Book Synthesis and Characterization of Imidazole containing Conjugated Polymers

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Imidazole containing Conjugated Polymers written by Jared D. Harris and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconducting conjugated polymers hold tremendous promise as active layers for transformative electronic devices. This materials class benefits from the structural variety provided by organic chemistry such that highly tunable band structures are attainable for as-synthesized polymers. This dissertation describes the synthesis and characterization of novel imidazole-containing conjugated polymers for the purposes of (de)protonating the as-synthesized materials gaining conjugated poly(ionomer)s. (De)protonation easily enables band structure modification through manipulation of the materials' ionization potential and electron affinity. Controlled exposure to acids and bases led to reversible (de)protonation observable via UV-visible and photoluminescence spectroscopies. (De)protonation's effects on polymeric band structures was empirically and computationally examined. Additionally, we scrutinize different approaches for gaining end-functionalized conjugated polymers from AA/BB-type polycondensations and delineate requirements to obtain well-defined chain-ends.

Book Doping in Conjugated Polymers

Download or read book Doping in Conjugated Polymers written by Pradip Kar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An A-to-Z of doping including its definition, its importance, methods of measurement, advantages and disadvantages, properties and characteristics—and role in conjugated polymers The versatility of polymer materials is expanding because of the introduction of electro-active behavior into the characteristics of some of them. The most exciting development in this area is related to the discovery of intrinsically conductive polymers or conjugated polymers, which include such examples as polyacetylene, polyaniline, polypyrrole, and polythiophene as well as their derivatives. "Synmet" or "synthetic metal" conjugated polymers, with their metallic characteristics, including conductivity, are of special interest to researchers. An area of limitless potential and application, conjugated polymers have sparked enormous interest, beginning in 2000 when the Nobel Prize for the discovery and development of electrically conducting conjugated polymers was awarded to three scientists: Alan J. Heeger, Alan G. MacDiarmid, and Hideki Shirakawa. Conjugated polymers have a combination of properties—both metallic (conductivity) and polymeric; doping gives the conjugated polymer's semiconducting a wide range of conductivity, from insulating to low conducting. The doping process is a tested effective method for producing conducting polymers as semiconducting material, providing a substitute for inorganic semiconductors. Doping in Conjugated Polymers is the first book dedicated to the subject and offers a comprehensive A-to-Z overview. It details doping interaction, dopant types, doping techniques, and the influence of the dopant on applications. It explains how the performance of doped conjugated polymers is greatly influenced by the nature of the dopants and their level of distribution within the polymer, and shows how the electrochemical, mechanical, and optical properties of the doped conjugated polymers can be tailored by controlling the size and mobility of the dopants counter ions. The book also examines doping at the nanoscale, in particular, with carbon nanotubes. Readership The book will interest a broad range of researchers including chemists, electrochemists, biochemists, experimental and theoretical physicists, electronic and electrical engineers, polymer and materials scientists. It can also be used in both graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses on conjugated polymers and polymer technology.

Book Optically Active Polymers

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Sélégny
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400993781
  • Pages : 421 pages

Download or read book Optically Active Polymers written by E. Sélégny and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first four volumes of the series on 'Charged and Reactive Polymers' have been devoted to polymers in solution (Voh. I and II) or in gel and membrane forms (Vols. III and IV). In correlation with charges, other physical or chemical properties of macro molecules have been considered. Understanding of charge and hydrophobic effects is equally important for synthetic and biopolymers or their systems. Optically Active Polymers are related to problems of the same class, since optical activity is an inherent property of both natural macromolecules as well as a great variety of polymers synthesized in the Jast twenty years. Optical activity is a physical spectral property of chiral matter caused by asymmetrical configurations, conformations and structures which have no plane and no center of symmetry and consequently have two mirror image enantiomeric forms of inverse optical rotation. The racemic mixture of chiral enantiomers is optically inactive. The most common form of optical activity was first measured at a constant wavelength by the angle of rotation of linearly polarized light. More recently the measurements have been extended to the entire range of visible and attainable ultraviolet regions where electronic transitions are observed, giving rise to the ORD technique (Optical Rotatory Dispersion). The Cotton effects appear in the region of optically active absorption bands; outside of these bands the plain curve spectrum is also dependent on all the electronic transitions of the chromophores.
