Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION, AND PHOTOPHYSICAL STUDIES OF ORGANIC- LANTHANIDE COMPLEXES Submitted by Ka-Leung Wong For Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in August 2006 The general background and coordination chemistry of lanthanides, their characteristic luminescent properties and nonlinear luminescent properties with the applications to material science and biological systems are reviewed. The design and synthesis of lanthanide-organic complexes based on similar tripodal amide ligands N-[2-(bis{2-[(ortho- substituent -benzoyl)amino]ethyl}amino)- ethyl]benzamide (ortho substituent-C H N O ) and bidentate amide ligands di-2- 27 27 4 3 methoxy-(2-aminoethyl)benzamide (C H N O ) were described. These ligands were 20 33 3 8 found to have different coordination to the lanthanide that caused a change in the photo-physical properties. The occurrences of high order multi-photon processes are rare, especially with lanthanide complexes. Generally there is a lack of clear molecular structure in systems that have been reported in the literature, hindering our understanding of the correlation of photo-structural properties. Our complexes have been found to display two different forms of coordination, which significantly affects their photo-properties. X-Ray structure analysis showed that, one being a linear polymeric form and the other a dendritic form, the latter has been found to exhibit an additive harmonic generation process as well as the multi-photon process which is present in both types of coordination. The design and synthesis of a metal-organic network were described based on a lanthanide complex that contains mucic acid, {[Ln(Mucicate) (H O) ].5H O} (Ln 1.5 2 2 2 n = Eu and Tb), exhibiting a novel 1-D hydrophilic channel in the porous framework. The 3D framework with a hydrophilic inner surface was found to exhibit a reversible - - - - anion uptake. Upon addition of an aqueous solution of sodium salts of I, Br, Cl, CN, 2- CO, to a solid sample of the Ln complex, the luminescent intensity enhancements were observed. The anion response of the channels is believed to be due to the effect of numerous OH groups in the mucic acid, which interacts strongly with the anion through hydrogen bonding. Experimental details including instruments used for physical characterization and the photo-physical measurement for linear, multi-photon absorption induced f-f emission and nonlinear emission were presented. Book Systematics and the Properties of the Lanthanides

Download or read book Systematics and the Properties of the Lanthanides written by Shyama P. Sinha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is not a mere collection of facts. It is the correlation of facts, the interpretative synthesis of the available knowledge and its application that excite the imagination of a scientist. Even in these days of modern technology, the need for quick and accurate dissemination of new information and current concepts still exists. Conferences and Symposia offer one direct method of communication. The Summer Schools are another approach. The success of a Summer School is mainly due to that human factor and under standing that goes with it and allows for extensive and often time-unrestricted discussions. During the course of the past 20 years, one of the most in tensively studied groups of elements in the Periodic Table is the Lanthanides. In this period, we have increased our knowledge on these once exotic elements, which were once considered to be a part of a lean and hungry industry, many-fold due to the involve ment of scientists from various disciplines. The purpose of our Summer School was to bring a group of ex perts and participants together for the exchange of ideas and in formation in an informal setting and to promote interdisciplinary interactions. Out of many conceivable topics, we selected the following five as the main basis to broaden our knowledge and understanding I) Systematics 2) Structure 3) Electronic and Magnetic Proper ties 4) Spectroscopic Properties and 5) Lanthanide Geochemistry.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Photophysical Studies of Triazine based Lanthanide III diketonate Complexes

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Photophysical Studies of Triazine based Lanthanide III diketonate Complexes written by Wai Sum Lo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Sm(III) is dual-emissive - emitting in both the visible and NIR regions, the NIR photophysical properties were investigated. Originating from the same emitting state as the visible luminescence transitions, the NIR transitions were studied and compared. In addition to solvatochromic studies, this chapter discusses the validity of the energy gap law in estimating the extent of quenching by high energy oscillators and thus provide a blueprint for maximizing the intrinsically weak NIR luminescence by manipulating the coordination environment. NIR luminescence from the ytterbium(III) complex was also presented, as the energy transfer mechanism of Yb(III) has always been sort of an enigma due to the large energy difference between the Yb(III) only excited state and the donating state of common antennae. Chapter five focuses on the syntheses of a multidentate water-soluble pocket for lanthanide(III) complexes. The ligand system extends the aforementioned studies by using a single multi-chelate in place of multiple tri-/bi-dentate ligands as an effort to increase the stability of the complexes in solution state and thus creates a platform for exploring the non-triplet ILCT energy transfer pathway for lanthanide(III) luminescence sensitization in water to expand the scope of potential applications.

Book Energy Transfer Processes in Polynuclear Lanthanide Complexes

Download or read book Energy Transfer Processes in Polynuclear Lanthanide Complexes written by Shun Omagari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the luminescence mechanism of polynuclear lanthanide complexes, focusing on energy transfer processes using a combination of experimental and theoretical approaches. Lanthanide complexes show intense luminescence from the lanthanide ion through sensitization by the organic ligands. The high chromaticity of the emission and the long lifetimes of the complexes are particularly attractive for applications such as organic light-emitting diodes and bioprobes. Polynuclear lanthanide complexes (coordination polymers and clusters) have attracted considerable interest for functionalization by energy transfer between lanthanide ions. At the same time, such extra processes complicate the luminescence mechanism, hindering the rational design of functional polynuclear lanthanide complexes. Firstly, the book explains the principle of the theoretical methods, and then describes the concentration-quenching mechanism in coordination polymers. It also examines the effect of intrinsic spin–orbit coupling arising from lanthanide ions on the ligand-to-lanthanide energy transfer efficiency and the mechanism of back energy transfer (the opposite of sensitizing energy transfer) in lanthanide clusters. This sets the stage for the final topic: the suppression of back energy transfer by energy transfer between lanthanide ions in lanthanide clusters, which is of critical importance, showing that the lanthanide clusters can be considered a new generation of functional and efficient luminescent material and could also provide a breakthrough in lanthanide photophysics.

