Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses the performance evaluation of radio resource management (RRM) for 3GPP LTE OFDMA Cellular data networks. The radio resource allocation strategies address processes in which the available scarce and prohibitively expensive radio resources are assigned to each active user. An efficient scheduling algorithm plays an important role for effective utilization of radio resources, high spectrum efficiency, low latency, and fairness among users whithin a system as well as for the entire system performance. The reseach work presented in this dissertation focuses on the performance evaluation of the common packet scheduling algorithms, namely Maximum Rate (MR), Round Robin (RR), and Proportional Fair (PF). Only the scheduling for the downlink (DL) transmission of the LTE cellular systems is considered. The performance evaluation is performed for a regular hexagonal multi cell deployment, universal frequency reuse scheme, Single Input Single Outpt(SISO) versus spatial multiplexing (SM) Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) omnidirectional antenna confugrations, various bandwidth sizes, Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) technique, and multipath selective fading channel conditions through Monte Carlo type simulations. The design of the custom built system level simulator, implementation of various scenarios of the LTE system, and the simulator findings are thoroughly described in the document. The simulator presents an universal framework for performance evaluation of existing and for development of new scheduling algorithms.

Book excerpt: In order to meet the ever-increasing demand for wireless broadband services from fast growing mobile users, the Long Term Evolution -Advanced (LTE-A) standard has been proposed to effectively improve the system capacity and the spectral efficiency for the fourth-generation (4G) wireless mobile communications. Many advanced techniques are incorporated in LTE-A systems to jointly ameliorate system performance, among which Carrier Aggregation (CA) is considered as one of the most promising improvements that has profound significance even in the upcoming 5G era. Component carriers (CCs) from various portions of the spectrum are logically concatenated to form a much larger virtual band, resulting in remarkable boosted system capacity and user data throughput. However, the unique features of CA have posed many emerging challenges as well as span-new opportunities on the Radio Resource Management (RRM) in the LTE-A systems. First, although multi-CC transmission can bring higher throughput, it may incur more intensive interference for each CC and more power consumption for users. Thus the performance gain of CA under different conditions needs fully evaluating. Besides, as CA offers flexible CC selection and cross-CC load balancing and scheduling, enhanced RRM strategies should be designed to further optimize the overall resource utilization. In addition, CA enables the frequency reuse on a CC resolution, adding another dimension to inter-cell interference management in heterogeneous networks (HetNets). New interference management mechanisms should be designed to take the advantage of CA. Last but not least, CA empowers the LTE-A systems to aggregate the licensed spectrum with the unlicensed spectrum, thus offering a capacity surge. Yet how to balance the traffic between licensed and unlicensed spectrum and how to achieve a harmony coexistence with other unlicensed systems are still open issues. To this end, the dissertation emphasizes on the new functionalities introduced by CA to optimize the RRM performance in LTE-A systems. The main objectives are four-fold: 1) to fully evaluate the benefits of CA from different perspectives under different conditions via both theoretical analysis and simulations; 2) to design cross-layer CC selection, packet scheduling and power control strategies to optimize the target performance; 3) to analytically model the interference of HetNets with CA and propose dynamic interference mitigation strategies in a CA scenario; and 4) to investigate the impact of LTE transmissions on other unlicensed systems and develop enhanced RRM mechanisms for harmony coexistence. To achieve these objectives, we first analyze the benefits of CA via investigating the user accommodation capabilities of the system in the downlink admission control process. The LTE-A users with CA capabilities and the legacy LTE users are considered. Analytical models are developed to derive the maximum number of users that can be admitted into the system given the user QoS requirements and traffic features. The results show that with only a slightly higher spectrum utilization, the system can admit as much as twice LTE-A users than LTE users when the user traffic is bursty. Second, we study the RRM in the single-tier LTE-A system and propose a cross-layer dynamic CC selection and power control strategy for uplink CA. Specifically, the uplink power offset effects caused by multi-CC transmission are considered. An estimation method for user bandwidth allocation is developed and a combinatorial optimization problem is formulated to improve the user throughput via maximizing the user power utilization. Third, we explore the interference management problem in multi-tier HetNets considering the CC-resolution frequency reuse. An analytical model is devised to capture the randomness behaviors of the femtocells exploiting the stochastic geometry theory. The interaction between the base stations of different tiers are formulated into a two-level Stackelberg game, and a backward induction method is exploited to obtain the Nash equilibrium. Last, we focus on the mechanism design for licensed and unlicensed spectrum aggregation. An LTE MAC protocol on unlicensed spectrum is developed considering the coexistence with the Wi-Fi systems. The protocol captures the asynchronous nature of Wi-Fi transmissions in time-slotted LTE frame structure and strike a tunable tradeoff between LTE and Wi-Fi performance. Analytical analysis is also presented to reveal the essential relation among different parameters of the two systems. In summary, the dissertation aims at fully evaluating the benefits of CA in different scenarios and making full use of the benefits to develop efficient and effective RRM strategies for better LTE-Advanced system performance.

