Book Synthesis Crystallization and Characterization of Gold I Complexes with Studies on Luminescence Polymorphism and Response to Environmental Stimuli

Download or read book Synthesis Crystallization and Characterization of Gold I Complexes with Studies on Luminescence Polymorphism and Response to Environmental Stimuli written by Phuong (Lucy) Minh Cam Luong and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this dissertation focuses on the synthesis, crystallization, and characterization of various gold(I) complexes. With every gold(I) crystal, intensive studies were conducted to uncover any luminescence, polymorphism, and/or response to environmental stimuli such as temperature, vapor, and pressure. All doctoral research performed in the Balch lab, including collaborations with other members as well as outside research groups, is not fully presented in this dissertation. A list of publications can be found at the end. Chapter 1 explores the role of anions and mixture of anions in crystals of bis(cyclohexylioscyanide) gold(I) cations, [(C6H11NC)2Au]+. A new crystal was synthesized and characterized with the (SbF6)− noncoordinating anion. The crystal displayed no known polymorphism unlike its previously synthesized (PF6)− and (AsF6)− analogues. However, by mixing combinations of anions and ratios of anions, an isostructural set of crystals were produced. Not only were thermochromic trends observed for mixed anion crystals with known thermochromic species but unexpected thermochromic properties appeared in mixed anion crystals that contained species with no thermochromism. In Chapter 2, the vapochromic and vapoluminescent properties of both [(C6H11NC)2Au](PF6) and [(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6) were further investigated to uncover the first observed single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transition, verified by single crystal X-ray diffraction, of both species. A rare case of a two-polymorph single crystal of each species was achieved as well. With no vapor molecules incorporated in these crystals, the mechanism of conversion was further examined at the macroscopic, microscopic, and atomic level to understand how these solvent-free crystals transform from solvent vapor exposure. Chapter 3 focuses on methods to isolate [(C6H11NC)2Au]+ to form non-luminescent crystals, which was achieved through bulky noncoordinating anions and solvent molecules. Newly synthesized [(C6H11NC)2Au](BArF24) was crystallized but showed no further interesting properties other than purposely isolating aurophilic interactions. However, the first solvates of these [(C6H11NC)2Au]+ series, C6H6·[(C6H11NC)2Au](AsF6) and C6H6·[(C6H11NC)2Au](SbF6), were crystallized that displayed a unique turning on of luminescence when left to dry that matched their solvent-free forms, as verified by powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Differing from the other studies, Chapter 4 examines the structure and luminescence of three-coordinate 2,2'-bipyridine gold(I) tertiary phosphine crystals. Separate isomorphic series of [(Ph3P)Au(bipy)]XF6 and [(Et3P)Au(bipy)]XF6 (where X = P, As, or Sb) along with binuclear [[mu]2-bipy(AuPPh3)2](PF6)2 were crystallized and showed no luminescence, which is unlike that of known strongly luminescent gold(I) phosphines. However, the three-coordinate [(Ph3P)Au(bipy)]XF6 and [(Et3P)Au(bipy)]XF6 complexes all displayed significantly unsymmetrical coordination of the gold(I) to the two nitrogen atoms in the 2,2'-bipyridine ligand. These large unsymmetrical distances were further investigated.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Luminescent Gold III Complexes

