Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reaction of pyruvic acid phenylhydrazone [HPAPD, (1)] with organotin(IV) chloride(s) yielded the organotin(IV) complexes (2-11). Molecular structural assessments of the complexes (2-11) have been based on data from UV-Vis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectral studies. The molecular structure of HPAPD (1) has also been determined by X-ray diffraction. Spectroscopic data suggested that HPAPD (1) is coordinated to the tin(IV) atom via carboxylate-O and azomethine-N atoms and acted as a mononegative bidentate chelating agent in all the organotin(IV) complexes (2-11). Spectral data indicated that thiocyanate group is N-coordinated to the Sn(IV) ion in the complexes (7-9). The coordination number of tin in all the organotin(IV) complexes (2-11) is five. The cytotoxicity of the compounds 1-11 was studied against Artemia salina. The free ligand (1) and its organotin(IV) complexes (2-11) were assayed for in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Enterobacter aerogenese, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi. The biological studies showed that all organotin(IV) complexes (2-11) are more potent antibacterial and cytotoxic agents than their free ligand (1).

Book excerpt: The book includes the synthesis, characterization and X-ray analysis of organotin(IV) carboxylates and organotin(IV) thiocarboxylates. Various di- and triorganotin(IV) compounds have been synthesized with a stoichiometric amount of synthesized carboxylic acid and thiocarboxylic acid. The structural assignments were made on the basis of spectral techniques such as FT-IR, 1H, 13C, 119Sn NMR and mass spectrometry, which ascertain the tetrahedral environment around the tin atom in solution while penta or hexa coordination is found in the solid state. Biological activity tests of the synthesized carboxylates and thiocarboxylates were made against various medically important bacteria and fungi. Most of the compounds were found to show activity with a few exceptions. These compounds were also evaluated for their cytotoxicity using the brine-shrimp lethality bioassay method. Only few of the compounds were found to be nontoxic

Book excerpt: Di- and tri-organotin(IV) carboxylates of the type R2SnL2 [R = CH3, n-C4H9, n-C8H17] and R3SnL [R = CH3, n-C4H9, C6H5, where L= oxygen donor ligand, have been synthesized and characterized by various analytical techniques such as elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR (1H, 13C) and single crystal X-ray analysis. The synthesized complexes were screened for their catalytic activity in synthesis of biodiesel-an alternative fuel, and biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxicity. The triorganotin(IV) complexes exhibited comparatively higher catalytic and biological activities than their diorganotin(IV) analogues. DNA interactions studies of the ligands and synthesized complexes were also investigated and the results showed that both ligands and complexes interact with DNA via intercalation as well as minor groove binding.

Book excerpt: 2-Thiophenecarboxylic acid hydrazide has been treated with benzaldehyde in 1:1 molar ratio at room temperature in the presence of a suitable solvent to yield Schiff base. Then it has been treated with R2SnCl2/R3SnCl in 1:1 molar ratio to synthesize organotin(IV) complexes under reflux conditions. Organotin(IV) complexes have been characterized by FT-IR and semi-empirical study. FT-IR data explains the tetrahedral arrangement of sulphur donor ligand with tin metal which is further confirmed by semi-empirical study. Least value of dipole moment of complex 3 explain the trans orientation of chlorine atom around tin metal. The complexes along with ligand have also been screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Organotin(IV) complexes exhibited antibectrial activities with few exceptions as compared to free ligand. Complex 4 has been found potent antibacterial agent among all complexes.

It is notable that although a number of researches have been conducted on the coordination compounds of organotin(IV) with various organic ligands, there are few reports about synthesis and characterization of organotin(IV) complexes containing phosphoramide ligands. Thus, this area of organometallic chemistry has a great potential to grow by inorganic chemists and since phosphoramides compounds have also shown promising medicinal and clinical applications like anticancer, anti-HCV, anti-HIV properties, their organotin(IV) complexes may indicate enhanced medicinal applications. Therefore, this work reviews the synthesis, X-ray crystal structures, DFT calculations, antibacterial activities and nanoparticles of organotin(IV) complexes including phosphoramides ligands.
