Power control in both the uplink and downlink of a cellular network has been extensively studied, especially over the last 15 years, and some of the results have enabled the continuous evolution and significant impact of the digital cellular technology. This survey provides a comprehensive discussion of the models, algorithms, analysis, and methodologies in this vast and growing literature. It starts with a taxonomy of the wide range of power control problem formulations, and progresses from the basic formulation to more sophisticated ones. When transmit power is the only set of optimization variables, algorithms for fixed SIR are presented first, before turning to their robust versions and joint SIR and power optimization. This is followed by opportunistic and non-cooperative power control. Then joint control of power together with beamforming pattern, base station assignment, spectrum allocation, and transmit schedule is surveyed one-by-one. Throughout the survey, we highlight the use of mathematical language and tools in the study of power control, including optimization theory, control theory, game theory, and linear algebra. Practical implementations of some of the algorithms in operational networks are discussed in the concluding section. As illustrated by the open problems presented at the end of most chapters, in the area of power control in cellular networks, there are still many under-explored directions and unresolved issues that remain theoretically challenging and practically important.

Book excerpt: One of the challenges in the next generation wireless communication systems is to provide high quality multimedia services. To address this issue, the approach we take in this dissertation is cross-layer design of communication systems. In the first part of the dissertation, we address transmission of progressive images or scalable video using hierarchical modulation. Thanks to the progressive features, progressive bitstreams enable each user in a multi-user network to decode the source at the rate that their channel allows. These progressive sources have the feature that they have gradual differences of importance in the bitstreams. One would like to have gradual differences in unequal error protection (UEP) to correspond to the gradual differences in importance. However, hierarchical modulation, which is often used for UEP and is currently employed in the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard, provides only a limited number of UEP levels. By multiplexing hierarchical modulation, we propose a high performance multilevel UEP system for the transmission of progressive sources. In the second part, we consider the transmission of a layered source in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system for broadcast scenarios. We first analyze the tradeoff between two different MIMO approaches, Alamouti coding and spatial multiplexing, having the same transmission rate. For analytical tractability, we consider high SNR approximate (minimum distance) bit error rates (BER) for both MIMO approaches. Based on this, we propose superposition MIMO coding, where two different MIMO approaches are hierarchically combined such that low-rate high priority components of the source are Alamouti coded, high-rate low priority components are spatially multiplexed, and the two different components are superposed. It is demonstrated that in broadcast scenarios, the proposed MIMO coding maximizes the performance of a layered source which has different data rates for its components. In the third part of the dissertation, we analyze the performance of n-channel symmetric FEC-based multiple description coding for a progressive mode of transmission. Multiple description source coding has recently emerged as an attractive framework for robust multimedia transmission over packet erasure channels. In the analysis, we consider transmission over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) networks in a frequency-selective, slowly-varying, Rayleigh faded environment.

Chips, however, cannot get larger and faster without a sharp decrease in power consumption beyond the current levels. Minimization of power consumption in VLSI chips has thus become an important design objective. In fact, with the explosive growth in demand for portable electronics and the usual push toward more complex functionality and higher performance, power consumption has in many cases become the limiting factor in satisfying the market demand. A new generation of power-conscious CAD tools are coming onto the market to help designers estimate, optimize and verify power consumption levels at most stages of the IC design process. These tools are especially prevalent at the register-transfer level and below. There is a great need for similar tools and capabilities at the behavioral and system levels of the design process. Many researchers and CAD tool developers are working on high-level power modeling and estimation, as well as power-constrained high-level synthesis and optimization. Techniques and tools alone are, however, insufficient to optimize VLSI circuit power dissipation - a consistent and convergent design methodology is also required. Power Optimization and Synthesis at Behavioral and System Levels Using Formal Methods was written to address some of the key problems in power analysis and optimization early in the design process. In particular, this book focuses on power macro-modeling based on regression analysis and power minimization through behavioral transformations, scheduling, resource assignment and hardware/software partitioning and mapping. What differentiates this book from other published work on the subject is the mathematical basis and formalism behind the algorithms and the optimality of these algorithms subject to the stated assumptions. To realize Gbps data rates, millimeter-wave (MMW) bands around 60 GHz is attractive due to the availability of large bandwidth of 9 GHz. Recent research work in the Gbps data rates around 60 GHz band has focused on short-range indoor applications, such as uncompressed video transfer, high-speed file transfer between electronic devices, and communication to and from kiosk. Many of these applications are limited to 10 m or less, because of the huge free space path loss and oxygen absorption for 60 GHz band MMW signal. This book introduces new knowledge and novel circuit techniques to design low-power MMW circuits and systems. It also focuses on unlocking the potential applications of the 60 GHz band for high-speed outdoor applications. The innovative design application significantly improves and enables high-data-rate low-cost communication links between two access points seamlessly. The 60 GHz transceiver system-on-chip provides an alternative solution to upgrade existing networks without introducing any building renovation or external network laying works.

In recent years, data and multimedia services have become important in wireless communications. As a result, bandwidth requirement and number of users become delicate problems. To support high data rate requirement for future WCS, it is essential to efficiently allocate the limited resources. The major challenges are the dynamic nature of wireless channel, limited resources such as power, frequency spectrum, and diversified Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a special case of multicarrier transmission that supports high data rate operation. OFDM is a modulation and multiplexing technique appropriate for current and future wireless networks. OFDM divides the available bandwidth into a number of parallel independent orthogonal subchannels and their bandwidth is much less than the coherence bandwidth of the channel. The wide band frequency selective fading channel is converted into several narrow band flat fading channels. OFDM is an excellent method to overcome multipath fading effects. One of the goals of WCS is to enhance the capacity of the channel. Multiple Access Technique (MAT) permits several mobile users to share the given bandwidth in an effective way.
