Book Synthesis of Application specific Memory Designs

Download or read book Synthesis of Application specific Memory Designs written by Herman Schmit and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper discusses the mapping of arrays in a behavior to memories in an implementation. We introduce a novel approach to the design of memory systems, which is based on a variety of array grouping techniques and dimensional transformations, and the binding of array groups to memory components with different dimensions, access times, and number of ports. The results of design actions are computed in terms of memory cost, the number of wires necessary to connect the memory to the data path, and the limit of performance imposed by the memory design on the implementation. Three different procedures can be used to find a suitable memory design. All three procedures are directed by a weighted and constrained system cost function, which enables the expression of the user's design priorities. Compared to related research efforts, our approach improves performance by as much as 19%, reduces memory cost by as much as 40%, and decreases the number of wires required to connect the memory to the data path by up to 57%."

Book Synthesis of Application specific Memory Structures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The benefits of a behavioral synthesis design methodology, including higher designer productivity and shorter time-to- market, are the results of allowing the designer to use more abstract and familiar specifications. One of the most common and familiar abstractions used by hardware and software designers is the array, which allows the specification of a set of values that have a unique index associated with each element. A behavioral synthesis tool that accepts specifications containing arrays must map the storage implied by the arrays to memory in an implementation of that specification. In many data-intensive applications, these memory design decisions have a larger impact on the cost, performance, and power of the implementation than any other design decision made by a behavioral synthesis tool. Most behavioral synthesis tools, however, fail to separate the concepts of array specification and memory implementation, which severely restricts the span of designs that can be explored given a behavioral specification. This thesis describes a new tool in a behavioral synthesis system, named ASSASYN, that creates memory designs according to the semantics of the behavioral specification and a set of user-specified design goals. ASSASYN's approach is based on the observation that both arrays and memory components are rectangular arrangements of bits. The creation of an array-memory mapping is therefore a rectangular placement problem. Because the tasks of array-memory mapping and scheduling are highly interdependent, ASSASYN simultaneously optimizes the array-memory mapping and the array access schedule. This approach to creating a memory design is more general and effective than any previously published approach. Other novel contributions of this research include fast and inexpensive techniques for address generation and synthesis timing models for both static and dynamic memory components. Five different data-intensive applications have been used to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. For each application, ASSASYN was used to generate a set of implementations that span a wide range of memory cost, memory power and performance characteristics. Compared to related research efforts in memory design, ASSASYN generated designs with up to 19% better performance, up to 40% less memory cost, and up to 57% fewer wires between the memory system and the data path."

Book Application Driven Architecture Synthesis

Download or read book Application Driven Architecture Synthesis written by Francky Catthoor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Application-Driven Architecture Synthesis describes the state of the art of architectural synthesis for complex real-time processing. In order to deal with the stringent timing requirements and the intricacies of complex real-time signal and data processing, target architecture styles and target application domains have been adopted to make the synthesis approach feasible. These approaches are also heavily application-driven, which is illustrated by many realistic demonstrations, used as examples in the book. The focus is on domains where application-specific solutions are attractive, such as significant parts of audio, telecom, instrumentation, speech, robotics, medical and automotive processing, image and video processing, TV, multi-media, radar, sonar. Application-Driven Architecture Synthesis is of interest to both academics and senior design engineers and CAD managers in industry. It provides an excellent overview of what capabilities to expect from future practical design tools, and includes an extensive bibliography.

Book In Near Memory Computing

Download or read book In Near Memory Computing written by Daichi Fujiki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a structured introduction of the key concepts and techniques that enable in-/near-memory computing. For decades, processing-in-memory or near-memory computing has been attracting growing interest due to its potential to break the memory wall. Near-memory computing moves compute logic near the memory, and thereby reduces data movement. Recent work has also shown that certain memories can morph themselves into compute units by exploiting the physical properties of the memory cells, enabling in-situ computing in the memory array. While in- and near-memory computing can circumvent overheads related to data movement, it comes at the cost of restricted flexibility of data representation and computation, design challenges of compute capable memories, and difficulty in system and software integration. Therefore, wide deployment of in-/near-memory computing cannot be accomplished without techniques that enable efficient mapping of data-intensive applications to such devices, without sacrificing accuracy or increasing hardware costs excessively. This book describes various memory substrates amenable to in- and near-memory computing, architectural approaches for designing efficient and reliable computing devices, and opportunities for in-/near-memory acceleration of different classes of applications.

Book Single Port Memory Design Using VHDL

Download or read book Single Port Memory Design Using VHDL written by Samridhi Bhasin and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's fast paced technology race there are many aspects of a computer that can be improved upon. Memory is an integral part of how a computer works and involves many different complex levels of hierarchy. Semiconductor memory is an electronic data storage device often used as computer memory, implemented on semiconductor-basis integrated circuits. It is made in many different types and technologies. A simple yet efficient method is presented to explore the design space for memory synthesis which deals with single-port memory synthesis according to the design constraints. The application of this method to different synthesis examples is illustrated and demonstrated. With suitable modifications, the technique could be applied to multiport memory synthesis in which the maximum number of read ports is different from the maximum number of write ports. Memory is designed in VHDL to produce the RTL schematic of the desired circuit. After that, the generated schematic can be verified using simulation software which shows the waveforms of inputs and outputs of the circuit after generating the appropriate testbench. All the chapters start with a brief explanation of design stage.

