Download or read book The Flowering Plants Handbook written by James W. Byng and published by Plant Gateway Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plant book aims to help identify flowering plants to genus and family level anywhere in the world. In 2014 there were very few available works which were both comprehensive and up-to-date for all the flowering plants families and genera of the world. The Flowering Plants Handbook is an easy to use identification guide to the worlds flowering plants designed for both specialists and non-specialists and from beginner to expert. The book contains descriptions of all currently recognised flowering plant families, morphological notes for 6656 genera (all current genera for 398/413 families) and over 3000 images and illustrations. Flowering plants can be identified using the book to family and much of the world's generic diversity in four 'easy' steps. Some plants will be identified correctly quickly, whilst others may require some retracing of steps and take a little more time. The advantage of this book is that it helps the user learn about the classification system and plant diversity during the identification process. This work was compiled and developed using the living, library and herbarium collections at the University of Aberdeen, Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Download or read book Vascular Plants and Paleobotany written by Philip Stewart and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title includes a number of Open Access chapters. This book provides an important collection of new research that sheds light on many aspects of the evolutionary patterns of gymnosperms, angiosperms, and pteridophtes. The book includes a complete chloroplast genome sequence study and describes a method that induces the systemic silencing of target genes in the Ceratopteris gametophyte. It presents a study of how herbicide treatments reduce fern densities and create the establishment of regeneration. It also analyzes an EST dataset from G. biloba that reveals genes potentially unique to gymnosperms and includes a study of episodic rate acceleration in the ancestral grasses.

Each contributor is involved in the European Plant LIBRA project, and the chapters summarize the results of the project while integrating further research on botanical supplements. With its focus on the epidemiology, risk assessment and evidence based approaches, this text presents a unique and comprehensive overview of botanical food supplements, from their production and chemistry to their side effects and regulatory aspects. Food Supplements Containing Botanicals: Benefits, Side Effects and Regulatory Aspects begins by outlining the general aspects of food supplements, before examining quality and risk assessment of food supplements with botanicals. The following chapters focus on sources, models and human studies which support health claims for these supplements, followed by chapters outlining side effects and potential causes for concern. The issue of increasing consumer expectations is also explored, with methods for meeting these expectations provided. In presenting this well-rounded and up-to-date collection of information on botanical supplements, this book is of great importance to food industry professionals working with botanical supplements.

Download or read book Ecology of Lianas written by Stefan Schnitzer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lianas are woody vines that were the focus of intense study by early ecologists, such as Darwin, who devoted an entire book to the natural history of climbing plants. Over the past quarter century, there has been a resurgence in the study of lianas, and liana are again recognized as important components of many forests, particularly in the tropics. The increasing amount of research on lianas has resulted in a fundamentally deeper understanding of liana ecology, evolution, and life-history, as well as the myriad roles lianas play in forest dynamics and functioning. This book provides insight into the ecology and evolution of lianas, their anatomy, physiology, and natural history, their global abundance and distribution, and their wide-ranging effects on the myriad organisms that inhabit tropical and temperate forests.
Download or read book Vegetation Structure and Function at Multiple Spatial Temporal and Conceptual Scales written by Elgene Owen Box and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commemorative volume of invited papers in vegetation science covers a full range of topics, objectives, methods and applications, including conservation and management tasks. These require study at different temporal and spatial scales, often simultaneously. Methodology is important in science, since it responds to particular questions and raises others. It is also closely related to the scale of investigation. Chapters in this book illustrate this interdependence, even in basic tasks such as vegetation sampling and description, measurements and mapping. Individual chapters present globally applicable systems, regional syntheses and local analyses and applications, plus conceptual methodologies, including currently debated hot topics. Vegetation types treated include tropical rainforests, temperate forests, dry steppes and scrub and local turf, sedge and moss communities. There are also chapters on re-vegetation, woodlot management, ecology of an invasive species, and trajectory planning in conservation. This book will be useful to both students and practitioners, for its reviews and examples and as a potential textbook suitable for graduate-level courses and seminars.