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Luminescent Gold III Complexes written by Amanda N. Sulicz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemistry of cyclometalated gold(III) has been relatively slow to emerge, but recent advances in catalyst and material design have driven a renewed interest. Reported here are synthetic, structural, and optical studies of cyclometalated gold(III) aryl complexes. These new complexes show ligand-centered luminescence that is perturbed by the heavy-atom effect of gold. Traditionally, metal-carbon bond formation relied on organometallic complexes of electropositive elements, including lithium and magnesium. The easily reducible nature of gold(III) often interferes with these conventional reagents, thus resulting in the use of toxic metals like mercury or thallium. Reported here is the use of palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling for the attachment of aryl ligands to cyclometalated gold(III) chloride complexes. The resulting di- and mono-arylated species were luminescent. Several complexes have been crystallographically characterized. Luminescent derivatives of a previously published gold(III) chloro precursor, initially reported for catalytic purposes, were prepared through boron transmetalation reactions. Complexes bearing both aryl and cyanide ligands were synthesized. These luminescent materials are diamagnetic and were be characterized by multinuclear NMR, absorption and emission spectroscopies (including time-resolved emission), and by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The synthesized gold(I) complexes were designed to display reverse saturable absorption and be a two photon acceptor. The BTF (BTF = 2-(9,9’-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-benzothiazole) ligand was chosen as it has been previously demonstrated to have favorable photophysical effects on platinum(II) and ruthenium(II) complexes for applications in photodynamic therapy and optical power limiting (OPL). Gold(I) complexes with the BTF ligand are sought for potential OPL applications. Synthesized complexes are luminescent and were characterized by multinuclear NMR, absorption and emission spectroscopies, photoluminescent quantum yields, time-resolved emission. Two complexes were crystallographically characterized.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN, SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND LUMINESCENCE PROPERTIES OF ALKYNYLGOLD(I) COMPLEXES STRATEGIES TOWARDS SUPRAMOLECULAR ARCHITECTURES AND HOST GUEST CHEMISTRY Submitted by YIP Sung Kong for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2005 A series of luminescent dialkynylaurate(I) complexes, [X][Au(C CR) ] [X = Bu N, R = C H OMe-p, C H OHex-p, C H Oct-p, C H Cl-p, C H CF -p, 1-naphthyl 4 6 4 6 4 6 4 6 4 6 4 3 (Np), 9-anthracenyl (An), 1-pyrenyl (Pyr); X = PPN, R = Pyr] have been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of [BuN][Au(CCCHOMe-p)] and 4 64 2 [BuN][Au(CCCHCF-p)] showed the presence of intermolecular hydrogen 4 64 3 2 bonds with bonding distances of ca. 2.599 - 2.620 A. The related pentanuclear gold(I)-copper(I) and -silver(I) mixed-metal alkynyl complexes, [BuN][AuM(CCCH-R-p) ] [M = Cu, R = OMe, OBu, OHex, Et; M = Ag, R = Et, 4 32 64 6 OHex] have been synthesized. The emission origin was tentatively assigned as derived from triplet states of metalloligand-to-metal cluster core charge transfer [Au(C CR) M Au ] (M = Cu, Ag) origin, probably mixed with some metal- 2 2 3 perturbed intraligand *(C C) character. Through the utilization of alkynylcalix[4]crown as ligands, dinuclear gold(I) 1 2 3 alkynylcalix[4]crown-5 complexes, [(R P)Au] L [R = Tol-o, L = L; R = Ph, L = L, L ], 3 2 4 5 6 1 tetranuclear gold(I) alkynylcalix[4]crown assemblies, [Au (L') ] [L' = L, L, L, L ] and 4 2 a mixed-metal gold(I)-copper(I) alkynylcalix[4]crown complex, [Au Cu (L ) ] have 2 2 2 been synthesized. The X-ray crystal structures of all the dinuclear gold(I) complexes, 4 1 4 [Au (L') ] [L' = L, L ] and [Au Cu (L ) ] have been determined. The X-ray crystal 4 2 2 2 2 structures of [Au(L')] showed that two of the gold(I) centers were each 4 2 -coordinated to two alkynyl units, while the other two were each -coordinated by 2 2 the two alkynyl units in an unusual planar, -coordination mode, which was the first of its kind for gold(I) complexes. The Au Au distances between adjacent gold atoms were in the range of 3.1164(11) 3.2118(10) A, indicative of the presence of significant Au Au interactions. The emissive origin of [Au (L') ] was assigned as 4 2 derived from a triplet state of a metal cluster-centered ds/dp character, probably with some mixing of a metal-perturbed intraligand character, while the emission of [Au Cu (L ) ] was assigned to have similar character, but with modification by 2 2 2 Au Cu interactions. The binding properties of the dinuclear gold(I) complexes toward alkali metal ions have been studied. Dinuclear gold(I) complexes, [{Ph PN(R)PPh }Au (C CR') ] [R = Pr, R' = Ph, 2 2 2 2 C H OMe-p, C H Me-p, C H Cl-p; R = C H OMe-p, R' = Ph], have been synthesized 6 4 6 4 6 4 6 4 by deploymerization of alkynylgold polymers using bis(diphenylphosphino)amines as ligands. The X-ray crystal structures of [{PhPN(Pr)PPh}Au(C CPh)] and 2 2 2 2 [{PhPN(Pr)PPh}Au(C CCHOMe-p)]] revealed the presence of short 2 2 2 6 4 2 intramolecular Au Au contacts with the Au Au distances of 2.8404(8) and 3.0708(7) A, respectively. The photophysical properties of the complexes have been studied and their emission orig