Book Separation Logic for High level Synthesis

Download or read book Separation Logic for High level Synthesis written by Felix Winterstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents novel compiler techniques, which combine a rigorous mathematical framework, novel program analyses and digital hardware design to advance current high-level synthesis tools and extend their scope beyond the industrial ‘state of the art’. Implementing computation on customised digital hardware plays an increasingly important role in the quest for energy-efficient high-performance computing. Field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) gain efficiency by encoding the computing task into the chip’s physical circuitry and are gaining rapidly increasing importance in the processor market, especially after recent announcements of large-scale deployments in the data centre. This is driving, more than ever, the demand for higher design entry abstraction levels, such as the automatic circuit synthesis from high-level languages (high-level synthesis). The techniques in this book apply formal reasoning to high-level synthesis in the context of demonstrably practical applications. /pp

Book Synthesizable VHDL Design for FPGAs

Download or read book Synthesizable VHDL Design for FPGAs written by Eduardo Augusto Bezerra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The methodology described in this book is the result of many years of research experience in the field of synthesizable VHDL design targeting FPGA based platforms. VHDL was first conceived as a documentation language for ASIC designs. Afterwards, the language was used for the behavioral simulation of ASICs, and also as a design input for synthesis tools. VHDL is a rich language, but just a small subset of it can be used to write synthesizable code, from which a physical circuit can be obtained. Usually VHDL books describe both, synthesis and simulation aspects of the language, but in this book the reader is conducted just through the features acceptable by synthesis tools. The book introduces the subjects in a gradual and concise way, providing just enough information for the reader to develop their synthesizable digital systems in VHDL. The examples in the book were planned targeting an FPGA platform widely used around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you an RTL or system designer that is currently using, moving, or planning to move to an HLS design environment? Finally, a comprehensive guide for designing hardware using C++ is here. Michael Fingeroff's High-Level Synthesis Blue Book presents the most effective C++ synthesis coding style for achieving high quality RTL. Master a totally new design methodology for coding increasingly complex designs! This book provides a step-by-step approach to using C++ as a hardware design language, including an introduction to the basics of HLS using concepts familiar to RTL designers. Each chapter provides easy-to-understand C++ examples, along with hardware and timing diagrams where appropriate. The book progresses from simple concepts such as sequential logic design to more complicated topics such as memory architecture and hierarchical sub-system design. Later chapters bring together many of the earlier HLS design concepts through their application in simplified design examples. These examples illustrate the fundamental principles behind C++ hardware design, which will translate to much larger designs. Although this book focuses primarily on C and C++ to present the basics of C++ synthesis, all of the concepts are equally applicable to SystemC when describing the core algorithmic part of a design. On completion of this book, readers should be well on their way to becoming experts in high-level synthesis.

Book Design of Energy Efficient Application Specific Instruction Set Processors

Download or read book Design of Energy Efficient Application Specific Instruction Set Processors written by Tilman Glökler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a brief introduction to low-power VLSI design, the design space of ASIP instruction set architectures (ISAs) is introduced with a special focus on important features for digital signal processing. Based on the degrees of freedom offered by this design space, a consistent ASIP design flow is proposed: this design flow starts with a given application and uses incremental optimization of the ASIP hardware, of ASIP coprocessors and of the ASIP software by using a top-down approach and by applying application-specific modifications on all levels of design hierarchy. A broad range of real-world signal processing applications serves as vehicle to illustrate each design decision and provides a hands-on approach to ASIP design. Finally, two complete case studies demonstrate the feasibility and the efficiency of the proposed methodology and quantitatively evaluate the benefits of ASIPs in an industrial context.

Book System Synthesis with VHDL

Download or read book System Synthesis with VHDL written by Petru Eles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embedded systems are usually composed of several interacting components such as custom or application specific processors, ASICs, memory blocks, and the associated communication infrastructure. The development of tools to support the design of such systems requires a further step from high-level synthesis towards a higher abstraction level. The lack of design tools accepting a system-level specification of a complete system, which may include both hardware and software components, is one of the major bottlenecks in the design of embedded systems. Thus, more and more research efforts have been spent on issues related to system-level synthesis. This book addresses the two most active research areas of design automation today: high-level synthesis and system-level synthesis. In particular, a transformational approach to synthesis from VHDL specifications is described. System Synthesis with VHDL provides a coherent view of system synthesis which includes the high-level and the system-level synthesis tasks. VHDL is used as a specification language and several issues concerning the use of VHDL for high-level and system-level synthesis are discussed. These include aspects from the compilation of VHDL into an internal design representation to the synthesis of systems specified as interacting VHDL processes. The book emphasizes the use of a transformational approach to system synthesis. A Petri net based design representation is rigorously defined and used throughout the book as a basic vehicle for illustration of transformations and other design concepts. Iterative improvement heuristics, such as tabu search, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms, are discussed and illustrated as strategies which are used to guide the optimization process in a transformation-based design environment. Advanced topics, including hardware/software partitioning, test synthesis and low power synthesis are discussed from the perspective of a transformational approach to system synthesis. System Synthesis with VHDL can be used for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in the area of design automation and, more specifically, of high-level and system-level synthesis. At the same time the book is intended for CAD developers and researchers as well as industrial designers of digital systems who are interested in new algorithms and techniques supporting modern design tools and methodologies.