Book excerpt: The new era of mobile communications is dictated by the user demand for robust and high speed connections, data hungry applications and seamless connectivity. Operators and researchers all over the world are challenged to fulfill these requirements by providing enhanced coverage, increased capacity and efficient usage of the scarce spectrum. The introduction of the fourth generation systems (4G), LTE and LTE-A, have set the initiative for a technology evolution that offers new possibilities and is able to satisfy the user requirements and overcome the imposed challenges. However, and despite the improvements brought by the LTE and LTE-A systems, there are certain constraints that still need to be surpassed. LTE for example adopts innovating technologies, such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Access (OFDMA) that improves the spectral efficiency and reduces the Intra-Cell Interference. Nevertheless, Inter-Cell Interference (ICI) remains a constraining factor that can degrade the system capacity and limit the overall performance of the network. On that respect, Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) techniques are adopted with target the interference mitigation. One of the limitations of these techniques is that follow static configurations lacking of flexibility and adaptation on network changes. Moreover, LTE-A employs enhanced and new techniques and involves alternative strategies. A promising solution lies on the introduction of Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets), which are networks that include low power small cells under the already existing macro cellular network and exploit several other technologies, such as WiFi. HetNets can further improve the network capacity, enhance the coverage and provide higher speed data transfer. However, due to the heterogeneous nature of the network, traditional methods for the user association, resource allocation and interference mitigation may not always be suitable since their design was based on homogeneous deployments. As such, new and enhanced methods are introduced, such as enhanced ICIC (eICIC), with their accompanied requirements and challenges. Motivated by the abovementioned aspects, this thesis has been focused on the study of ICIC and eICIC schemes, the identification of the related challenges, the enhancement of existing schemes and the proposal of novel solutions. In particular in the initial stages of the work, ICIC techniques have been studied and analyzed. A distributed algorithm that performs dynamic channel allocation has been developed for homogeneous deployments and extended later on to include heterogeneous networks. The solution has been optimized with the use of the Gibbs Sampler, while the setting of algorithm related parameters has been addressed through a detailed analysis. Moreover, a possible implementation of the solution has been presented in detail. The efficiency of the proposed schemes has been demonstrated through simulations and comparisons with benchmark schemes. In the next steps, the work has targeted eICIC techniques with purpose the investigation and analysis of the main constraining issues related to the user association, resource management and interference mitigation. Novel eICIC schemes that aim a better resource management and the overall capacity improvement have been developed and presented in detail, while the performance of the solutions has been shown through simulations and comparisons with reference schemes. Moreover, an optimized eICIC solution has been implemented based on genetic algorithms. Simulation results and comparisons with reference schemes have demonstrated the efficiency of the solution, while the selected configurations are discussed and analyzed.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the issue of optimizing radio resource allocation (RRA) and user admission control (AC) for multiple multicasting sessions on a single high altitude platform (HAP) with multiple antennas on-board. HAPs are quasi-stationary aerial platforms that carry a wireless communications payload to provide wireless communications and broadband services. They are meant to be located in the stratosphere layer of the atmosphere at altitudes in the range 17-22 km and have the ability to fly on demand to temporarily or permanently serve regions with unavailable telecommunications infrastructure. An important requirement that the book focusses on is the development of an efficient and effective method for resource allocation and user admissions for HAPs, especially when it comes to multicasting. Power, frequency, space (antennas selection) and time (scheduling) are the resources considered in the problem over