Download or read book Laxatives written by Francesco Capasso and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constipation is a common disorder that is often defined differently by patients and physicians. Clinically, constipation occurs when bowel move ments are difficult or painful. The "normality" of bowel movements, in terms of frequency, varies among individuals; frequency that is thought by one person to be constipation may be reported by another to be usual and thus normal. Often the perceived "need" to have a bowel movement leads to self-treatment with laxatives as these drugs are widely available without a prescription. This situation can raise problems in patient care, because of potential interactions between laxatives and other medications. Furthermore, chronic use (abuse) oflaxatives can cause serious medical consequences, causing patients to visit physicians, and even to be hospitalized for further evaluation and care. This has a financial impact on the patient, and on health care systems. It is essential that pharmacists, physicians and other health care practitioners counsel patients on the causes of constipation and the proper use oflaxatives. A medical work-up by a physician should be done to determine if the constipation is due to a pathological process. Often nor mal bowel function (for an invididual) can be maintained by diet and/or lifestyle. Most laxatives in use today are of botanical origin. Further research on the mechanism of action of these and synthetic laxatives is needed to bet ter define their pharmacology and toxicology.

Download or read book Cure Constipation Now written by Wes Jones and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-07-07 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-follow plan to regain a healthy gastrointestinal system-and relieve problems from gas to bloating to IBS. Close to 100 million Americans suffer from chronic-and sometimes very serious- gastrointestinal conditions. Prominent gastroenterologist Dr. Wesley Jones has found that virtually all digestive problems have one single underlying cause-constipation. Our modern diets and stressful lifestyles can make poor digestion such a common experience that sometimes people don't even recognize it as a problem. Here, Dr. Jones provides a proven program that has already helped thousands relieve and prevent constipation-related gastrointestinal problems for life. No one wants to talk about constipation, but millions suffer from it. Take as evidence the ubiquitous ads for Dannon's billion-dollar brand, Activia, which features Jamie Lee Curtis talking about "occasional irregularity." Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints in the United States, resulting in about two million doctor visits annually. However, most people treat themselves without seeking medical help, as is evident from the millions of dollars Americans spend on laxatives each year. Now, this book will offer them a safe, proven, easy-to-follow program to relieve constipation once and for all. Because it's not just uncomfortable-it's unhealthy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesis of Medicinal Agents from Plants highlights the importance of synthesizing medicinal agents from plants and outlines methods for performing it effectively. Beginning with an introduction to the significance of medicinal plants, the book goes on to provide a historical overview of drug synthesis before exploring how this can be used to successfully replicate and adapt the active agents from natural sources. Chapters then explore the medicinal properties of a number of important plants, before concluding with a discussion of the future of drugs from medicinal plants. Illustrated with real-world examples, it is a practical resource for researchers in this field. In an age of rapid environmental destruction, hundreds of medicinal plants are at risk of extinction from overexploitation and deforestation, limiting the natural resources available for active agent extraction, thereby threatening the discovery of future cures for diseases. Simultaneously, with the increasing population and advances in medical sciences, the demand for drugs is continuously increasing and cannot be met with just plants. The ability to synthetically replicate the active compounds from these plants is essential in creating an ecologically-aware, sustainable future for drug design - Includes detailed coverage of therapeutic compound synthesis - Uses multiple real-world examples to support content - Lays out a sustainable template for the future of developing active agents from natural products

Book excerpt: Constipation is a Serious Condition Constipation is a more serious condition than what most people think. The level of health you have starts with having good movement of the food you eat through your gastrointestinal system. Your normal health level is based on what food you eat, how you eat it, how you chew it, how your stomach processes it, how your small intestine assimilates it, how your colon moves it forward, and how you eliminate it. What Your Colon Does Your colon recycles nutrients and water to all parts of your body. It takes toxic chemicals released from the liver and gallbladder and traps them in your fecal matter for elimination. Your colon also traps excess estrogen, cholesterol, bad bacteria, and excess chemical or nutrients your body no longer needs.
