Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now twelve years since Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents appeared. Since the publication of that monograph the subject has expanded rapidly as the unique potential of surfactants has become known to a wider circle of scientists. In a recent review Menger (Accounts of Chemical Research, 12 (1979) 111) estimated that since 1970 there have been over 2800 publications on micelles and micellization alone. The topic of catalysis in micellar media was in an early stage of development in 1968 but the growth in this subject has given rise to an excellent textbook by Fendler and Fendler. We have felt for some time that a revision of Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents was overdue. The book has been out of print for some time. Owing to pressure of other work, Professor P. H. Elworthy and Dr C. B. Macfarlane were unable to undertake the work of revision but while working together on an undergraduate textbook the present authors decided to set to work, realizing both the impossibility of producing a comprehensive textbook and the need to alter the scope of the book. Micellar solubilization occurs over a relatively small surfactant concentration range; because of this and because the phenomenon is never observed in isolation, we have extended the text to include surface activity, emulsions and suspensions and, as our emphasis is on formulation of medicinal products, to the of the toxicology of surface-active agents.

Book Surface Active Chemicals

Download or read book Surface Active Chemicals written by H. E. Garrett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Active Chemicals resents a number of applications of surface activity. This book provides a discussion of bulk solution phase properties, which is important for proper understanding of surface phenomena. Organized into seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the works of cohesion of some organic liquids and their woks of adhesion to water. This text then describes the properties of ordinary soaps, which consist of blends of alkali–metal or organic base salts of fatty acids of from eight to eighteen carbon atoms. Other chapters consider the characteristic of soapy lather by the addition of excess fatty acid to soap, which raises its proportion in the surface layer still further and tends to make the lather even creamier. This book discusses as well the processes for the extraction of bone glue. The final chapter deals with the statistics of production and sales for soaps and detergents. This book is a valuable resource for chemists and senior students.

Book Surfactant Aggregation

Download or read book Surfactant Aggregation written by J.H. Clint and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Active Agents (surfactants) are vital components in biological systems, form key ingredients in consumer products and play an important role in many industrial processes. For example, cell membranes owe their structure to the aggregation of surfactants known as lipids which form a major component of the membrane. Other natural surfactants occur in the digestive system, in the lungs, and even in such substances as crude oil. Man-made surfactants are used in a wide range of domestic and industrial products and processes. In addition to detergents and personal care products, surfactants have found uses in almost every branch of the chemical industry as well as in several other industries. These include dyestuffs, fibres, mineral process ing, oil field chemicals, paints, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and plastics. Surfactants are versatile materials which are manufactured in a huge variety of forms to suit all of these applications. As a result of their importance, the technical literature on all aspects of surfactant behaviour is now very extensive. Surprisingly, however, the treatment in textbooks has been somewhat fragmented, often in the form of conference proceedings or edited, multi-authored works, both lacking in continuity.

Book Mixed Surfactant Systems

Download or read book Mixed Surfactant Systems written by Keizo Ogino and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-12-22 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work describes the solubility, solution properties, thermodynamics, miscibility, solubilization, mesomorphic character and other physical properties of mixed surfactant systems - presenting both theoretical analysis and a wide range of practical applications. Equations clarify complex and abstract constructs.;The book also: treats mixed critical micelle concentrations, surface tension, flotation and absorption in terms of thermodynamic models; explores the miscibility of fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants in the micelles, covering micelle formation, liquid-liquid solubility and thermodynamics of mixed micellization; determines the mean aggregation number by steady-state quenching methods, and analyzes the composition of mixed micelles; discusses the mechanisms and experimental studies of adsorption from mixed surfactant systems; examines surface activity of surfactant mixtures, mixing phenomena and liquid crystal phase behaviour; and reviews means of investigation that use ion-specific electrodes, light scattering, and NMR and flourescence probing.

Book Surfactants and Detergents

Download or read book Surfactants and Detergents written by Ashim Dutta and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surfactants are ubiquitous and have applications in diverse areas, including food, cosmetics, detergents, lubricants, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and targeted drug delivery systems. Their wide diversity of applications owes to their unique structure, namely, a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic group present in the same molecule. Although most surfactants used industrially are synthetic, there is a growing need for natural surfactants, as the latter is obtainable from renewable sources and are less toxic and highly biodegradable in contrast to their synthetic counterparts. This book is a compilation of interesting articles by various experts that cover various applications of both synthetic and natural surfactants.
