Book Polymer Synthesis Theory and Practice

Download or read book Polymer Synthesis Theory and Practice written by Dietrich Braun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasis is on a broad description of the general methods and processes for the synthesis, modification and characterization of macromolecules. These more fundamental chapters will be supplemented by selected and detailed experiments. In addition to the preparative aspects, the book also gives the reader an impression on the relation of chemical constitution and morphology of Polymers to their properties, as well as on their application areas. Thus, an additional textbook will not be needed in order to understand the experiments. The 5th edition contains numerous changes: In recent years, so-called functional polymers which have special electrical, electronic, optical and biological properties, have gained more and more in interest. This textbook was therefore supplemented by recipes which describe the synthesis of these materials in a new chapter "Functional polymers". Together with new experiments in chapter 3,4 and 5 the book now contains more than 120 recipes that describe a wide range of macromolecules. From the reviews of recent editions: "This is an excellent book for all polymer chemists engaged in synthesis research studies and education. It is educationally sound and has excellent laboratory synthetic examples. The fundamentals are well done for the teaching of students and references are resonably up-to-date. As in previous issues, there are sections dealing with an introduction; structure and nomenclature; methods and techniques for synthesis, characterization, processing and modification of polymers. ....The authors have noted the following changes from previous editions- a new section on correlations of structure, morphology and properties; revision and enlargement of other property and characterization procedures; additional new experiments such as controlled radical polymerization; enzymatic polymerizations; microelmulsions; and electrical conducting polymers. This is a high quality textbook at a reasonable price and should be considered as a suitable reference for all engaged in synthetic areas of polymer research." (Eli M. Pearce, Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY, USA)

Book A Modular Synthesis of Processable and Thermally Stable Semi fluorinated Aryl Ether Polymers Via Step growth Polymerization of Fluoroalkenes

Download or read book A Modular Synthesis of Processable and Thermally Stable Semi fluorinated Aryl Ether Polymers Via Step growth Polymerization of Fluoroalkenes written by Ketki Eknath Shelar and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tailored fluoropolymers remain the leading choice for a wide variety of advanced high-performance applications, including electronic/optical and energy conversion, owing to their unique blend of complementary high-performance properties. Amorphous semi-fluorinated polymers exhibit improved solubility and melt processability when compared to traditional perfluoropolymers. A leading class of semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers includes perfluorocyclobutyl (PFCB), perfluorocycloalkenyl (PFCA), and fluoroarylene vinylene ether (FAVE) polymers. Monomers containing aromatic trifluorovinyl ethers (TFVE) are used to synthesize PFCB polymers via radical-mediated [2+2] cyclodimerization. On the other hand, FAVE and PFCA polymers are polymerized via base-mediated nucleophilic addition/elimination of bisphenols with TFVE monomers and decafluorocyclohexene respectively. The use of different monomer cores (aromatic, aliphatic, contorted, and renewable) should help to develop general structure/property relationships for this versatile and expanding approach to semi-fluorinated aryl ether polymers. The enchainment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cores with functional fluorocarbon groups (or segments) recently afforded a new class of semi- fluorinated polymers in the continuing quest for novel organic materials for potential applications in optoelectronic, gas-separation, and advanced composites. Chapter 2 details the incorporation of commercially available acenaphthenequinone was achieved to afford PFCB aryl ether polymers with excellent solubility, high thermal stability, and film-forming capability. Chapter 3 represents base-promoted nucleophilic addition/elimination of commercial bisphenols with TFVE-triphenylene monomers affording FAVE aryl ether polymers possessing excellent solution processability, high thermal stability and photostability. In addition, triphenylene-enchained FAVE polymers exhibit extreme thermal-oxidative photostability and emit blue light after heating in air at 250 °C for 24 h. Further, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) computations were performed to understand electronic polymer structures. In one case, post-polymerization Scholl coupling converted the central triphenylene core to afford a hexabenzocoronene containing semi-fluorinated polymer with new optoelectronic properties. Chapter 4 demonstrates synthesis and characterization of renewable semi-fluorinated polymers obtained using aliphatic diol isosorbide. This renewable diol readily polymerizes with bis-TFVE derivatives of bisphenol A and 6F to provide high molecular weight thermoplastics exhibiting excellent solubility and tough, transparent film-forming capability. Finally, Chapter 5 presents synthesis of TFVE enchained corannulene which gave blue-light emission and outstanding processability. Synthesis and characterization, including the new materials' optical, thermal, and electronic properties, is presented.

