Book Systematics Variation and Zoogeography of Two North American Cyprinid Fishes

Download or read book Systematics Variation and Zoogeography of Two North American Cyprinid Fishes written by Alan W. Wells and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systematics, geographic variation, and postglacial dispersal patterns are examined in Hybognathus hankinsoni (brassy minnow) and Couesius £l u mbe us (lake chub)• Morphological differences between Missouri River basin and Great Lakes basin H. ha n k ins oni were discovered. Northern Alberta and British Columbia populations most closely resemble those from the Great Lakes region. It is postulated that the Missouri form originated in 'he "Preglacial Plains Stream" and survived glaciation in the Missouri basin. The form presently found in the Great Lakes region most likely originated in the pre-Pleistocene Laurentian River system and/or Missouri River system and survived glaciation in the upper Mississippi basin. Dispersal into northern Alberta and British Columbia was probably via Campbell phase Lake Agassiz and glacial Lake Peace. Taxonomic recognition of the two forms does not seem warranted. Existence of three morphological forms of C. plumbeus is confirmed - an upper Columbia River basin "greeni", a Missouri basin "dissimilis", and an eastern and Great Lakes "plumbeus". All three forms intergrade extensively throughout the northwest portion of the geographic range, while in the Lake Superior region "dissimilis" and "plumbeus" seem to be good biological species. Morphological differences between the "dissimilis" and "pluabeus" forms appear related to ecological differences. The "greeni 1 ' form most likely originated in the Columbia River basin, while the "dissimilis" form probably originated in the Missouri River basin. The "plumbeus" form may have originated in the pre-Pleistocene Laurentian River system and survived glaciation in an eastern lower Great Lakes refugium. Phenetic and cladistic analyses suggest that the genus Couesius is most closely related to the nominal genus Margari neus and it is suggested that they be combined into a single genus, Couesius. Proposals to unite Couesius with Hy bopsis or Sesotilus are not supported. Evidence indicating possible hybridization between Couesius olu mbe us and Semotilus (Xargariscus) sarcrarita is presented.

Book Cyprinid Fishes

Download or read book Cyprinid Fishes written by Ian J. Winfield and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cyprinidae is one of the two largest families of vertebrates in the world. This book draws together the experience of more than 30 international experts to provide the first comprehensive account of the biology of this family. The book is divided broadly into three sections. First, the origins and present day geographical distributions of these fishes are discussed in the light of recent research. This is followed by detailed accounts of cyprinid biology, in terms of feeding, physiology, reproduction and behaviour. The final chapters of the book cover the cyprinids' considerable applied importance with respect to environmental management, fisheries and aquaculture. As this family is extremely important as forage fish for other animals, as food fish for humans and are commonly used as models in experimental work, the book will be of great interest to all those with an interest in freshwater fish, fish ecology, fisheries biology and aquaculture systems.

Book The Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes

Download or read book The Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes written by Charles H. Hocutt and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1986-04-30 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes is a timely, authoritative monograph which serves a twofold purpose. First, it discusses the distribution of North American freshwater fish throughout the continent. It then attempts to explain these observed distribution patterns and develops a theory for the dispersal and evolution of these fishes through historical drainage alterations, plate tectonics, and Pleistoscene glaciation. The Zoogeography of North American Freshwater Fishes is a comprehensive treatment of the freshwater biogeography of North America, with implications for other disciplines. It stresses the intimate relationship between geological changes in the landscape on fish dispersal and evolution. For biologists, geologists, and geographers actively involved in biogeography, this book serves as a valuable-and practical-reference.

Book excerpt: This manual for the identification of larval fishes of the Great Lakes basin with emphasis on the Lake Michigan drainage treats 24 families and 148 species. In addition to a key to the families, keys were constructed for selected species within some families. Species accounts include descriptions of adult ecology, reproductive biology, diagnostic characters and meristics. A description of the egg is given, as are morphometric, morphological and pigmentation characteristics of yolk-sac larvae, larvae and juveniles. Illustrations of yolk-sac larvae, larvae and juveniles have been included wherever possible and informative.

Book Fishes in the Freshwaters of Florida

Download or read book Fishes in the Freshwaters of Florida written by Robert H. Robins and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive identification guide to the 222 species of fishes in Florida’s fresh waters. Each species is presented with color photographs, key characteristics for identification, comparisons to similar species, habitat descriptions, and dot distribution maps. Florida's unique mix of species includes some of the world's favorite sport fishes, the Tarpon and Largemouth Bass. This guide also features three species native only to Florida—the Seminole Killifish, Flagfish, and Okaloosa Darter—and the smallest freshwater fish in North America, the Least Killifish. Ranging from the panhandle to the Everglades, their habitats include springs, creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, marshes, and man-made canals. As Florida's human population grows, the state's freshwater environments are being changed in ways that threaten its native fishes. This book provides important information on the diversity, distribution, and environmental needs of both native and nonindigenous species, helping us monitor and take care of Florida's water and its aquatic inhabitants.

Book Biodiversity of Freshwater Ecosystems

Download or read book Biodiversity of Freshwater Ecosystems written by Suhaib A. Bandh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-22 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume examines the ecological importance, threats, protection, and management of the biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems, such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, reservoirs, pools, and wetlands. As populations have been increasing exponentially, humans are using freshwater ecosystems severely, resulting in habitat destruction and breakdown. Environmental contamination, climate change, the introduction of harmful and invasive organisms, unplanned dredging and de-weeding processes, disposal of sewer systems in freshwater bodies, and badly planned water diversions are the leading causes of habitat loss in freshwaters. These impacts have led to significant decreases in the numbers and productivity of many freshwater species and decreased biodiversity in freshwater. This book presents a selection of primary research and review papers on several freshwater aquatic biodiversity studies, which involve evaluating plants, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, benthic zones, and fish diversity in freshwater ecosystems. It provides an abundance of new information on freshwater biodiversity distribution, status, and patterns. Key features: Discusses the importance, threats, and management of biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems Provides detailed coverage of modern and updated techniques used in the evaluation and conservation of freshwater biodiversity Looks at the impact of pesticides pollution on freshwater environs, and on aquatic and terrestrial life Reviews how global climate change affects freshwater biodiversity Biodiversity of Freshwater Ecosystems: Threats, Protection, and Management promotes the enhancement and strengthening of freshwater protection and its unique biodiversity for scientists, policymakers, scholars, researchers, NGOs, and the public, providing necessary background knowledge and practical tools to help manage aquatic ecosystems and their biodiversity in a holistic manner.