Book Optoelectronic Properties of Inorganic Compounds

Download or read book Optoelectronic Properties of Inorganic Compounds written by D. Max Roundhill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to offer the reader a snapshot of the field of optoelectronic materials from the viewpoint of inorganic chemists. The field of inorganic chemistry is transforming from one focused on the synthesis of compounds having interesting coordination numbers, structures, and stereochemistries, to one focused on preparing compounds that have potentially useful practical applica tions. Two such applications are in the area of optics and electronics. These are fields where the use of inorganic materials has a long history. As the field of microelectronics develops the demands on the performance of such materials increases, and it becomes necessary to discover compounds that will meet these demands. The field of optoelectronics represents a merging of the two disciplines. Its emergence is a natural one because many of the applications involve both of these properties, and also because the electronic structure of a metal compound that confers novel optical properties is often one that also influences its electron transfer and conductivity characteristics. Two of the more important growth areas that have led to these developments are communications and medicine. Within the communications field there is the microelectronics that is involved in information storage and transmittal, some of which will be transferred into the optical regime. Within the medical field there are chemical probes that transmit analytical information from an in vivo environment. This information needs to be readily accessible from an external site, and then quickly converted into images or data that yield accurate and inexpensive diagnoses.

Book New Chemistry with Gold nitrogen Complexes

Download or read book New Chemistry with Gold nitrogen Complexes written by Hanan Elsayed Abdou and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen ligands have been little studied with gold(I) and almost no chemistry has been described using anionic bridging nitrogen ligands. This dissertation concerns the impact of the bridging ligands amidinate, ArNHC(H)NAr, on the chemistry of gold(I) and, in particular, the effect of substituents on the molecular arrangement. The electronic vs. steric effect of the substituents on the molecular arrangement of gold(I) amidinates complexes is studied in detail. Tetra-, tri-, and dinuclear gold(I) amidinate complexes are synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction. Spectroscopic and electrochemical studies of the amidinate complexes are described. Catalytic studies suggest that gold amidinates and related gold nitrogen complexes are the best catalyst precursors for CO oxidation on TiO2 surface reported to date (87% conversion). The dinuclear gold(I) amidinate complex with a Au ... Au distance of 2.711(3) [angstrom] is rare. To our knowledge, there is only one other example of a symmetrical dinuclear gold(I) nitrogen complex. Oxidative-addition reactions to the dinuclear gold(I) complex, [Au2(2,6-Me2-form)2] are studied in detail and result in the formation of gold(II) complexes. The gold(II) amidinate complexes are the first formed with nitrogen ligands. The complexes are stable at room temperature. Mixed ligand tetranuclear gold(I) clusters and tetranuclear mixed Au-Ag metal clusters of pyrazolate and amidinate ligands are synthesized and characterized using Xray diffraction.

Book Computational and Experimental Studies of the Photoluminescence Reactivity and Structural Properties of D10 and D8 Metal Complexes

Download or read book Computational and Experimental Studies of the Photoluminescence Reactivity and Structural Properties of D10 and D8 Metal Complexes written by Brooke Michelle Otten and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational chemistry has gained interest as a characterization tool to predict photoluminescence, reactivity and structural properties of organic and transition metal complexes. With the rise of methods including relativity, these studies have been expanded to the accurate modeling of luminescence spectra of complexes with considerable spin-orbit splitting due to heavy metal centers as well as the reaction pathways for these complexes to produce natural products such as hydrogen gas. These advances have led to the synthesis and utility of more effective catalysis as well as the development of more effective organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) through the incorporation of organometallic complexes as emitters instead of typical organic emitters. In terms of significant scientific advancement presented in this work is in relation to the discovery of significant spin-orbit splitting in a gold(I) alkylphosphine complex, where the splitting results in the states that emit in different colors of the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This work also reveals the discovery both computationally and experimentally, of a genuine polar-covalent bond between two-closed shell metals. This work highlights a complex with an incredibly short gold(I) - copper(I) intermetallic distance leading to a vibrational frequency and dissociation energy that is on par with those of other systems with single-bonded metal centers. Lastly, this work outlines a strategy for the production of hydrogen gas through the use of trinuclear cyclic coinage metal complexes as catalysis to split hydrohalic acids.
