This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ivane Beritashvili Center of Experimental Biomedicine was established in 2010 on the basis of the well-known Ivane Beritashvili Institute of Physiology, the most prominent research center of Georgia, where basic and applied research in different fields of neurophysiology has been conducted since its foundation.Professor Ivane Beritashvili was a famous Georgian scientist who gained international recognition during his lifetime. He was one of the founders and members of the Georgian Academy of Sciences and a member of three academies of sciences of the former Soviet Union. He was an honorary member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Society of Electroencephalography, the Royal Society of England, the American Society of Biological Psychiatry, and an honorary member of the International Brain Research Organization. He was an honored scientist of Georgia, a laureate of the State Prize, and a recipient of many orders and medals.Ivane Beritashvili is remembered in history as a person who founded the Department of Physiology at the newly opened Tbilisi State University. He developed physiological terminology in Georgian, wrote a textbook of physiology in Georgian for the students of the university, raised successful scientists from the first generation of his students, and founded the Georgian School of Physiology. In 1935, he founded the Institute of Physiology in Tbilisi, which soon gained recognition and became well-respected by a wide range of foreign scientists who often visited Georgia. In 2010, three scientific institutions were merged with the Ivane Beritashvili Institute of Physiology - the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics, the Center of Radiobiology and Radiation Ecology and the Center of Experimental Neurology, the first two of which, for many years, were the departments of the Institute of Physiology. This edited book is the third such compilation containing chapters that represent the research priorities of the Ivane Beritashvili Center of Experimental Biomedicine, which covers the experimental study of fundamental issues in the functioning of physiological (mainly neurophysiological) mechanisms during normal and pathological conditions. The first and second books - "Systemic, Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Physiological Functions and Their Disorders" - published by Nova Science Publishers Inc. in 2015 and 2018, were also devoted to the same general problems. In the present edited book, particular attention is drawn to the study of extremely important processes underlying the basic mechanisms and disorders of various phenomenon of integrative activity of the brain: general behavior, learning and memory, the sleep-wakefulness cycle, regulation of adequate blood supply, hormesis, epilepsy, depression, sleep disorders, pain and analgesia. All of the mentioned processes are studied on the molecular, cellular and systemic levels of their organization. It has to be noted that each chapter, within the collection of works, represents the results of separate, independent studies implemented by different scientific departments of the center. Therefore, the chapters are not directly related to each other and have been arranged alphabetically based on the surname of the authors. The authors would like to take this opportunity to present to the reader the scientific and institutional infrastructure of the center, which consists of departments and laboratories. Nowadays the center consists of seven departments: Neurophysiology, Membranology, Biochemistry, Blood Circulation and Metabolism, Neurotoxicology, Membranology, Biophysics and Radiobiology and nine laboratories: Neurobiology of Sleep-Wakefulness Cycle, Vision Physiology, Behavior and Cognitive Functions, Brain Ultra- and Nano-Architectonics, Experimental Neurology, Pain and Analgesia, Structure and Functions of Genomes, Bioinformatics, and the Problems of Radiation Safety. In addition to the bilateral scientific cooperation with famous European and U.S. scientific institutions, the center is a member of the International Science Consortium "From Molecule to Cellular Events in Human Pathologies", the annual meeting of which was held in Tbilisi in 2015.The authors are confident that the readers are fully aware of the theoretical and practical importance of the research related to the problems of systemic, cellular and molecular mechanisms of physiological functions and their disorders. The presented collection of works contains the results of relevant research conducted over the last three years (2019-2021).The authors will be grateful for feedback, recommendations and suggestions regarding their research, in the implementation of which they have invested a lot of effort, knowledge and experience.

Download or read book Auditory Neuroscience written by Jan Schnupp and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated overview of hearing and the interplay of physical, biological, and psychological processes underlying it. Every time we listen—to speech, to music, to footsteps approaching or retreating—our auditory perception is the result of a long chain of diverse and intricate processes that unfold within the source of the sound itself, in the air, in our ears, and, most of all, in our brains. Hearing is an "everyday miracle" that, despite its staggering complexity, seems effortless. This book offers an integrated account of hearing in terms of the neural processes that take place in different parts of the auditory system. Because hearing results from the interplay of so many physical, biological, and psychological processes, the book pulls together the different aspects of hearing—including acoustics, the mathematics of signal processing, the physiology of the ear and central auditory pathways, psychoacoustics, speech, and music—into a coherent whole.