This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modulating the spectroscopic overlap between the emission bands of donors and the absorption spectra of acceptors by various simulations, it is possible to systematically investigate the emission behaviors of lanthanide complexes under different conditions. To establish the relationships between emission behaviors and various external simulations, it is necessary to study the energy transfer rate and efficiency between the donor and acceptor under different conditions to clarify the luminescent mechanism of the complexes, providing a theoretical basis for high-performance smart materials. This review focuses on the recent progress of luminescence performance of lanthanide complexes, including energy transfer mechanisms, emission color modulation, the strategies for optimizing lanthanide luminescence, and finally, various applications based on luminescence performance of lanthanide complexes and lanthanide metal-organic frameworks.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Photophysical Property Studies of a Series of Luminescent Organic and Organometallic Compounds

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Photophysical Property Studies of a Series of Luminescent Organic and Organometallic Compounds written by Min Deng and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluorescent compounds with special photophysical properties, such as near-infrared (NIR) luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), can be applied as bioimaging probes, security inks and chemical sensors. However, due to the inefficient quantum yield or brightness, applications of the developed NIR or CPL emitters in real life have rarely been discussed. In order to overcome these issues, this dissertation describes four chapters regarding the synthesis, characterization and photophysical property studies of a series of new organic and organometallic compounds. In chapter I, a novel mechanism for lanthanide sensitization will be discussed using a pyrene excimer generating ligand. In chapter II, lanthanide-based organometallic complexes with high circularly polarized luminescence brightness enabled by a chiral H8-Binol ligand will be mentioned. In chapter III, circularly polarized luminescence of the first molecular copper-based organometallic complexes incorporating a chiral carbene ligand will be shown. In chapter IV, the synthesis and photophysical property studies of a series of rhodamine derivatives will be included.

Book Single Molecule Magnet and Luminescence Properties of Lanthanide and Transition Metal Complexes Using Tetrazine and Naphthalimide Based Ligands

Download or read book Single Molecule Magnet and Luminescence Properties of Lanthanide and Transition Metal Complexes Using Tetrazine and Naphthalimide Based Ligands written by Kimia Jahandar Kojouri and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examined two distinct characteristics of lanthanide and transition metal complexes: Magnetism and Luminescence. In chapter two, synthesis, characterization, magnetic and luminescence investigations of mononuclear lanthanide complexes using Schiff-base tetrazine based ligand were performed. Six novel lanthanide complexes, [LaIIICl3(Htzpy)2], [TbIIICl2(Htzpy)2(MeOH)]Cl, [HoIIICl2(Htzpy)2(MeOH)]Cl, [DyIIICl2(Htzpy)2(MeOH)]Cl, [ErIIICl2(Htzpy)2(MeOH)]Cl and [YbIIICl2(Htzpy)2]Cl have been synthesized successfully and the studies were performed with the application of single crystal X-ray diffractometry, SQUID magnetometry, UV-Vis-NIR spectrometry and custom-built hyperspectral microscope (for luminescence spectroscopy). Chapter three is mainly about the luminescence properties of CoII and CuII complexes using a naphthalimide based ligand. Two complexes, [CoIICl2(Pynap)2] and [CuIIBr2(Pynap)2] were synthesized successfully and characterized using single crystal X-ray diffractometry, UV-Vis spectrometry and hyperspectral microscope (for luminescence spectroscopy). In order to have information about the electrochemical properties of CoII and CuII complexes, their redox activity was monitored by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and compared with the parent ligand. In addition, a rational design to synthesize a new ligand (dipicnap) which consists of both naphthalimide and dipicolinic acid moieties is presented.

Book excerpt: Reported in Chapter 2 of this thesis is the reliable and tolerant synthesis of a small library of pyrazole and triazole heterocycles. This synthesis was achieved in two steps in good yields from the reaction of acetophenone and benzamide derivatives with dimethyl formamide-dimethyl acetal followed by a cyclization with hydrazine. Also reported is the synthesis and characterization of their corresponding scorpionate ligands. Preliminary coordination chemistry was done with a variety of lanthanide metals and was studied by standard spectroscopic methods as well as variable temperature 1H NMR, which revealed that Curie-Weiss behaviour was followed for these complexes in solution. An X-ray crystal structure of a nine co-ordinate ytterbium metal centre with eight nitrogen atom (four pyrazole, four pyridine) donors and one chloride atom was obtained, which may have been a product of decomposition during crystal growth. The bond lengths of this structure were compared with other lanthanide complexes of similar structural motifs. This comparison supported the theory of decomposition as the pyridine nitrogen atom-ytterbium bond lengths were longer than the average ytterbium-nitrogen atom bond length.