It shows how to design self-healing polymers and explains the dynamics in these systems. Different self-healing concepts such as encapsulated systems and supramolecular systems are detailed. Chapters on analysis and friction detection in self-healing polymers and on applications round off the book.

Book Hetero atom Containing Functional Polymers

Download or read book Hetero atom Containing Functional Polymers written by Chemist Feng and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mission to manage ever increased energy demands and reduce carbon foot print has challenged scientists and engineers to develop new materials with superior characteristics. In this scenario, lithium-ion batteries have been the dominating technology for not only applications in consumer electronics but also are essential for clean energy storage. On the other hand, the capture and separation of CO2 [carbon dioxide] in power generation and in industrial processes is considered to be a key to reduce the carbon footprint. Living anionic polymerization along with controlled polymerization techniques has realized the preparation of a wide variety of functional polymers with tunable properties. In this dissertation, we will present preparation of hetero-atom containing polymers using various polymerization techniques and post-polymerization modifications. We also want to explore: how can we employ these functional polymers to solve the current challenging problems? In chapter 1, we present the review of the state of the art polymer electrolytes for next-generation lithium ion batteries followed by the introduction of current CO2 [carbon dioxide] fixation and CO2/N2 [carbon dioxide/ nitrogen] gas separation techniques. In chapter 2, we discuss the synthetic methodology and experimental techniques including living anionic polymerization using high vacuum techniques, cationic ring opening polymerization techniques and hydrosilylation. In chapter 3 and chapter 4, we discuss the preparation of ambipolar polymer electrolytes and polymerized ionic liquids based on polydimethylsiloxane. The characterization, lithium ionic conductivity and structure-properties relationship are discussed. Chapter 5 describes a novel method to obtain living anionic polymerization of 2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline. Through our modified synthetic conditions, block copolymers of IPOx are also prepared and microphase separations are studied. In chapter 6, we investigate the synthesis gold nanoparticle using PIPOx as template. The size of god nanoparticles will be analyzed using TEM [transmission electron microscopy] and AFM [atomic force microscopy]. Furthermore, the interactions between PIPOx [poly(2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline)] template and AuNPs [gold nano particles] is studied using XPS [X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy]. In chapter 7, we introduce the preparation of amidoxime-modified PTMSP [poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne)] and its applications on CO2/N2 [carbon dioxide/ nitrogen] separation. Finally, the research in this dissertation is summarized and future work is presented in chapter 8.

Book Synthesis of Novel Ion conducting Polymers Via Reversible Addition fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization

Download or read book Synthesis of Novel Ion conducting Polymers Via Reversible Addition fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization written by Kyle C. Bryson and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent work in the Hickner research group has focused on creating novel, welldefined, ion-containing block copolymers for studies relating macromolecular chemistry, architecture, and resulting microphase-separated morphology to the transport properties of bulk films, such as ion-conductivity and water uptake, for application in polymer membranes for water salinity management and Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs). Reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, a controlled free radical polymerization technique, was used to synthesize homopolymers and block copolymers of styrene and vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC), a versatile vinylic monomer that serves as a platform onto which a wide array of ionic moieties may be attached. Synthesis of both a monofunctional (grown from one end) and a difunctional (grown from two ends) RAFT chain transfer agent was successful. Many attempts at difunctional, monofunctional, and chain extension RAFT polymerization of styrene and VBC yielded knowledge of experimental conditions most conducive to molecular weight control. Difunctional RAFT polymerization poses particular obstacles related to the unwanted creation of monofunctionalized polymer chains. Styrene polymerizations proceeded with more control than VBC polymerizations.
