Book Introduction to a Scientific System of Mythology

Download or read book Introduction to a Scientific System of Mythology written by C. O. Muller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're interested in learning more about Greek mythology and a new method of organizing your thoughts about mythos, then Introduction to a Scientific System of Mythology is an invaluable tool for analyzing mythology in any culture. Introduction to a Scientific System of Mythology begins by defining mythos and establishing the idea that myths are made up of two distinct concepts: the ideal and the real. Then the source of mythology is explored, asking two main questions: what do we know about mythology and how do we know it? The answer is that myths are passed down through generations, first through oral tradition, then through epic poetry, Alexandrian poets, lyric poets, logographers and historians. The chapter regarding the actual origin of mythos is intriguing, for as Muller points out, it is impossible to trace specific myths to particular people. If myths originated with more than one person or from a group, then how did this collective establishment of storytelling actually happen? Muller's answer, in part, is that there is a collective unconscious need to create heroes and stories that relate to life. Muller's analysis predates the formal establishment of psychology, but draws on the same concepts to describe mythology's role in Greek life. Having laid down a scientific method for analyzing mythos, Muller explains how to apply his reasoning to the great Greek heroes. Finally, he compares his own scientific method with the approaches taken by other scholars and philosophers, explaining the similarities and differences. This section is a helpful reference for anyone who studies mythology, philosophy, literature or other subjects. Introduction to a Scientific System of Mythology is well-translated from the original German and is a smooth read. Those interested in mythology should definitely read this book. Download or read book Orpheus and Greek Religion written by William Keith Guthrie and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tales told of Orpheus are legion. He is said to have been an Argonaut--and to have saved Jason's life. Rivers are reported to have stopped their flow to listen to the sounds of his lyre and his voice. Plato cites his poetry and Herodotus refers to "practices that are called Orphic." Did Orpheus, in fact, exist? His influence on Greek thought is undeniable, but his disciples left little of substance behind them. Indeed, their Orphic precepts have been lost to time. W.K.C. Guthrie attempts to uncover and define Orphism by following its circuitous path through ancient history. He tackles this daunting task with the determination of a detective and the analytical rigor of a classical scholar. He ferries his readers with him on a singular voyage of discovery.

Book The Violence Mythos

Download or read book The Violence Mythos written by Barbara Whitmer and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1997-10-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a powerful thesis on the nature and significance of violence and its mythos in Western culture, and offers an alternative interactive mythos that bridges the mind/body split inherent in most theories of violence. "The Violence Mythos presents us with a powerful thesis on the nature and significance of violence in human society. It develops its argument with passion and concern, combined with a lucid and sensitive intelligence. The book is sharp .and to the point, challenging any complacency with its idealism and its commitment to change. Whitmer is an author with attitude and with spirit. The violence mythos is a collection of beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and social expectations about violence in Western culture. It includes the war hero myth, the victimizer/victim exploitative dynamic, the theory of innate violence, the mind/body dualism, the myth of male aggression and the subordination of women, the marginalization of trust, and the development of technology in a tradition of destructive instrumentalism. At the core of the violence mythos is the belief that humans are innately violent. The cultural system is then able to legitimate, rationalize, and use violence to control "violent humans", and thus becomes a self-reinforcing, self-perpetuating system of direct and indirect means of social control. This is the repetitive cycle of violence in trauma reenactment, transferred intergenerationally through the roles and rituals of the hero/perpetrator myth. The cycle ceases with the understanding of trauma in the trust triad of the interdependent mythos.

Book Seeing Systems

Download or read book Seeing Systems written by Barry Oshry and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paris 1874, Boulevard des Capucines: a group of artists that were to radically change the rules of the art world, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Paul Czanne, Edgar Degas and Frdric Bazille, mounted an exhibition in the studio of photographer Flix Nadar. The exhibition proved to be a veritable scandal that filled critics with indignation, and they contemptuously labeled the paintings eoeimpressioniste because they had been badly constructed and were ambiguous. In fact, the technique they had adopted was utterly original because it entailed painting outdoorse"en plein aire"using newly available apparatus and tools such as a portable easel, ready-to-use paints in airtight tubes that came in a whole range of bright colors, and paintbrushes with broad, flat bristles held in place by a metal ring.

Book A New System Or an Analysis of Antient Mythology

Download or read book A New System Or an Analysis of Antient Mythology written by Jacob Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New System- or, an Analysis of Antient MythologyThe New System attempted to link the mythologies of the world to the stories recorded in Genesis. Bryant argued that the descendents of Ham had been the most energetic, but also the most rebellious peoples of the world and had given rise to the great ancient and classical civilisations. He called these people "Amonians", because he believed that the Egyptian god Amon was a deified form of Ham. He argued that Ham had been identified with the sun, and that much of pagan European religion derived from Amonian sun worship.