an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) HAP system. Due to the strong dependence of the total number of users that could join different multicast groups, on the possible ways we may allocate resources to these groups, it is of significant importance to consider a joint user to session assignments and RRA across the groups. From the service provider's point of view, it would be in its best interest to be able to admit as many higher priority users as possible, while satisfying their quality of service requirements. High priority users could be users subscribed in and paying higher for a service plan that gives them preference of admittance to receive more multicast transmissions, compared to those paying for a lower service plan. Also, the user who tries to join multiple multicast groups (i.e. receive more than one multicast transmission), would have preferences for which one he would favor to receive if resources are not enough to satisfy the QoS requirements. Research efforts focus on the development of innovative resource management techniques and have introduced the long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) communication standard. Novel business models make the growth of network capacity sustainable by enabling MNOs to combine their resources. The fifth generation (5G) mobile networks will involve technologies and business stakeholders with different capabilities and demands that may affect the QoS provision, requiring efficient radio resource sharing. The need for higher network capacity has introduced novel technologies that improve resource allocation efficiency. Direct connectivity among user equipment terminals (UEs) circumventing the LTE-A infrastructure alleviates the network overload. Part of mobile traffic is offloaded to outband device-to-device (D2D) connections (in unlicensed spectrum) enabling data exchange between UEs directly or via UEs-relays. Still, MNOs need additional spectrum resources and infrastructure. The inter-operator network sharing concept has emerged motivating the adoption of virtualization that enables network slicing, i.e., dynamic separation of resources in virtual slices (VSs). VSs are managed in isolation by different tenants using software defined networking and encompass core and radio access network resources allocated periodically to UEs. When UEs access OTT applications, flows with different QoS demands and priorities determined by OTT service providers (OSPs) are generated. OSPs' policies should be considered in VS allocation. The coexisting technologies, business models and stakeholders require sophisticated radio resource management (RRM) techniques. To that end, RRM is performed in a complex ecosystem. When D2D communication involves data concurrently downloaded by the mobile network, QoS may be affected by LTE-A network parameters (resource scheduling policy, downlink channel conditions). It is also affected by the relay selection, as UEs may not be willing to help unknown UE pairs and UEs' social ties in mobile applications may influence willingness for D2D cooperation. Thus, effective medium access control (MAC) mechanisms should coordinate D2D transmissions employing advanced techniques, e.g., network coding (NC). When UEs access OTT applications, OSPs' policies are not considered by MNOs in RRM and OSPs cannot apply flow prioritization. Network neutrality issues also arise when OSPs claim resources from MNOs aiming to minimize grade of service (GoS). OSPs' intervention may delay flows' accommodation due to the time required for OSP-MNO interaction and the time the flows spent waiting for resources. This thesis proposes novel solutions to the RRM issues of outband D2D communication and VS allocation for OSPs in 5G networks. We present a cooperative D2D MAC protocol that leverages the opportunities for NC in D2D communication under the influence of LTE-A network parameters and its throughput performance analysis. The protocol improves D2D throughput and energy efficiency, especially for UEs with better downlink channel conditions. We next introduce social awareness in D2D MAC design and present a social-aware cooperative D2D MAC protocol that employs UEs' social ties to promote the use of friendly relays reducing the total energy consumption. Motivated by the lack of approaches for OSP-oriented RRM, we present a novel flow prioritization algorithm based on matching theory that applies OSPs' policies respecting the network neutrality and the analysis of its GoS and delay performance. The algorithm maintains low overhead and delay without affecting fairness among OSPs. Our techniques highlight the QoS improvement induced by the joint consideration of different technologies and business stakeholders in RRM design.
