Book excerpt: Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a chemically and thermally stable n-type semiconducting material with many applications including solar cells, piezoelectrics, and fuel cell devices due to their flexible use in chemical sensing. ZnO has a wide band gap and fast electron transfer that makes it a promising candidate for a supporting matrix in the fabrication of biosensors. ZnO's high isoelectric point facilitates its binding with many enzymes proteins, DNA, and RNA providing potential use in biomedical applications. Here, we hydrothermally synthesized ZnO nanoparticles at low temperature conditions. Solvent, precursor, and reaction temperatures as well as reaction times were varied resulting in controlling the size, morphology and properties of the particles. These ZnO nanoparticles were characterized extensively by employing the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) among other techniques. These nanoparticles were coupled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) to fabricate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glucose sensors. ZnO is also demonstrated to potentially increase enzyme activity using luciferase as a model system.

Book excerpt: Union between top-down and bottom-up assembly is inevitable when scaling down physical, chemical, and biological sensors and probes. Current sensor/probe-based technologies are firmly founded on top-down manufacturing, with limitations in cost of production, manufacturing methods, and material constraints. As an alternative to such limitations, contemporary synthesis techniques for one-dimensional nanostructures have been combined with established methods of micro-fabrication for the development of novel tools and techniques for nanotechnology. More specifically, this dissertation is a systematic study of the synthesis and characterization of ZnO nanostructures for piezoelectric applications. Within this study the following goals have been achieved: (1) rational design and control of a diversity of novel ZnO nanostructures, (2) improved understanding of polar-surface-dominated (PSD) phenomena among Wurtzite crystal structures, (3) confirmation of Tasker's Rule via the synthesis, characterization, and modeling of polar-surface-dominated nanostructures, (4) measurement of the surface-charge density for real polar surfaces of ZnO, (5) confirmation of the electrostatic polar-charge model used to describe polar-surface-dominated phenomena, (6) dispersion of ZnO nanobelts onto the selective layers of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices for gas sensing applications, (7) manipulation of ZnO nanostructures using an atomic force microscope (AFM) for the development of piezoelectric devices, (8) fabrication of bulk acoustic resonator (BAR) and film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) devices based on the integrity of individual ZnO belts, (9) electrical characterization of a ZnO belt BAR device, (10) prediction and confirmation of the electrical response from a BAR device using a one-dimensional Krimholt-Leedom-Matthaei (KLM) model, and (11) development of a finite element model (FEM) to accurately predict the electrical response from ZnO belt BAR and FBAR devices in 3D.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ZINC OXIDE (ZnO) NANOSTRUCTURES Submitted by Leung Yu Hang For the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in January 2006 Since the discovery of carbon nanotubes by Iijima in 1991, increasing research effort has been devoted to the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials. Materials at this scale exhibit novel properties which cannot be found in their bulk form. In silicon nanowires, for example, the bandgap of Si nanowires increases from 1.1 eV to 3.7 eV when the nanowire diameter decreases from 7 nm to 1.3 nm. In recent years, nanostructures of various semiconductors like Si, gallium arsenide, gallium nitride, and zinc oxide have been demonstrated. Among them, ZnO has been recognized as a promising material for a variety of applications in the field of photonics, optoelectronics, gas sensing, field emission, and piezoelectrics. To realize the incorporation of ZnO nanostructures into real life applications, lots of work need to be done, including synthesis of the nanostructures, and understanding of their properties. In this study, a number of ZnO nanostructures (tetrapods, nanorods, nanoribbons/combs, multipods) were fabricated by thermal evaporation and hydrothermal synthesis methods. The morphologies and, structural and optical properties of the resultant nanostructures were then characterized by various techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, photoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance. It was observed that fabrication conditions could significantly affect the properties of the nanostructures. All nanostructures exhibited one UV peak and one broad peak in the visible spectrum. The major difference is that the nanostructures fabricated by thermal evaporation exhibited green PL emission while the nanorods synthesized by hydrothermal method gave yellow emission. Green emission was observed even without the presence of the EPR signal at g 1.96 in some samples. This result contradicts the commonly cited oxygen vacancy hypothesis of green emission of ZnO. Obviously, that hypothesis does not apply to all ZnO samples. The nanorod sample with yellow emission also exhibited strong EPR signal similar to the green emitting sample. A possible explanation for the obtained results is that there are two different deep levels responsible for the green and yellow emission respectively. Stimulated UV emission of three different nanostructures (tetrapods, nanoribbons/combs, and nanorods) was studied by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL). It was observed that different nanostructures exhibited different lasing thresholds, emission delay times and decay times. The difference in the lasing behaviors of the nanostructures is likely due to the difference in morphology, mode of cavity, or even native defects present in the material. Book excerpt: Zinc Oxide nanostructures are important for many applications, specifically for developing novel catalysts and sensors which our research group has been working on. The objectives of this thesis are: (1) synthesis and characterization of complex ZnO nanostructures; (2) development of synthesis protocols for high-yield and reliable synthesis of nanostructures. In this thesis, chapter 1 introduces the background of nanoscience and nanotechnology, with a focus on nanomaterials. In chapter 2, the fundamental knowledge of ZnO and relevant characterization techniques are introduced, specifically the crystallography of ZnO wurtzite structure and the scanning (transmission) electron microscopy. Several goals have been achieved and they are reported in chapter 3 and 4. First, the nano-pyramid decorated microwires were fabricated. A growth mechanism for those complex nanostructures was proposed. Second, surface modification such as grooved surfaces of ZnO nanostructures has been realized. Grooved nanowires, microbelts, and micrometer-scale tetra-pods are discussed. Third, the effects of oxygen partial pressure on the growth of ZnO have been investigated. All the ZnO nanostructures reported in this thesis were synthesized by a physical vapor deposition method. The field-emission scanning electron microscope was used to examine the morphologies of the synthesized nanostructures. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy provided information on the fabricated nanostructures.

Book excerpt: ZnO nanoparticles being biocompatible and chemically stable have much potential for biomedical applications that include anti-bacterial and mold prevention, air ventilation and purification, water purification, photosynthesis, and disease detection. Therefore, the fabrication of ZnO nanoparticles and their binding to biomolecules would be a notable contribution to this field. This research is aimed at the fabrication of ZnO nanoparticles using a safe, cost effective and easy to handle technique that is capable of producing nanoparticles free of any contamination, and functionalization of those particles with biomolecules. ZnO nanoparticles have been fabricated at room temperature by laser ablation of ZnO thin film prepared with a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Characterization of the nanoparticles has been done using UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission peaks at ~ 280 and ~ 410 nm respectively validate the exact nature of ZnO nanoparticles. Size determination of these particles by DLS and TEM have demonstrated that majority of the particles are in the range of 80 to 90 nm, which authenticates the presence of nanoparticles. Effects of the laser parameters on the growth of the nanoparticles have been investigated. Enhanced homogeneity and stability of these ZnO nanoparticles have been observed when produced in presence of 0.2 % glucose solution. Functionalization of these nanoparticles has been successfully established by assemblage with protein molecules. These results could play a significant role in future development of antibiotic free approach for treating microbial infection where antimicrobial enzymes attached to nanoparticles could be used.
