of other submissions. This year's Information Systems Development Conference-ISD'97 is the first ISD conference being held in the US. ISD was brought into existence almost ten years ago. It continues the fine tradition of the first Polish-Scandinavian Seminar on Current Trends in Information Systems Development Methodologies, held in Gdansk-Poland in 1988. ISD'98 will be held in Bled, Slovenia. ISD'97 consists not only of the technical program represented in these proceedings, but also tutorials on improved software testing and end-user information systems and workshop on sharing knowledge within international high technology industries that are intended for both, the research and business communities. We would like to thank the authors of papers accepted for ISD'97 who all made gal lant efforts to provide me with electronic copies of their manuscripts conforming to com mon guidelines. We thank them for thoughtfully responding to reviewers comments and carefully preparing their final contributions.

Book excerpt: Systems: Concepts, Methodologies and Applications Second Edition Brian Wilson Department of Systems and Information Management Lancaster University, UK The result of many years' experience, this book, now extensively revised and updated, emphasizes the application of systems concepts and methodologies that have been developed at Lancaster University. In particular the book is about problem solving and the relationship between theory and practice. Complementary to Systems Thinking, Systems Practice by Peter Checkland (Wiley, 1981), which has become a classic in the field, this book shows how systems ideas can be used to cope with real-life problems. Reviews of the first edition-- ... an excellent book which provides a synthesis of the action-research undertaken by the well-known Department of Systems, University of Lancaster ... Wilson's lucid style of writing and the historical perspective of the Lancaster learning experience provide a strong contextural case for the concept of a human activity system to investigate 'badly-defined' [Checkland's 'soft'] systems. Chris Beaumont, Journal of the Operational Research Society, January 1985 ... This volume, expertly compiled by Brian Wilson, is the latest and probably the clearest statement in book form of the philosophy of that department [Department of Systems, University of Lancaster] ... a volume which deserves to be read ... E. R. Carson, Kybernetes, 12, 1985 ... Systems: Concepts, Methodologies and Applications is Wilson's account of his professional life at Lancaster since then (1966). His careful reflection on the work of so many years deserves attention. Trevor Williams, Futures, December 1985

Book Human Benefit through the Diffusion of Information Systems Design Science Research

Download or read book Human Benefit through the Diffusion of Information Systems Design Science Research written by Jan Pries-Heje and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of the 2010 Joint International Working C- ference of the International Federation for Information Processing Working Groups 8.2 and 8.6. Both working groups are part of IFIP Technical Committee 8, the tech- cal committee addressing the field of Information Systems. IFIP WG 8.2, the Inter- tion of Information Systems and Organizations, was established in 1977. IFIP WG 8.6, Diffusion, Transfer and Implementation of Information Technology, was est- lished in 1994. In accordance with their respective themes, both IFIP WG 8.2 and IFIP WG 8.6 have long had an interest in the human impact of information systems. In December 1998, they held a joint working conference in Helsinki, Finland, on the theme “Inf- mation Systems: Current Issues and Future Challenges.” The two working groups’ joint interest in and collaboration on research concerning the human side of IS is c- tinued and extended through this joint working conference, held on the campus of Curtin University of Technology, from March 30 to April 1, 2010, in Perth, Western Australia. This conference, “Human Benefit Through the Diffusion of Information Systems Design Science Research,” combines the traditional themes of the two working groups with the growing interest within the IS research field in the area of design science research.

Book Security Management Integrity and Internal Control in Information Systems

Download or read book Security Management Integrity and Internal Control in Information Systems written by Steve Furnell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-06-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first joint working conference between the IFIP Working Groups 11. 1 and 11. 5. We hope this joint conference will promote collaboration among researchers who focus on the security management issues and those who are interested in integrity and control of information systems. Indeed, as management at any level may be increasingly held answerable for the reliable and secure operation of the information systems and services in their respective organizations in the same manner as they are for financial aspects of the enterprise, there is an increasing need for ensuring proper standards of integrity and control in information systems in order to ensure that data, software and, ultimately, the business processes are complete, adequate and valid for intended functionality and expectations of the owner (i. e. the user organization). As organizers, we would like to thank the members of the international program committee for their review work during the paper selection process. We would also like to thank the authors of the invited papers, who added valuable contribution to this first joint working conference. Paul Dowland X. Book A Theory of Computer Semiotics

Download or read book A Theory of Computer Semiotics written by Peter Bøgh Andersen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-28 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiotics is the science of signs: graphical, such as pictures; verbal (writing or sounds); or others such as body gestures and clothes. Computer semiotics studies the special nature of computer-based signs and how they function in use. This 1991 book is based on ten years of empirical research on computer usage in work situations and contains material from a course taught by the author. It introduces basic traditional semiotic concepts and adapts them so that they become useful for analysing and designing computer systems in their symbolic context of work. It presents a novel approach to the subject, rich in examples, in that it is both theoretically systematic and practical. The author refers to and reinterprets techniques already used so that readers can deepen their understanding. In addition, it offers new techniques and a consistent perspective on computer systems that is particularly appropriate for new hardware and software (e.g. hypermedia) whose main functions are presentation and communication. This is a highly important work whose influence will be wide and longlasting.

Book Development and the Arts

Download or read book Development and the Arts written by Margery B. Franklin and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume's unifying theme is the question: Is a concept of development relevant to art? Bringing together contributions from the perspectives of philosophical aesthetics, psychoanalysis, architecture and design, and the practicing artist, as well as developmental theory in psychology, this volume provides a unique assembly of voices from different disciplines. The twelve chapters span artistic production in childhood, transformations in the work of the individual artist, and historical changes in art, thus establishing a broad canvas for examining how concepts of development are used in relation to the arts. The contributors consider specific phenomena and questions against the background of theoretical issues, taking markedly different views on whether change in artistic work can be aptly characterized as development and, if so, what modulations of the concept may be required in light of accompanying assumptions and implications. Given the nature of this discourse, this richly illustrated book should lead to a radical rethinking among those who apply developmental concepts to artistic phenomena and aesthetic movements, and to reconsideration of the role of art in optimal human development within the individual and within social orders.

Book Organizational and Social Perspectives on Information Technology

Download or read book Organizational and Social Perspectives on Information Technology written by Richard Baskerville and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this book constitute the proceedings papers from the IFIP WG 8.2 Working Conference, "IS2000: The Social and Organizational Perspective on Research and Practice in Information Technology," held June 1 0-12, 2000, in Aalborg, Denmark. The focus of the conference, and therefore this book, is on the basic aim of the working group, namely, the investigation of the interrelationships among four major components: information systems (IS), information technology (IT), organizations, and society. This basic social and organizational perspective on research and practice in information technology may have evolved substantially since the founding ofthe group, for example, increasing the emphasis on IS development. The plan for the conference was partially rooted in the early WG 8.2 traditions, in which working conferences were substantially composed of invited papers. For IS2000, roughly half of the paper presentations were planned to be invited; the remaining half were planned to be double-blind refereed in response to a "Call For Papers." Invited papers were single-blind reviewed in order to provide the authors with pre-publication feedback and comments, along with the opportunity to revise their papers prior to its final incorporation in this book.
