Book Synthesis of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots for Fabrication of Hybrid Light Emitting Diodes

Download or read book Synthesis of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots for Fabrication of Hybrid Light Emitting Diodes written by Michael Zachary McCreary and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthesis of CdSe quantum dots was carried out using a variety of methods including co-precipitation method, reverse micellar method, and hot injection method. Of these three methods, only the hot injection method produced an immediately viable product for application in the hybrid light emitting diode proposed. The co-precipitation method did generate the ability to perform the reverse micellar method which produced ~30 nm diameter nanorods of mostly amorphous material. These rods were analyzed using XRD, and TEM. The hot injection method using octadecene as the solvent and various ligands, including oleic acid, benzene-1,4-dithiol, mercapto-benzoic acid and TOP, created quantum dots exhibiting photoluminescence in the green region of the visible spectrum. These quantum dots were characterized using UV-Visible Spectroscopy and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy. The oleic acid capped QD had a characteristic wavelength of 560 nm. While the mercapto-benzoic acid and benzene-1,4-dithiol capped QD had a characteristic wavelengths of 510 nm and 555 nm, respectively, all under the same operating conditions. For the purposes of device fabrication, the NN-Labs QDs were mostly used because their performance was much better than quantum dots synthesized in house. The fabrication of a hybrid light emitting diode has been developed with the structure ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK/CdSe QD/Alq3/Al. The device has exhibited a turn-on voltage from 2-3 V with currents ranging from 4-5 mA. The PEDOT:PSS layer was deposited using spin coating and analyzed using Photoluminescence Spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, and Surface Profiling. The layer produce is sufficient for device fabrication. To facilitate proper hole transport and a sufficient quantum dot layer, a PVK/QD composite solution was used to create a monolayer layer of quantum dots by phase separation of the solutes in the solution. Alq3 and Al were deposited using thermal evaporation techniques.

Book Synthesis of Quantum Dots with Tunable Fluorescence Lifetimes

Download or read book Synthesis of Quantum Dots with Tunable Fluorescence Lifetimes written by Thomas Michael Barnard and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum dots are semiconductor crystals less than ̃10 nm in diameter. At this size, regime quantum confinement effects become significant. With cadmium selenide for example, a strong fluorescence becomes evident in the visible range once the spheres approach this scale. This fluorescence emission wavelength can be tuned from blue-green to red by merely changing the diameter of the sphere. The fluorescent properties of CdSe quantum dots have been exploited in numerous applications such as microscopic biological imaging, where the quantum dots perform better than traditional organic dyes. We have synthesized a new hybrid material that combines the remarkable fluorescent attributes of quantum dots with the long-excited state lifetimes of lanthanide complexes. In this new material, the lanthanide that is attached to the quantum dot can absorb light from a very short laser pulse (̃ 5 nanoseconds) and stay excited for a long period of time (microseconds to milliseconds). Eventually the excitation energy from the lanthanide is transferred to the quantum dot causing the quantum dot to fluoresce, effectively lengthening the lifetime of the quantum dot by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the lifetime is a function of the separation between the lanthanide and the quantum dot. By adjusting the separation between them, the fluorescent lifetimes of the quantum dots could be tuned. One potential application for this new tunable material would be for making nanoscale barcodes.

Book excerpt: Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field comprising materials scientists, chemists, physicists, and engineers dedicated to understanding the chemistry behind the associated synthesis, purification, modification, and applications. Already, nanotechnology has been instrumental to advances in medicine, electronics, catalysis, and cosmetics. The work of nanotechnologists has enabled society to move from the current “Silicon Age” into a new “Nano Age.” These alternatives to Si-based technologies are expected to combine the optoelectronic properties of bulk inorganic semiconductors with the benefits of additive device manufacturing—low cost, large area, and solution-based processes. This primer focuses on a class of nanomaterials known as colloidal quantum dots. Known for their solution processability and size-dependent optoelectronic properties, the study of colloidal quantum dots has garnered significant attention from the research community. The goal of this primer is to equip newcomers with the introductory knowledge and tools necessary to enter the field. As such, the scope of our work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of quantum dots; where possible, we point the reader to further reading specific to applications.

New deposition techniques are necessary to the realization of this goal, enabling QD organic hybrids to be created in a quick and reliable manner compatible with known device fabrication methods. With these techniques, quantum dot light emitting devices are fabricated, measured, and analyzed. The devices are of high efficiency and color saturation, and provide us with a test bed for understanding the interactions between inorganic QDs and organic thin films.