Book Electrochemical Process Engineering

Download or read book Electrochemical Process Engineering written by F. Goodridge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the subtitle indicates, the overriding intention of the authors has been to provide a practical guide to the design of electrolytic plant. We wanted to show that the procedures for the design and optimization of such a plant are essentially simple and can be performed by readers comparatively new to the electrochemical field. It was important to realize that electrochemical engineering should not be confused with applied electrochemistry but had to be based on the principles of chemical engineering. For this reason, reference is often made to standard chemical engineering texts. Since this is a practical guide rather than a textbook, we have included a large number of worked examples on the principle that a good worked example is worth many paragraphs of text. In some examples we have quoted costs, e.g., of chemicals, plant or services. These costs are merely illustrative; current values will have to be obtained from manufacturers or journals. If this is not possible, approximate methods are available for updating costs to present-day values (see Refs. 1 and 3, Chapter 6).

Book Dementia Diabetes and Hypertension

Download or read book Dementia Diabetes and Hypertension written by Leandro Bueno Bergantin and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dementia, diabetes, and hypertension are considered huge medical problems around the world, costing many millions of dollars to the medical health systems. Curiously, hypertension has been clinically linked with a higher risk for decline of cognition, as shown in dementia patients. In addition, there is a clear clinical association between hypertension and diabetes, reflecting substantial similarities in their etiology. In fact, consistent data support that patients diagnosed with diabetes have shown an increased risk of presenting cognitive dysfunctions, clinical signs of dementia. Considering the cumulative knowledge from the scientific literature, we can now link Ca2+ signals dysregulations as an upstream issue for hypertension, diabetes and other inflammatory processes, and dementia. Regarding therapeutics, hypertensive patients have been classically treated with Ca2+ channel blockers (CCBs), medicines whose mechanism of action consists in reducing the influx of Ca2+ into the cells. Intriguingly, many clinical reports have been demonstrating off-label effects for CCBs. In hypertensive patients treated with CCBs, it can be observed a lower incidence of dementia such as Alzheimer's disease. The possible mechanism of action could be attributed to a restoration of the Ca2+ homeostasis. In addition, in hypertensive patients treated with CCBs, it can be also observed an improvement of diabetes status such as glycemic control. A possible mechanism of action could be due to a restoration of insulin secretion, then achieving glycemic control, and a reduction of the pancreatic [beta]-cell apoptosis. Thus, this book puts together fundamental concepts, and current therapies to treat dementia, hypertension, and diabetes, including novel therapeutics coming from the pharmacological manipulation of Ca2+/cAMP signalling. Finally, this book compiles more than 300 references from the scientific literature, including data of high evidence such as meta-analysis and systematic reviews, and discusses pharmaceuticals already approved and clinically safe, e.g., CCBs, then allowing sustained increments in the life quality of age-related patients"--

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Anthropometry written by Sébastien Legrand and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Anthropometry: Types, Uses and Applications, the science of anthropometry, which deals with measurements of human size, shape and proportion, is examined in the context of obesity and overweight, common problems in developed countries and developing countries alike. An estimated 39% of the world's adult population were overweight and 13% were obese over the past 3 decades, and these problems can cause diseases like type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and several cancers. While body mass index (BMI) is commonly used as a health risk phenotype, it has several limitations because BMI does not accurately depict different components of body composition and is therefore unable to predict the prognostic effect of individual tissues. Other anthropometric measurements, such as waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR), and waist to height ratio (WHtR) each have their advantages and disadvantages. As such, in Chapter 1, different novel anthropometric parameters and cardiovascular risk factors among obesity adults are compared and evaluated. Chapter 2 describes a study of children aged 0-12 years conducted in the Middle Senegal River Valley (MISOES) in 1957-1958. This study was based on representative samples of children in urban and rural areas and included measurements of weight, height, arm circumference, and more. These measurements were compared with American standards and showed an overwhelming anthropometric deficit compared with standards. This study is examined in the context of other studies conducted in the region as well as in connection with economic development in the valley. Chapter 3 describes the various methods of assessing body fat and their application for obese individuals to predict the risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), and Chapter 4 reviews the effect of different modalities of physical exercise on anthropometric measurements and body composition in different populations of older adults"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarises the state of cognoscibility with regard to normal new-born care that has accumulated over the past centuries, especially the 20th and now 21st century. This compendium is not an ersatz discussion of neonatology, but of the fascinating zone that involves the new-born in the normal new-born nursery. It is not a homogenous area and thus, some overlap is inevitable in such a compilation of data. The preface details historical concepts that have followed new-borns over the millennia of homo sapiens' existence, such as infanticide, breast feeding, swaddling, neonatal resuscitation, and principles of caring for new-borns. The mortality rate of new-borns has been reduced in many parts of the world in this century and we have learned much more about how to keep increasing numbers of new-borns alive, especially when health care providers and society collaborate in this important endeavour and emphasise known preventative principles. Current modern paediatric and perinatal treatments allow new-borns in the current 21st century America to have a start on an overall life expectancy of 78.5 years (up to 76 years in males and 80.9 years in females), if they receive meticulous medical care even if born into a penurious state. Such deserved care and inevitable ongoing medical discoveries will only lengthen these life trajectories.
