Book Molybdenum Disulfide

Download or read book Molybdenum Disulfide written by Jeremiah McBride and published by Novinka Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a semiconductor which is composed of Mo atoms sandwiched between two layers of hexagonal close packed sulfur atoms in a structure similar to graphene. Traditionally, it has been used as a solid lubricant due to its low friction properties and as a hydrodesulfurisation catalyst to lower the sulfur content in natural gas and fuels. Bulk MoS2 were first examined as a possible hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalyst as early as 1977 by Tributsch et al. However, it was not until about 20 years later that its potential in the hydrogen evolution reaction was fully unveiled. This book discusses the synthesis, properties and industrial applications of molybdenum disulfide.

Book Molybdenum Sulfide Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition

Download or read book Molybdenum Sulfide Prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition written by Steven Payonk Letourneau and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is the prototypical two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor. Like graphite, it has a layered structure containing weak van der Waals bonding between layers, while exhibiting strong covalent bonding within layers. The weak secondary bonding allows for isolation of these 2D materials to single layers, like graphene. While bulk MoS2 is an indirect band gap semiconductor with a band gap of ~1.3 eV, monolayer MoS2 exhibits a direct band gap of ~1.8 eV, which is an attractive property for many opto-electronic applications. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been used to grow amorphous films of MoS2 using molybdenum chlorides and carbonates, however many of these molybdenum chemistries require high temperature vapor transport as they are solids at room temperature. We demonstrate the first ALD of MoS2 at 200°C using molybdenum hexafluoride (MoF6), a liquid at room temperature, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). in situ quartz crystal microbalance measurements were used to demonstrate self-limiting chemistry for both precursors, which is the hallmark of ALD. The deposited films were amorphous, and after annealing in hydrogen, crystalline MoS2 was discernable. The nucleation and early stages of MoS2 ALD on metal oxide surfaces were investigated using in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The formation of Al-F and MoOF4 seem to initially form, but after H2S is introduced sulfate species begin to appear. This competition for oxygen seems to inhibit growth initially, until the oxygen at the surface is consumed and steady state growth occurs. To understand the structure of the amorphous films, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high-energy X-ray diffraction (HE-XRD) experiments were performed at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). Contrary to previous findings, the MoS2 structure was found to be sulfur rich; however, the atomic coordinations of Mo and S atoms bond distances matched standards. Interestingly, the Mo-Mo coordinations were much lower than reference structures, which could explain the lack of or very weak Raman vibrational modes seen in many as-deposited ALD MoS2 films. Experimental data were consistent with films containing clusters of a sulfur rich [Mo3S(S6)2]2 ̄phase, but after annealing in H2 and H2S, these clusters decompose forming a layered MoS2 structure. Understanding these complex surface interactions of nucleation, growth, and phase transformations is necessary to enable synthesis of high quality MoS2 for use in future microelectronics."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Book Characterization Exfoliation and Applications of Boron Nitride and Molybdenum Disulfide from Compressible Flow Exfoliation

Download or read book Characterization Exfoliation and Applications of Boron Nitride and Molybdenum Disulfide from Compressible Flow Exfoliation written by Maryam Avateffazeli and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2D (two-dimensional) nanomaterials have drawn the attention of numerous studies and scientists over the recent years which make them favorable for next generation utilizations in consumer goods, healthcare and energy applications. The significant quest for these materials is due to the remarkable features they have which necessitate improving the mass production methods. In this study we present a new Compressible Flow Exfoliation (CFE) technique utilizing a multiphase flow of 2D layered materials suspended in a high-pressure gas passing through an expansion nozzle for 2D nano materials mass production. The new method has many benefits over the current fabrication of 2D materials techniques like liquid shear exfoliation as well as chemical intercalation and exfoliation. These benefits include being fast, ecofriendly, having high yield values and less defects in the final products. Existing methods like liquid phase exfoliation methods need almost six hours or more for the exfoliation process while the new Compressible Flow Exfoliation method is in the order of only 2-3 seconds. The other main concepts this thesis has concentrated on are the analysis of the crystal structure of materials before and after this synthesis via performing various characterization tests.

Book Growth and Characterization of Molybdenum Disulfide Thin Films

Download or read book Growth and Characterization of Molybdenum Disulfide Thin Films written by Carl Morris Gross (III) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional materials, or materials that are only one atomic layer thick, have seen much research in recent years because of their interesting electrical properties. The first of these materials, graphene, was found to have incredible electrical properties but lacked a bandgap in intrinsic films. Without a bandgap, graphene cannot create transistors that can be shut off. Molybdenum disulfide, however, is a two-dimensional semiconductor with a large bandgap. The main issue of molybdenum disulfide is that synthesized films are a much lower quality than their exfoliated counterparts. For molybdenum disulfide to be able to be used practically, a method of synthesis must be found that can reliably create quality large area monolayer films. In this thesis, three methods of molybdenum disulfide film synthesis are presented. Methods implemented used a tube furnace as a chemical vapor deposition system to evaporate source materials to synthesize thin films of molybdenum disulfide. An exploration into the different synthesis parameters shows optimal conditions for these specific methods. Then a discussion of these different methods is presented by judging films grown by using these methods on relevant criteria. This work shows methods to synthesize large area, polycrystalline, small grain, multilayer films, both intrinsic and doped, and to synthesize small area, single crystal and polycrystalline, monolayer films of molybdenum disulfide.

Book Synthesis characterization and applications of nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis

Download or read book Synthesis characterization and applications of nanomaterials in the field of photocatalysis written by Shamaila Sajjad and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, East China University of Science and Technology (-), language: English, abstract: Considerable effort has been made to design, fabricate, and manipulate nanostructured materials by innovative approaches. The precise control of nanoscale structures will pave the way not only for elucidating unique size/shape dependent physicochemical properties but also for realizing new applications in science and technology. Nanotechnology offers unprecedented opportunities for improving our daily lives and the environment in which we live. This thesis mainly describes recent progress in the design, fabrication, and modification of nanostructured semiconductor materials for environmental applications. The scope of this thesis covers TiO2, Bi2O3 and BiOCl materials, focusing particularly on TiO2-based nanostructures (e.g., pure, doped, coupled, mesoporous, hierarchically porous, and ordered mesoporous TiO2). Mesoporous titania is of particular interest since this class of materials possesses well-defined porosity and large specific surface areas. For photocatalytic degradation of organics, these desirable properties are anticipated to improve the efficiency. So in the first part of work, I have synthesized the mesoporous titania by using poly ethylene glycol as a template in dilute acetic acid aqueous solution by hydrothermal process and investigated the effect of PEG molecular weights and thermal treatment on the resultant structure and photocatalytic activity. When the molecular weights of PEG vary from 600 to 20,000, the particle sizes of mesoporous-TiO2 structure decrease from 15.1 to 13.3 nm and mean pore sizes increase from 6.9-10.6 nm. The activities of these mesoporous-TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by using PEG are evaluated and compared with Degussa P-25 using chloro-phenol as a testing compound. [...]
